In
the 19th and early 20th
centuries, transcriptions
of large (choral)
symphonic works for two
pianos were extremely
popular, as they enabled
a large audience to get
to know classical
compositions in an age
before recorded music. In
many cases, world-famous
pieces were first
performed in such a
version –
including
Bruckner’s Te
Deum. The Stuttgart
composer, pianist and
experienced piano-duo
performer Sebastian
Bartmann was commissioned
by the Landesakademie
für die musizierende
Jugend in
Baden-Württemberg
Ochsenhausen to newly
arrange Bruckner’s
Te Deum and the Mass in D
minor for soloists,
choir, and two pianos. A
timpani part (ad libitum)
provides additional
color. The arrangements
are based on the original
Carus editions. The vocal
scores and choral scores
of the original version
can also be
used.While
Bruckner’s
symphonic approach
becomes evident for the
first time in the Mass in
D minor from 1864, the
work does not place the
same high demands on the
performers as the two
later masses. This
arrangement for soloists,
choir and 2 pianos has an
air of transparency,
rather like a work of
chamber music.. Score

Bach's
well-known church cantata
Schwingt freudig euch
empor BWV 36 (Up joyous
raise your song), first
heard in its final
version on First Advent
Sunday in 1731 at the
Leipzig Nikolaikirche,
can be traced back to a
secular birthday cantata
from 1725. The text is
now revised to render the
events of Advent - the
rejoicing of the opening
chorus, the loving
veneration and the
warm-hearted welcome of
the three solo arias
retained from the
original cantata now all
apply to the Messiah,
who, as once in
Jerusalem, should find a
place in the hearts of
the faithful. However,
their unmistakeable
Advent character derives
from the fact that Bach
contrasts the four
festive settings from the
secular cantata with
three strophes from
Luther's Advent chorale,
Nun komm, der Heiden
Heiland, thus at the same
time giving a voice to
the Mystery of God made
man. Score available

Handel
composed his first
Italian oratorioLa
Bellezza ravveduta nel
trionfo del Tempo e del
DisingannoHWV 46a in
1707. It is based on an
allegorical moral
libretto written by
Cardinal Benedetto
Pamphili who also
commissioned this
work.
Disinganno
(Illumination) and Tempo
(Time) try to get the
young, beautiful and
frivolous Bellezza
(Beauty) to recognise the
true values of life and
to act accordingly. The
audience accompanies
Bellezza in her spiritual
development, in which she
increasingly distances
herself from Piacere
(Pleasure) and listens
more and more to Tempo
and
Disinganno.
The
oratorio contains some of
the most beautiful music
Handel ever composed.
This includes the
enchanting ariaLascia la
spina, in which he uses
the music of the
sarabande from the
operaAlmira, composed in
Hamburg in 1704, and
which then achieved
immortal fame
inRinaldo(1711) asLascia
ch'io pianga.

The
opening chorus uses the
first verse of the old
plainsong hymn Veni
redemptor gentium, which
in the paraphrase by
Martin Luther has become
the most important Advent
hymn of the Protestant
Church. Bach introduces
the traditional plainsong
melody in the form of a
French overture, here
symbolizing the entry of
the King of Heaven, thus
creating an unusual and
splendid opening piece
for the beginning of the
church year. Score and
