Latin. Preface: Barry
Cooper. Beethoven
described his grandly
conceived â??Missa
solemnisâ? as â??my
greatest workâ? and
sold manuscript copies to
some of the subscribers
even before it had
appeared in
print.
This Urtext
edition takes into
account all the sources
including the old and the
new complete editions
whose relationship is
clearly explained in a
stemma. In several
passages the renowned
Beethoven specialist
Barry Cooper has arrived
at variant readings, such
as in the
â??Sanctusâ?, where
the choir enters instead
of the soloists, rather
than coming in at
â??Pleni sunt
coeliâ?. No less
worthy of mention is the
addition of the soloists
to the choir in most of
the â??Credoâ?. These
matters and many other
editorial decisions are
documented in the
detailed Critical
Commentary
(Eng).
The
appendix contains
Beethovenâ??s
arrangement of the
Gregorian chant
â??Tantum ergoâ? for
the first time. This was
composed at the same time
as the â??Missa
solemnisâ? and most
probably stands in a
close relation to
it.
This edition
is designed for everyone
seeking a combination of
a reliable musical text
and well-founded
editorial suggestions for
a successful performance
of this
masterpiece.

Latin. Anton
Bruckner's Te Deum - a
high point in the
composer's output and one
of the most important
works of the sacred
choral repertoire in the
19th century - is now
available in a modern,
scholarly edition. The
Carus edition draws on
both the two sources
regarded as important,
the autograph score and
the first printed
edition, with careful
consideration given to
variant readings. And so
a music text has been
prepared which reflects
the composer's intentions
as closely as possible.
Great emphasis has been
placed on a clear-to-read
layout of the full score
pages, as well as
excellent legibility for
the parts, which are
available on sale. With
current performance
practice in mind, the
clarinet parts are
notated in B flat instead
of A, corresponding with
the first printed
edition. The vocal score
has been newly prepared
to reflect current
practical requirements.
As an economical
alternative, a chorus
score is available.
Bruckner's Te Deum is
also available in carus
music, the choir app. The
app contains the music
and a recording, as well
as a coach to help with
learning each choral
part. In preparation:
arrangement of the Te
Deum for soli, choir,
brass quintet and organ.

Latin. With a total
duration of about 30
minutes, Schubert's Mass
in B flat major (D 324),
written in 1815, is
considerably longer than
Mozart's and Haydn's
classical Brevis masses,
and its large
instrumental ensemble
with strings, woodwinds,
brass and timpani even
gives it a clearly solemn
character. Overall,
Schubert was inspired by
the late Haydn style of
the symphonic mass (e.g.,
the division into six
large movements, the
omission of arias for the
vocal soloists who are
instead juxtaposed with
the choir, singing short
passages either singly or
as a group) without, of
course, achieving its
temporal expansion. This
is a representative,
musically appealing work
that excels with its
multi-layered, detailed
text treatment. It is,
therefore, suitable for
special occasions and the
high feasts of the church
year and can be mastered
well by experienced
church choirs. Score and

Text: Christian Friedrich
Henrici
(Picander). In
composing the Cantata BWV
149 Bach reverted to
parts of an earlier work:
The opening chorus is a
parody of the Jadgkantate
BWV 208 (Hunting
Cantata). In addition to
smaller changes which
were made necessary due
to the text, Bach used
trumpets instead of
horns. For this purpose
he transposed the
movement from F major to
C major. Musically, the
form of the three arias
and their instrumentation
is rich in variety. The
bass aria (2nd mvt.) is
characterized by an
active continuo
accompaniment. After the
secco recitative an
extended dance like
soprano aria with string
accompaniment follows.
The third aria (6th mvt.)
is impressive due to the
animated melody and the
forming of a canon
between the voices, and
especially through the
entry of the bassoon as
the instrumental
counterpart to a duet
between the alto and
tenor. Score and parts

duration of about 30

in B flat major (D 324),
written in 1815, is
considerably longer than
Mozart's and Haydn's
classical Brevis masses,

gives it a clearly solemn
character. Overall,
Schubert was inspired by
the late Haydn style of

instead juxtaposed with
the choir, singing short

German/English. The
cantata Hochsterwunschtes
Freudenfest BWV 194 was
composed for an organ
dedication on 2 November
1723 in Stormthal,
Saxony. A year later, and
with just a few
alterations, the cantata
was performed again in
Leipzig on Trinity
Sunday. Our edition takes
this Leipzig version of
1724 as its source. The
special occasion of its
composition is reflected
in the extent of the
composition which has
twelve, instead of the
usual six, movements. The
orchestral scoring is for
strings and three
obbligato oboes. A
special feature of the
cantata is its structure
as an orchestral suite.
The beginning is a
spirited opening chorus
in the style of a French
overture. The bass aria
in the third movement has
the character of a
pastorale, and the
following aria (movement
5) in turn has the
character of a gavotte,
etc. A simple four-part
chorale concludes this
multifaceted composition,
marked by some extremely
heartfelt moments. Score

Cantata BWV 42 begins
with a magnificent
Sinfonia in the style of
the Brandenburg
Concertos. It is possible
that Bach took this
movement from a concerto
which he had composed
earlier. The first aria,
for alto with obbligato

be derived from the
middle movement of this
concerto. The heroic bass
aria, a statement of the
certainty of faith, forms
a weighty counterpart to
the opening movement.

Text: Christian Friedrich
Henrici
(Picander). In
composing the Cantata BWV
149 Bach reverted to
parts of an earlier work:
The opening chorus is a
parody of the Jadgkantate
BWV 208 (Hunting
Cantata). In addition to
smaller changes which
were made necessary due
to the text, Bach used
trumpets instead of
horns. For this purpose
he transposed the
movement from F major to
C major. Musically, the
form of the three arias
and their instrumentation
is rich in variety. The
bass aria (2nd mvt.) is
characterized by an
active continuo
accompaniment. After the
secco recitative an
extended dance like
soprano aria with string
accompaniment follows.
The third aria (6th mvt.)
is impressive due to the
animated melody and the
forming of a canon
between the voices, and
especially through the
entry of the bassoon as
the instrumental
counterpart to a duet
between the alto and
tenor. Score available
