After years
of several personal and
creative crises, the last
two years of Beethoven's
life were marked by an
irrepressible creative
urge that was directed
almost exclusively
towards the string
quartet genre.
Of
all these late works, it
is the Quartet in A minor
op. 132 that most
impressively addresses
the overcoming of the
depression of the past
years. The middle of the
five movements is
aCanzona di
ringraziamentoentitled:Ho
ly Song of Thanksgiving
of a recovered person to
the deity in the Lydian
key.
In this
movement a slow
introduction is followed
by the heading:Feeling
renewed strength. Due to
the middle movement full
ofdivine power, this
string quartet is
certainly one of
Beethoven's most
emotional
compositions.
For
this new edition of the
Quartet op. 132,
Beethoven specialist
Jonathan Del Mar
consulted the autograph
as well as several sets
of parts corrected by
Beethoven, enabling him
to correct countless
inconsistencies and
unconvincing editorial
decisions of previous
editions.

Improvisati
onal energy inherent in
music that spouts The
Savage Mind, which is
mentioned by Japanese
musicologist and
anthopologist Masakuni
Kitazawa in his book
Sound as Metaphor, always
fascinates me. One of the
aims of writing this work
was to test whether a
highly refined medium
like a string quartet can
produce the energy.
'Inherent in music'
mentioned above can be
restated as 'inherent in
human being.' Beyond the
intellectual inquiring
mind, I hope this worl is
strongly connected to
'living in the present.'

The 3rd
String Quartet was
originally composed in
1982-3 to a commission
from The Adelaide
Festival, and premiered
by The Petra Quartet in
1983. Subsequent to this
quartet, I have composed
two more; No. 4 in 1986
and No. 5 in 2002.The
offer to re-publish this
work, led me to begin by
a process of amendment,
but ended in the
composition of a
virtually new quartet!
Only parts of the
original quartet have
been retained. I also
chose to 'frame' (in my
case this means an
inspirational focus and
filter), the quartet in a
new way too.In Flight
Music keeps the
4-movement format of the
original quartet, but is
now directly linked to a
life-long interest in
flight. The first two
movements are concerned
with aspects of humans in
flight, whilst the last
two deal with insects and
birds respectively.Since
all my music is these
days preceded by
visualisations in the
form of drawings,
wherever possible, this
quartet might be
performed with the four
drawings, one for each
movement, back-projected
behind the
players.Digital copies of
these drawings may be

George
Perle, now an instructor
at the University of
Louisville, was born in
1915, in Bayonne, New
Jersey. He began work on
the Third String Quartet
in 1946 in Japan and
completed it the
following year in New
York City. It was
presented for the first
time at a concert of the
Forum Group of the
International Society for
Contemporary Music, in
New York City on Feb. 7,
1948. The work is based
on the following
twelve-tone series, and
its permutations and
transpositions: d;
e-flat; a-flat; b; c;
f-sharp; c-sharp;
f-natural; g; a; e;
b-flat. The score is
arranged in the present
publication in such a way
as to render unnecessary
the extraction of parts
for performance. Each
player may read his part
directly from a copy of
the score.

When
some time ago I looked at
works by the painter Egon
Schiele whom I admire
very much, I thought
which paintings would
have been painted by this
artist, had he not died
much too early. I
envisioned the works he
had never painted. Isn't
it impressive with what
modest means he achieves
maximum emotional effect?
It was this thought, too,
that accompanied me
during my work on this
piece - though painting
techniques cannot be
directly reflected in the
music, of course. Tatjana
Komarova.
