Daily
Exercises after Terschack
for All Saxophones by
Marcel Mule (1901-2001)
is a set of twenty six
exercises, each one
lasting a page and a
half. Initially composed
by the flautist Adolph
Terschak, these Daily
Exercises After Terschack
would fit the skills of
advanced-intermediate and
advanced players, with
keys from 5 flats to 7
sharps. Marcel Mule
(1901-2001) is one of the
greatest French
saxophonists, renowned
worldwide for his work on
the classical saxophone
repertoire. He was
teaching his students how
to obtain a good quality
of sound and believed it
was dependent on the
embouchure, the emission,
the mastery of vibrato
and thus of breathing. He
wrote different methods
that focus on technique,
articulation and tone
productions such as 18
Exercises or Studies,
Varied Studies in All
Keys or 30 Great
Exercises or Studies
After Soussmann (in two
books), among others.

“Comp
osed by Jeanine Rueff,
Sonata for Alto Saxophone
solo is a piece for
advanced players lasting
12 and a half minutes.
Written in 9 pages, this
piece, quite challenging
(tempo, key ranges),
would be perfect for
musicians of advanced
level and above, while
requiring some serious
work to obtain the
correct result.
Wonderfully composed,
very technical yet very
lyrical, this piece is
really enjoyable and can
be used for recital or
contests. Jeanine Rueff
composed numerous pieces
for Saxophones that were
often used in contests,
as well as many pieces
for Saxhorn, Clarinet,
Horn and
Cornet.â€.

Exercises by Hyacinthe
Klose (1808-1880) has

articulations. Each
exercise is approximately
one-page long. Few

practise these 25
exercises: at different
speeds, with different
articulations, in the 12
different keys or without
the octave keys. Hyacinth

“Hell
o! Mr. Sax seeks to serve
saxophonists in their
progress on the
instrument by addressing,
in detail, pitch, timbre,
duration, articulation,
volume and attacks. These
aspects are not merely
discussed in their basic
form, for elements such
as quarter tones, aeolian
sounds and different
types of sounds which can
be produced on the
instrument are also
explored, among others.
The composer, saxophonist
Jean-Marie Londeix (b.
1932) studied at the
Paris Conservatoire
before embarking on a
successful concert career
taking him all over the
world. His position as
president of the

that many composers have
written Saxophone works

cemented Londeix's
professionalism and
expertise. With this in

“Sona
ta for Alto Saxophone and
Piano by Edison Demisov
was composed in1970 and
covers three movements.
The first part, Allegro,
shows serialism; the
second, Lento, focuses on
new techniques; with the
last one, Allegro
Moderato, reminiscent of
Jazz music. This
strong>Sonata for Alto
Saxophone and Piano,
dedicated to the French
Saxophonist Jean-Marie
Londeix, was strongly
influenced by Western
European music and
requires a certain level
of ability (intermediate
to advanced players),
especially for the second
movement. Edison Demisov
(1929-1996) was a
Russian, Siberian-born,
composer specialising in
alternative /
non-conformist Soviet
music. Strongly
influenced by the West,
he was often criticised
by his peers. He gained

and wrote numerous
concerti, sonatas and
other pieces.â€.

French
composer, Paul Dukas
(1865-1935) is best known
for his orchestral piece,
The Sorcerer's
Apprentice. However, his
catalogue represents many
other significant works
by the composer,
including Alla Gitana for
alto saxophone and piano.
Composed in 1909, Alla
Gitana was originally a
selection of vocal
studies. However, Marcel
Mule's transcription for
alto saxophone has made
this delightful work more
accessible. Dukas
reflects the French
romantic style in Alla
Gitana through uses of
flourishing semiquavers,
lyrical melodies and
chromaticism. For all
aspiring, advanced
saxophonists, Dukas' Alla
Gitana is an exquisite
addition to the
repertoire.

Quartet for
Saxophones is a piece for
four saxophones composed
by Alfred Desenclos in
1964, which lasts around
15 minutes and 30
seconds. Initially
written for the Marcel
Mule Quartet, Quartet for
Saxophones is a typical
French quartet, quite
smooth and suave. The
beginning of the piece
that sets up the Soprano
Saxophone against the
others is quite jazzy but
then it continues on to a
more lyrical part, quite
slow, with a simple
melody. The tension is
gradually built up and
the finale unison is
introduced quite
dramatically, with some
bursts of energy. This
Quartet for Saxophones
would fit a Quartet of
advanced to professional
players. Alfred Desenclos
(1912-1961) is a French
Composer who won the Prix
de Rome in 1942. He also
composed masses such as
'Messe de Requiem' and
other pieces for Double
Bass, Harp, Flute,
Trumpet or French
Horn.
