For
its farewell season after
35 years, the Nomos
Quartet from Hanover
created a concert series
in 2019 around the works
by Ludwig van Beethoven,
who had set standards in
the field of string
quartets. For this event,
the ensemble commissioned
a new work from Irister
Schiphorst, in which the
composer at first studied
Beethoven's first
contribution to the
genre. However, her
distance from the
reference piece became
greater than initially
planned, and the question
that moved centre-stage
was: 'How does
Beethoven's music
resonate in me at all? Is
it musical gestures,
themes or moods?' The
tonal result of this
composing
self-exploration is -
rich in contrast, often
noise-like and pushing
the dynamic range to its
limits - the personal
reformulation of
Beethovian 'pathos
formulas',i. e. signs of
passionate experience
embodied in the universal
cultural heritage.

Richard
Reed Parry 's Quartet For
Heart And Breath is an
innovative and original
piece based on the
performers' own bodily
rhythms. This sheet music
is for String Quartet
(Violin/Violin/Viola/Cell
o). Richard Reed Parry is
familiarto millions as
the lead singer of rock
band Arcade Fire, yet his
foray into classical
music is equally worthy
of attention. Quartet For
Heart And Breath is an
experiment into using the
performers' heartbeats
and breathing to dictate
the tempo. The performers
are instructed to wear
stethoscopes in order to
listen to their
heartbeats closely, while
one complete breath
corresponds to one bar
and two heartbeats equal
two crotchets. The result
is a quiet and subtle
piece, as each instrument
has to play softly so as
to be able to keep in
time. The piece also has
a naturally occurring
dynamism in that the
players' heart rates
constantly change as the
performance goes on, with
each instrument falling
in and out of sync
sometimes culminating in
a beautiful moment of all
heartbeats matching each
other. Interestingly,
this unique aspect means
that no performance will
ever be the same, meaning
to hear or play this
composition will be a
truly once in a lifetime
experience. Quartet For
Heart And Breath is a
superbly one-of-a-kind
composition by Richard
Reed Parry . Commissioned
by the Kronos Quartet,
this piece makes for a
wonderfully distinctive
performance, with
fascinating implications
for the connection
between the music and the
body.

Based
on Wallace Stevens' poem
The Planet on the Table
this string quartet's
world is made of the
music and sounds of
remembered times or of
something heard that the
composer, Martin
Bresnick, liked. The
quartet has five
movements, each headed by
a quotation from one of
Stevens' poems as a point
of departure or pathway
into those remembered
sounds and music. What
matters is that my music,
like his (Stevens')
poetry, should bear some
lineament or character,
some affluence, if only
half perceived in the
poverty of its sounds, of
the planet of which it
was part.. Wallace
Stevens' poem The Planet
on the Table begins -
Ariel was glad he had
written his poems, They
were of a remembered time
Or of something seen that
he liked. In this string
quartet, also entitled

my planet is made of the

Stevens, my self and the
sun are one, and my
music, like his poetry,
although makings of my

The
String Quartet no. 4,
subtitled Dedication, was
commissioned by the CNDM
of Madrid to celebrate
the 250th Anniversary of
Beethoven and was written
for, and dedicated to,
the Cuarteto Casals
(2017). This one-movement
work, lasting some 11
minutes, is based on a
small motif from the op
quartet. 130 as a tribute
to the German master. The
work, that explores the
full range of the
technical, musical, and
emotional scope of the
quartet medium, has a
ternary arrangement, with
a slow introduction and a
conclusive stretta on the
B-flat note (like the one
that opens Op. 130). Its
course includes marked
contrasts between the
contemplative, lyrical,
static and suspensive
sections - in the manner
of stagnations - and
those with a more lively
tempo, playful and
occasionally festive.

Natu
re and landscape have
been the dominant themes
of much of Rhian Samuel's
vocal music of the last
ten years, projected
chiefly through the
poetry of Anne Stevenson,
and in her most recent
song-settings, the
writings of the
Pakistan-born Texas-based
poet Zulfikar Ghose. His
poem 'Conspiracy of the
Clouds' describes how,
the clouds having chosen
to become invisible,
'Even the astronauts on
the space shuttle /
looked down on a
cloudless America' as
hurricanes ravage
Louisiana and storms
engulf Nebraska. An
intriguing conceit in the
tradition of magic
realism, the text is
presented as a scena
lasting around 16
minutes, with
interpolations from
'Haze' by the
nineteenth-century New
England transcendentalist
Henry David Thoreau. Thus
modern fable and romantic
nature-description are
juxtaposed, and their
interaction becomes the
source of musical
contrasts too. Thoreau's
words are assigned
predominantly to the
vocalist's highest
register, those of Ghose
to her lower tessitura;
and the suggestive and
dramatic accompaniment
builds tension steadily
to the final ironic
response of an
incredulous American
public: not one of awe
and wonder, but the
question 'Why weren't we
told about it?

