Since the
days of Renaissance
composers - beyond
accusations of plagiarism
- the admiration for a
fellow composer has taken
the form of quotations
from his works or even
new versions of his
works. No less a work
from the classical period
than Joseph Haydn's
oratorio The Creation
(first performed in
1798), was the basis for
the Schopfungsmesse

Salzburg Court and
Cathedral Music Director,
Luigi Gatti. Gatti heard
the oratorio in Salzburg

Johann Michael Haydn in
1800. With great skill
and sensitivity Gatti was

choruses and arias of The
Creation with the text of
the Mass (at times he
reduced and adapted the
instrumentation), without
doing harm to the admired
original. Score available

The
best-known setting of the
Requiem Mass before
Mozart's unfinished work
is by the celebrated
opera composer Niccolo
Jommelli. The Missa pro
defunctis was composed in
1756, during Jommelli's
time as Kapellmeister at
the court of the
Wurttemberg Duke Carl
Eugen, on the occasion of
the death of the Dowager
Duchess Maria Augusta.
The work went on to enjoy
wide circulation and
numerous further
performances. Jommelli
composed it in the
Neapolitan style, with
orchestral forces of just
strings and basso
continuo. The simple but
effective choral
movements are partly
contrapuntal in the stile
antico, and partly with
solo/tutti alternation
and numerous suspended
dissonances, whilst in
the solo parts the opera
composer can be
recognized. This
beautiful sounding Missa
pro defunctis is now
published for the first
time in a critical
edition. Where sections
are missing in Jommelli's
composition, the Appendix
contains settings by
another composer from his
circle, Nicola Sala. *

Com
posed in 1727 for a
eulogy and funeral
oration for Electress
Christiane Eberhardine in
the Leipzig University
church, the music for the
funeral ode is well-known
today above all through
reconstructions of Bach's
St Mark Passion, in which
large parts of this
cantata were probably
re-used, but of which
only the text survives.
With the funeral ode we
have one of Bach's
strongest and most
fascinating vocal
compositions. Although
Gottsched's text is
associated with a
particular occasion, it
is distinguished in its
literary quality from
many secular cantatas and
it is entirely
appropriate to perform
this impressive cantata
in concerts. Score and

German/English. Text:
Franz Xaver
Huber.
In his
Passion oratorio Christus
am Olberge [The Mount of
Olives], Beethoven
succeeded firstly in
building on the 18th
century tradition, and
secondly in putting his
own personal stamp on the
nascent genre of
German-language oratorio
- the Vienna performances
of Haydn's Die Schopfung
and Die Jahreszeiten had
only taken place a few
years earlier. In
composing the work he
looked towards
contemporary opera, using
a text by an opera
librettist to depict in
music the dramatic
situation of the doubting
Jesus in the Garden of
Gethsemane and his
arrest. Yet we do not do
justice to Beethoven's
work if we simply regard
it as a successor work to
Graun's Der Tod Jesu or
even Bach's St Matthew
Passion. Beethoven's
Christus am Olberge is
characterized less by
religious devotion and
much more by the dramatic
realization of a specific
situation in the Passion
story in deeply-felt
musical scenes. With its
magnificent, almost
operatic music, this is a
different Passion
oratorio which is
definitely worth hearing
and experiencing - and in
this form it is without
doubt unique in the
history of
vocal-instrumental sacred
music. The edition
follows the first printed
edition in music and
text; differences in the
text in the libretto
originally set by
Beethoven are given as a
second text, and a
singable English
translation is underlaid.
