Francesco
Haym. Handel began
the composition of
Tamerlano, one of the
supreme masterpieces of
Baroque opera seria, on
3rd July 1724. The
libretto was an
adaptation by Nicola Haym
of Agostino Piovene's
Tamerlano, Tragedia per
musica, which had been
set to music by Francesco
Gasparini, and performed
in Venice in 1711. When
Handel dated the last
page of the autograph on
4rd July the work
appeared to be complete;
but during the three
months which passed
before the premiere at
the King's Theatre in the
Haymarket on 31 October,
so many alterations and
revisions were made that
a fresh performing-score
had to be writtern very
late in the proceedings,
to replace an earlier one
which is now
1ost.
There were
twelve performances
between 31 October 1724
and 8 May 1725. Handel
revived the opera only
once, in 1731, for three
performances. For this
revival he marked in the
performing score a number
of cuts in the
recitatives, which are
reproduced in the present
edition; there is more
recitative in Tamerlano
than in any other Handel
opera.

TheField Mass(1939) with
a text by Jiri Mucha

later took out the
cantata, making it into a

The

composed Samson directly
after completing the
Messiah. After its
premiere in 1743 in the
Covent Garden Theatre in
London, the work rapidly
became one of the
composerâ??s most
successful oratorios
alongside Esther and
Judas Maccabaeus. This
probably had as much to
do with the popular Old
Testament story of the
libretto as with
Handelâ??s masterly
shaping of the arias and
choruses.
By
including some movements
in the appendix, this
edition makes it possible
for the first time to
perform the work in its
original 1741 version.
The edition is based

oratorio for the first

This delightful set of
works in the keys of G,
A, and B-flat major takes
full advantage of
multiple stops, chords,
and fiddle writing that
lays easily under the
hand and is fun to play.
The fast movements are
vigorous and the
contrasting slow
movements are not
particularly fussy or
florid, though they
include some
ornamentation. In the
Allegro sections,
musicians should approach
the playing as they would
a work by Haydn or
Mozart: eighth and
quarter notes off the
string and at the frog,
and sixteenth notes on
the string. Stamitz's
players would have
followed the general rule
of the down bow, where
the strong beat would
begin with a down bow. In
Concerto No. 1 in G, the
Violin I parts reach to
sixth position, requiring
high G's. Unusual writing
for its time, these
passages are both logical
and easy for players to
find and hear. Cello and
bass parts reach high F's
on occasion and require
third, fourth and fifth
positions. The second
violin and viola parts do
not require extended
ranges, making this work
practical for an upper
intermediate orchestra.
The slow movements
transition between
different keys and
requires the low strings
to use extension notes
such as G-sharp and
A-sharp. $15.00 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks | | |

German/English. The
cantata Nach dir, Herr,
verlanget mich (O my
Lord, I long for thee)
BWV 150 is one of the
earliest cantatas from
Bach's Muhlhausen period.
Its authenticity was long
disputed, partly because
of the stylistic
characteristics of this
early work, but also
because the cantata only
survives in sources
dating from the period
after Bach's death.
However, in recent years
a hidden dedication to
Conrad Meckbach, a member
of the Muhlhausen town
council and patron of
Bach, has been
deciphered: the initial
letters of the free
poetry reveal the
acrostic Doctor Conrad
Meckbach (in the 18th
century spelling),
revealing a link to the
city of Muhlhausen and
almost certainly
confirming Bach's
authorship of the
cantata. The occasion of
the composition of the
work is still unknown.
The small instrumental
scoring for just two
violins, bassoon, and
continuo, plus the fact
that only the soprano is
given a solo movement,
suggest a performance
with modest resources.

German. Telemann's
setting of Psalm 121 I
lift up mine eyes to the
hills reveals him to be
an admirer of French
music. Constructed on the
example of a grand motet,
each of the movements is
patterned after the
French model: the model
of an overture for the
first movement, the
echoes of a chaconne in
the second, the dotted
gigue rhythms of the
Canarie in the third. In
addition there is the
lively exchange between
choir and solo ensemble,
and much more. The music
is full of poetic
imagery, whenever the
occasion arises, as at
the very beginning with
the words Ich hebe meine
Augen auf, or in a later
passage with the text
Siehe, der Hüter
Israel schläft noch
schlummert nicht (Behold,
he that keepeth Israel
shall neither slumber nor
sleep). Score and part