40
years lie between the

Redel was motivated by
the world's current

He includes a soprano

there. In my throat nests

After
finishing a serious
woodwind quintet in the
fall of 2001 [Tela
Lacerata], I found, in
the ensuing months, that
its cinders/ashes were
still impregnating my
eardrums. Therefore, when
I set out to write the
present string piece, I
realized that the musical
veins of the quartet,
like related cousins,
were sharing the same
blood as the earlier wind
composition. The
resultant Fifth Quartet
evolved into two large,
extended movements, each
one containing seven
parts that are played
without pause. As the
list of the various
sub-sections clearly
indicates, the formal
structure of the
movements appear to be
identical: each with
three main parts
enveloped by interludes,
plus an introduction and
coda. However, the
principal segments of the
first (slow) movement
gradually decrease in
length, while those of
the second (fast)
movement increase. In
addition, there is a
goodly amount of sonic
material stolen from the
first movement which
reappears -- stitched
together in a new guise
-- into the world of the
second. for example, the
bulk of Parts B and C of
Movement II are lifted
bodily, although
elaborately modified,
from their first
appearances in the
Introduction and Part A
of the fist movement.
This offers, I suppose at
least a hint of a
traditional
recapitulation. As was
true in the earlier
woodwind piece -- both
harmonically and
melodically -- the
embryonic growth of the
musical fabric (primarily
the tritone and perfect
fifth) is omnipresent,
almost obsessively,
throughout the course of
the whole work. These two
intervals, not unlike
plasticine, habitually
transform themselves into
the scales, chords, and
melodic lines that
pervade the texture of
the quartet. Owing to the
largely unrelieved
dramatic flow, the
shifting speed, and the
often fervent intensity,
the quartet places
considerable demands on
the dexterity,
virtuosity, and stamina
of the four performers.
String Quartet No. 5 is
approximately 22 minutes
in duration and
affectionately dedicated
to my violinist wife
Elizabeth, as a gift for
our 47 years together. It
was commissioned by the
Corigliano String
Quartet, New York, NY. --
Sydney Hodkinson.

Invaluable
Glimpses Schumann's close
collaboration with the
David quartet, together
with the valuable advice
of his friend Mendelssohn
Bartholdy, led the
composer to make
extensive changes to the
Streichquartette op. 41
before publication in
December 1842. The
present edition is hence
to be thought of as a
critical Urtext edition;
it offers in fact to
those interested, an
invaluable glimpse into
Schumann's creative
process and his striving
for the final form of his
string quartets. All the
deletions, changes, and
the original phrasing
were carefully worked out
in detail, restored, and
editorially identified in
the music text. A
detailed preface giving
the geneses of the works,
as well as pages of the
autograph score in
facsimile, complement the
edition. The parts are of
course so configured in
the reliable Breitkopf
quality that the quartets
can also be performed
today in the traditional
form. The present edition
was also used for the

The five
strings quartets by Jorg
Widmann are compact
studies, like those of
his teacher Wolfgang
Rihm. Performed
individually, the focus
is on the respective
central technical and
aesthetic idea. Performed
as a cycle, however, they
get closer to the
well-known classical
multi-movement form.The
theme of the first string
quartet is the
quintessential beginning:
in an introduction, it
takes some time for the
strained sounds to turn
into harmonics. Then it
is the viola, the 'poor
cousin' in the string
quartet literature, which
takes up and defines the
musical work. The
workconcludes with a
demanding eight-part
double-stopping polyphony
of all instruments.

In my
sixth work for a string
quartet, there is a very
simple melody concealed
in the background. That
melody (distant voices)
is played within an
extremely slow tempo, and
the notes which form the
melody gain different
textures by becoming
disassembled, and played
by different techniques.
In our daily lives, our
inner voices become
concealed by our daily
customs. The act of
composing, tome, is to
find out that concealed
distant voices, make
those voices spatialized
and construct them within
the musical time. This
work is dedicated to
Alois Lageder. Toshio
Hosokawa.
