Equali were
works written for equal,
or similar, instruments;
in the eighteenth century
they were almost always
used for funeral services
and usually employed a
quartet of trombones. The
most famous of these were
the three Beethoven wrote
for the Linz Cathedral in
Austria on All Soul's Day
1812. Two of these were
adapted later for male
voices and were sung at
Beethoven's
funeral.
These pieces
are some of the most
famous works for
trombones, no doubt due
to the fact that they
were composed by
Beethoven. They were
commissioned by Franz
Xaver Gloggl,
Kappelmeister of the city
of Linz, while Beethoven
was visiting his brother.
According to later
accounts by Gloggl's son,
although his father had a
complete collection of
trombones (soprano, alto,
tenor, bass or quart) the
three Equali were
performed by a
traditional quartet of
alto, tenor and bass
trombones.
This edition
offers a compromise: the
original score and parts
are given exactly as
written in the complete
works, and a version
designed for the less
experienced players: the
three movements are
transposed down one step,
edited with minor musical
suggestions, and all four
parts are written in bass
clef.
Dr. Mathie has
done the Trombone world a
great service in bringing
this great work in its
two forms to
publication.

Ave Maria is a
traditional Catholic
prayer asking for
intercession from the
Virgin Mary. The prayer
has often been set to
music.
Frank
Gazda has beautifully
arranged four musical
settings of the prayer
for Trombone Quartet or
four-part Trombone
Ensemble by: Jacob
Arcadelt (Renaissance),
Johann Joseph Fux
(Baroque), Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart
(Classical) and Giuseppe
Verdi
(Romantic).
Alth
ough originally composed
as four-part choral
settings, they work
perfectly for the
Trombone. Each piece
stands on its own as a
work of beauty, or the
four can be performed as
a whole. They are at a
moderately advanced level
of difficulty.

Jeff
Reyolds has arranged a
beautiful setting of the
Saint-Saens Veni Creator
Spiritus (Come Creator
Spirit, a 9th Century
Pentecost plainsong hymn)
for 4-part Trombone
Ensemble. The original
work for TTBB men's
chorus and optional Organ
was written in 1858.
Saint-Saens was a Roman
Catholic Church organist
in his early years and
produced a volume of
music that was easy to
sing. Mr. Reynolds
calls this music Church
Polyphonic style that
came out of the late
Renaissance and endured
for a couple centuries
into the Romantic
period. This work
begins with a beautiful
unison chant and moves
into four polyphony
sections concluding with
a soft Amen. The
music is of moderate
difficulty with the first
part in tenor clef.
Composed by
Antonin Dvorak. Arranged
by Cory Mixdorf.
Romantic. Score and
parts. Published by
Cherry Classics

Dvorak's
fairytale opera Rusalka
is one of his greatest
works and the 1st Act
aria Song to the Moon is
so well loved that it is
often played in concert
and arranged for
instrumental
performance.
Cory
Mixdorf's five-minute
arrangement retains the
magic of this wonderful
music with a Trombone
quartet version for
advanced performers.

Bruckner's
Pange Lingua motet,
composed in 1868 is a
hymn by the
thirteenth-century
theologian, St. Thomas
Aquinas. The setting of
the simple hymn is
chorale-like, with the
same music used for all
three verses, and a
lovely Amen being added
to mark its finish. The
text haunted Bruckner
since his early years and
he wrote a few settings
of it during his
lifetime. The music with
all of its simplicity has
some unexpected
dissonances.
Mr. Sauer's
lovely arrangement of
about 3 minutes in length
is appropriate for
moderately advanced
performers.
