composer writes: The slow
choral-like music which
initiates Adieu was the
result of an image or
almost a dream that I
had. Without being able
to explain why, I
imagined a procession of
people, maybe medieval
munks, wearing large gray
mantles with
Ku-Klux-Klan-like white
cowls on their heads,
something like a funeral
procession. The title
Adieu is partly a comment
on this funeral
procession, but also used
because the piece is
split up by three
slow-ascending glissandi,
a kind of farewell
glissandi which removes
the intervening music.
The first absorbing
glissando is soft and
removes both the slow
funeral choral and the
agitating figures in the
first half of the piece.
The second glissando is
given only to the cello
and crawls out from the
elegiac melodies in the
middle part. The third
and final glissando is
intense and agitating,
and prepares the way for
the end of the piece.
This end primarily deals
with the relationship
fast - slow. This
relationship is turned
topsy turvy: the music
gets faster and faster
until it is so fast that
it suddenly becomes slow,
so slow in fact that it
is very quickly able to
become extremely fast
again.

fourth that Wernick has
written for the Juilliard
Quartet. A commission by
the Philadelphia Chamber
Music Society, Wernick's
ninth string quartet was
premiered by the
Juilliard in November,
2015 and subsequently
taken on tour. The first
movement's affect (marked
'Assertive, Aggressive')
[compares] to Rockport's
forbidding coastline in
the eyes of the first.
settlers. This was an apt
analogy since the work's
musical language is, in
today's vernacular,
'gnarly.' [The second
movement]...a
'never-ending throb of
repeated notes'...the
effect of steadily
diminishing life-force,
though with a 'final
burst of hope from the
solo cello.' Again, the
composer made intriguing
use of many of the
different ways stringed
instruments can produce

Cuarteto Casals
approached me with the
idea of illuminating
Beethovens quartets anew,
you can imagine the many
thoughts and feelings
that where going through
my mind: what a joy, what
a great honor What an
intriguing
head-scratcher! How can
you possibly shine a new
light on something that
is already perfect?
Weeks, months went by in
search of a common ground
between the Master and
myself until I finally
found it in the
realization that a word
lays hidden in the St.
Johns hymn that gave
musical notes their
original name: Re, Sol,
Ut, Io (D, G, C, B in
English music notation)
Perfect!
“Resolutioâ€
in Latin means both the
resolution of aproblem
and the re-solution: a
re-blend of many elements
that will eventually
coagulate to make
something new. There was
finally themelodic and a
rhythmical canvas for my
piece. On this canvas I
wrote the story of a
funny little contest,
played on a sunny
Mediterranean square,
between street musicians
and Cuarteto Casals just
minutes before they are
about to go on stage to
perform Beethovens Harp
Quartet. After all the
characters, each in his
own way, had the chance
to tell their story, a
gentle rain starts to
fall, dissolving
(Re-solving) again the
music sheet to eventually
leave us with just a
white piece of paper for
somebody else to continue

In
six inter-related
movements, exhibiting
throughout great
concision and economy,
devotees of the
composer's style will
find much to admire in
the second of Farquhar's
four string quartets.The
composer writes: The
quartet is in six
movements which are
played without a break.
The odd-numbered
movements are quick, and
are all based on the same
material?an unsettled
chord with B as the
melody note, followed by
a downward arpeggio
flourish and a rising
stepwise melody. The
tempo in movements 3 and
5 gets progressively
faster, and the
atmosphere increasingly
scherzando in character.
The first two
even-numbered movements
(2 and 4) are slow
expressive intermezzi;
both feature an up-beat
of three repeated Bs
leading into chromatic
lines. The final movement
serves as an epilogue and
resolution; the
instruments are now muted
and the three repeated Bs
are now on the beat,
while off-beat
accompaniment figures
provide a gentle swaying
dance around them..

Gust
av Jenner (1865-1920), a
student of Brahms', wrote
only three string
quartets. The Third
String Quartet in F major
was completed in 1911 and
premiered by the Rebner
Quartet. Common to all
Jenner's Quartets is his
way of infusing the
classical model with his
own musical language,
both on an intellectual
plane and from a
technical point of view.
True to the tradition of
the genre, the classical
form of the string
quartet is retained,
without however showing
itself to be a constraint
in the completion of the
cycle. What stands out is
the sophistication of
detail and the purity of
form achieved through
integration of the
elements of composition
and nuances of mood.

piano can always be

essential requirement for
the performance of these

carols, two violins or
two flutes are quite
sufficient, especially if
voices are used as well.

particularly suitable for
domestic music-making,
whether or not voices are

combination for
shepherds' songs -

groups and music schools
have the advantage of a
wider choice of forces
and the possibility of
varying the
instrumentation within
the individual carols and
verses. Thus large and
small combinations can
alternate, strings and
flutes can play in turn,
and finally the piano can
be used by itself or to
reinforce other
instrumental
combinations, in which
case the cello can be
added, too.The pieces are
graded in increasing
order of difficulty; the
first carols are chosen
so that they can be
mastered by violinists
after as little as 4 to 6
months of learning their
instrument. The choise
and sequence of the
carols in this book, and
also their keys, were
determined, amongst other
factors, by their
suitability for the start
of violin tuition, both
in first and in third
position, so that these
carols make an especially
good supplement of
Christmas music to the
violin method of Fritz
and Gottfried Scharlach
(with its principle of
starting with the third

progressively increasing
difficulty of the carols
has resulted, for
example, in the three
Advent carols (nos.
23-25) being placed later

Though
conceived as four
separate movements, my
second string quartet has
a single motif which is
common to them all. This
is the three-note Muss es
sein? from Beethoven's
last quartet, Op. 135.
But whereas Beethoven's
theme is notated G E A
flat, thus giving it an F
minor connotation, I have
sued an alternative
spelling - G E G sharp -
which suggests an
ambiguous E minor-major.
This ambiguity, in fact,
becomes the tonal basis
of the whole work, only
to be resolved at the end
of the final movement.
Each movement begins with
a variant of the basic
motif on the cello. The
first has the original
form of the theme, while
the second has a
majorised version which
is also expressed as a
chord. The third
movement, with its
scherzoid middle section,
reverts to the
major-minor ambiguity of
the first, and the finale
begins with the majorised
version as an ostinato
accompaniment on
pizzicato cello. The slow
movement is sub-titled In
memoriam DSCH and
concludes with a
quotation of
Shostakovich's motto - D
E flat C B - which is
basically the same as
Beethoven's with the
addition of one note.
This is not to imply that
the work contains no
other thematic material.
One important theme, a
rising fifth and a
second, is also common to
three of the movements,
and is ultimately derived
from my first quartet,
Op. 1 of 27 years
earlier, to which this
second contribution to
the form is in many ways
like a sequel. Like the
earlier work, too, this
quartet is dedicated to
my wife.
