In 1828 Berlioz
wrote the Huit scènes
de Faust. The work was
soon withdrawn but almost
twenty years later each
of the eight scenes found
a place in the Lgende
dramatique La damnation
de Faust dedicated to
Franz Liszt. The first
part of the Damnation
exposes the figure of
Faust and has an
introductory nature. From
the second part onwards,
the course of action is
largely based on
Goethe’s
drama.
Contrasting
characters and dramatic
effect are of central
importance in
understanding
Berlioz’s musical
thought and his
compositional process.
Magic and fairy tale,
incantations and ghosts,
have been the
ever-recurring themes of
opera since the Baroque.
It is precisely this
fantasy in Berlioz's
Faust, the “Opra de
Concert en Quatre
actsâ€, which comes
very close to the spirit
of Goethe's
presentation.

If, during
his lifetime, Leopold
Mozart was highly
regarded as composer of
programmatic instrumental
music, it is his church
music which has proven to
comprise the more
important part of his
opus. This is also
especially true for the
influence which this
music had on the sacred
compositions of his son
Wolfgang Amadeus. In the
Missa in A (ca.1765), in
the manner of the times,
Leopold Mozart blends
baroque and gallant
stylistic elements and
through formal structure
and an expressive musical
language he gives the
Credo a special
importance. Score and

Bach's nine-movement
Magnificat (1749), the
first great vocal work
from his Berlin years, is
among the most
magnificent sounding, in
which the solo vocal
parts are also among the
most ambitious settings
of the Hymn to the Virgin
Mary (Luke 1). The work
fulfills all the criteria
required for a larger
sacred composition:
grandeur, dignity,
polyphonic and
concertante choral
movements, sensitive
(empfindsam) and
expressive arias, a long
concluding double fugue.
This richly scored
Magnificat (with 3
trumpets and timp. ad.
lib.), which is almost
one hour in duration,
would be well suited, for
example, as the central
work on every Christmas

Johann
Michael Haydn's Requiem
in C minor heavily
influenced W. A. Mozart's
Requiem. In just two
weeks Michael Haydn
composed his work in
December 1771, on the
occasion of the death of
his employer, Prince
Bishop Sigismund Count
Schrattenbach, who was
beloved among the people
and was a great patron of
the arts. The work was
written under the
impression of personal
tragedy: Haydn's only
child, Aloisia Josepha,
died in January 1771,
before completing her
first year of life. Parts
of the
Schrattenbach-Requiem
were played together with
the completed movements
from his second,
unfinished Requiem during
his own furneral service.
During the funeral
service in Vienna for
Joseph Haydn, parts of
his younger brother's
C-minor Requiem were also
performed. Score and

h the edition of the
Christmas Oratorio within
the framework of the
Stuttgart Bach Editions,
Carus presents a
scholarly edition for
practical performance.
The basis for this
publication are Bach's
autograph score and the
original parts. The
conducting score contains
an appendix with a
concise Critical Report
which provides
information about the
sources and their
readings; when necessary,
the latter are discussed
in more detail,
especially with regard to
how the editor arrived at
solutions for questions
of articulation which
differ from those found
in previous editions. The
representative,
clothbound volume is
supplemented by a study
score as well as a choral
score, a vocal score and
complete orchestral
material. In the
orchestral material short
excerpts containing the
conclusions of the secco
recitatives are rendered
with cue notes in
separate vocal systems
printed above the score
where the
instrumentalists pause,
thus enabling them make
their entrances in the
movements which follow
these recitatives. This

Handel set
the myth about the love
of the shepherd Acis for
the sea nymph Galatea
from Ovid’s
“Metamorphosesâ€
a total of three
times: in the cantata
“Aci, Galatea e
Polifemo†HWV 72
(1708), the masque
“Acis and
Galatea†HWV 49a
(1718) and finally the
pasticcio-like serenata
“Acis and
Galatea†HWV 49b
(1732) of which the
original version is now
made available in its
complete form for the
first time.
A
particular charm is
provided by the use of
two languages in the
serenata. The work was
originally conceived in
English, as was required
for the first
performance. However,
Handel’s Italian
singers were criticised
for their poor command of
English, – so in
the end, many numbers
were sung in Italian.
The extensive
appendix to the vocal
score includes the
additional arias and
newly composed movements
for the versions used in
the 1734 and 1736
performances.

The Italian
oratorio La Resurrezione
(The Resurrection) was
written during
Handel’s time in
Rome. It was performed on
Easter Sunday 1708 with
great splendour and
extravagance by a large
orchestra conducted by
Arcangelo Corelli in the
Palazzo Bonelli, the
Roman palazzo of
Handel’s patron
the Marchese Francesco
Maria Ruspoli. In its
dramatic structure and
characterisation of the
protagonists, the work
displays a striking
affinity with Italian
opera. Lucifer’s
raging sixty fourth notes
call to mind the demon
characters in Venetian
opera and
Maddalena’s arias
are so full of expressive
power and virtuosity that
Handel later incorporated
one of them into his
opera Agrippina. The
unusual musical richness
of this work and the
virtuosic and masterly
shaping of the arias make
it a welcome addition to
any concert programme.

After
the Passions-Cantate
,,Ein Lammlein geht und

the Christmas Oratorio is
the second major vocal
work by Homilius to
appear in print during
his lifetime. With an
unusually large
instrumental contingent,
Homilius set the, at that
time, much beloved
pastoral theme of the
shepherds in a most
sophisticated manner.
Each movement presents a
clearly differentiated,
atmospheric scene,
distinct from all the
other movements. This
applies to the varied
pastoral music, as well
as to the representation
of the mighty God by an
angel, whose entrance is
accompanied by trumpets

Wit
h its scoring for a large
number of performers, who
according to earlier

into various groups, this
Cantata is clearly a
festive work. In the
richness of its scoring
it was equalled, but not
surpassed, by Bach's
first Leipzig Cantate for
the Election of the Town
Council, BWV 119, of
1723. It is noticeable
that the words of BWV 63
relate to Christmas only

The
primary source on which
the new Carus Urtext
edition is based is the
first edition of the
score from 1800. Contrary
to normal custom, Haydn
published the score
himself in order to avoid
unauthorized publications
and to present an
optimally designed
edition from an authentic
hand. With this original
document, which has been
compared with additional
relevant sources, Carus
now offers a musical text
based on the latest
musicological findings.
The critical report
provides all of the
important data concerning
the edition in a compact
form suitable for
practical use [practical
performance]. A detailed
foreword offers insight
into the genesis of the
work, its construction
and reception and
illuminates compositional
and theological and
spiritual-historical
aspects. In addition to
the score, with singing
texts in two languages
(G. van Swieten's
original German and
English text), in the
interest of legibility,
vocal and choral scores
will be offered in two
separate editions (German
or English). This work is
now available in carus
