Actus tragicus or Gottes

Zeit BWV 106 remains one
of Bach's best-known and
most admired works, one
which continues to
resonate to this day - a
work of genius such as
even great masters seldom
achieve (Alfred Durr).
The cantata is one of the
earliest known vocal
works by Johann Sebastian
Bach. It was written
during his time at
Muhlhausen, probably in
1707, when Bach took up
the position of organist
at the Divi Blasii
Church. A possible
occasion for its
composition may have been
the funeral of the mayor
of Muhlhausen, Adolph
Strecker. The short, slow
Sonatina with two
recorders, two gambas and
continuo gets the
listener into the mood of
the character of the
cantata. This
instrumental combination
is unique in Bach's vocal
output, but could derive
from a central German
tradition. This new
edition is a

Latin. During the
summer of 1774 Mozart
wrote two Masses within a
few weeks: the Missa
brevis in F major, K.
192, and the Missa brevis
in D major, K. 194. A
feature common to both
compositions as well as
to the Dixit et
Magnificat K. 193,
written at about the same
time, and the Trinitias
Mass K. 167 of the
previous year, is a more
or less strongly evident
tendency towards
contrapuntal writing.
However, while the Dixit
et Magnificat and the
Trinitas Mass approach
the late-baroque style,
in these two brevis
Masses Mozart sought to
combine traditional
polyphonic techniques
with a more modern
musical language. This

The St. John Passion
ranks among the great
vocal works from Bach's
Leipzig years. In
contrast to his other
large-scale choral works,
however, Bach never gave
this work a definitive
final form. Rather, for
every performance he made
numerous changes. All
previous editions of the
St. John Passion have
combined readings from
various layers of
sources. The wish often
expressed by conductors
to perform an authentic
version is made possible
for the first time with
the present edition in
this fourth and final

performed under Bach's
direction in 1749. At the

in the paraphrase by
Martin Luther has become

German/English. Text:
Franz Xaver
Huber. In his
Passion oratorio Christus
am Olberge [The Mount of
Olives], Beethoven
succeeded firstly in
building on the 18th
century tradition, and
secondly in putting his
own personal stamp on the
nascent genre of
German-language oratorio
- the Vienna performances
of Haydn's Die Schopfung
and Die Jahreszeiten had
only taken place a few
years earlier. In
composing the work he
looked towards
contemporary opera, using
a text by an opera
librettist to depict in
music the dramatic
situation of the doubting
Jesus in the Garden of
Gethsemane and his
arrest. Yet we do not do
justice to Beethoven's
work if we simply regard
it as a successor work to
Graun's Der Tod Jesu or
even Bach's St Matthew
Passion. Beethoven's
Christus am Olberge is
characterized less by
religious devotion and
much more by the dramatic
realization of a specific
situation in the Passion
story in deeply-felt
musical scenes. With its
magnificent, almost
operatic music, this is a
different Passion
oratorio which is
definitely worth hearing
and experiencing - and in
this form it is without
doubt unique in the
history of
vocal-instrumental sacred
music. The edition
follows the first printed
edition in music and
text; differences in the
text in the libretto
originally set by
Beethoven are given as a
second text, and a
singable English
translation is underlaid.

Masses by Dittersdorf
which have been handed
down, the present Mass,
which is being published
for the first time,
enjoyed a special
popularity during the
composer's lifetime and
it was even performed for
the coronation of emperor
Franz II in the Frankfurt
Cathedral. This solemn,
prestigious Mass shows
evidence of choral
movements in traditional
contrapuntal church style
as well solo parts with a
modern, cantabile
character. In addition,
the Gloria includes a
lengthy virtuosic violin
solo, which also lends
the work a concertante
character (Dittersdorf
was a professional
violinist). $86.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks | | |
