‘Bella
Ciao’ originated
as an Italian folk song,
stemming all the way from
the late 19th century.
Many versions have since
appeared over the years,
but the song now has a
new lease of life owing
to a new dance adaption
as well as its feature as
the theme for the Netflix
series La Casa de
Papel, which has
inspired Anthony
Gröger to create this
dynamic arrangement for
string
quartet.

Johannes
Brahms wrote the Academic
Festival Overture op. 80
in Bad Ischl in the
summer of 1880 as a token
of thanks for the
honorary doctorate that
had been bestowed upon
him the previous year by
the University of
Breslau. In keeping with
the event, the work
contains various
folkloric and student
songs which Brahms
borrowed from the
well-known Commers-Buch
fur den deutschen
Studenten, a book
containing material for
the annual students'
social gatherings. The
overture's first
performance was held in
Breslau on 4 January 1881
under the direction of
the composer. The present
arrangement for string
quartet by Christian
Beyer compliments the
already available
overtures by Mozart,
which Beyer also arranged
for this
instrumentation.

Brahms. Arranged by Percy
Hall. Performance Music

Brahms
composed 21 Hungarian
Dances beginning in 1869.
All were composed for
piano, but many of them
have been orchestrated
and are performed by
symphony orchestras. They
are based on Hungarian
folk songs and dances,
and No. 5 is the most
popular. Standard
interpretation includes
many tempo changes with
the Violin 1 part
requiring more advanced
technique.

''The four
parts of the piece
originate from the piano
cycles of Johannes
Brahms. The identical
nature of the themes is
implied in their
descending direction,
while their differences
lie in their distinct
meters, key signatures
and tempo. I further
developed the differences
through the use of
different musical
alterations (of melody,
rhythm and timbre) while
the melodic contours are
always constant.
Depending on the
listener's attention, the
melody lines written
above one another will be
audible separately or
appear to be in unison.''
(Balázs
Horváth)
''Der
Stoff der vier Stimmen
des Stückes stammt aus
den Klavierzyklen von
Johannes Brahms. Die
Ãœbereinstimmung liegt
in ihrer abwärts
tendierenden Richtung,
ihr Unterschied hingegen
in abweichender Metrik,
Tonart und Tempi. Die
Unterschiede habe ich mit
Hilfe unterschiedlicher
musikalischer
(melodischer,
rhythmischer und tonaler)
Veränderungen
weitergewoben, während
die Struktur der Melodien
immer konstant bleibt.
Die übereinander
gelegten Melodienbögen
erklingen abhängig von
der Aufmerksamkeit des
Hörers teils jede
für sich, teils eine
Einheit bildend.''

Gran Torso,
for string quartet, was
composed in 1971 and
revised in 1978. It
belongs to a series of
works, including Air,
Kontrakadenz, Pression
and Klangschatten, whose
concept of material
attempts to free itself
from convention. That is,
instead of using the
sound itself as a point
of departure, structural
and formal hierarchies
are derived from the
mechanical and physical
conditions present during
the process of sound
production. It is clear
that such a radical break
with tradition is not
easily achieved: the
instrument, the given
means, the resonating
body itself (as the
embodiment of convention)
all work against such
attempts (with the
extended performance
techniques representing
only the tip of the
iceberg of deep-seated
contradictions where the
bourgeois artist is
concerned). Implicit in
such a challenge,
however, is a claim to
aesthetic pregnance: an
offer, if one would have
it, of uncomprosing
beauty.(Helmut
