Cooper.
Beethoven
described his grandly
conceived â??Missa
solemnisâ? as â??my
greatest workâ? and
sold manuscript copies to
some of the subscribers
even before it had
appeared in
print.
This Urtext
edition takes into
account all the sources
including the old and the
new complete editions
whose relationship is
clearly explained in a
stemma. In several
passages the renowned
Beethoven specialist
Barry Cooper has arrived
at variant readings, such
as in the
â??Sanctusâ?, where
the choir enters instead
of the soloists, rather
than coming in at
â??Pleni sunt
coeliâ?. No less
worthy of mention is the
addition of the soloists
to the choir in most of
the â??Credoâ?. These
matters and many other
editorial decisions are
documented in the
detailed Critical
Commentary
(Eng).
The
appendix contains
Beethovenâ??s
arrangement of the
Gregorian chant
â??Tantum ergoâ? for
the first time. This was
composed at the same time
as the â??Missa
solemnisâ? and most
probably stands in a
close relation to
it.
This edition
is designed for everyone
seeking a combination of
a reliable musical text
and well-founded
editorial suggestions for
a successful performance
of this
masterpiece.

The motets
and choral pieces,
composed with the
distinctive features of
the Madeleine organ in
mind, enchant with their
colourful, floating
harmonies and convey a
certain intimacy even
with their ritualized
Latin texts. These works
are very well suited for
performances by small
vocal ensembles. A
novelty is the inclusion
of the double bass part
(ad libitum) which does
not appear consistently
in the first editions but
corresponds to the
musical practice at the
Madeleine.
Numerou

â??Cantique de Jean

â??Messe basseâ? are

In 1828 Berlioz
wrote the Huit scènes
de Faust. The work was
soon withdrawn but almost
twenty years later each
of the eight scenes found
a place in the Lgende
dramatique La damnation
de Faust dedicated to
Franz Liszt. The first
part of the Damnation
exposes the figure of
Faust and has an
introductory nature. From
the second part onwards,
the course of action is
largely based on
Goethe’s
drama.
Contrasting
characters and dramatic
effect are of central
importance in
understanding
Berlioz’s musical
thought and his
compositional process.
Magic and fairy tale,
incantations and ghosts,
have been the
ever-recurring themes of
opera since the Baroque.
It is precisely this
fantasy in Berlioz's
Faust, the “Opra de
Concert en Quatre
actsâ€, which comes
very close to the spirit
of Goethe's
presentation.

This
publication offers a
source-critical edition
of Mozartâ??s
fragmentary
â??Requiemâ? as well
as an alternative to the
traditional Sümayr
version. It makes it
possible to perform 1)
the fragment, identified
in print in both the
score and the parts, 2)
the authentic sections
left incomplete by
Mozart, now in a
stylistically appropriate
orchestration, and 3)
those sections missing
entirely in the fragment,
newly added in
Mozartâ??s idiom taking
into account historical
additions by Sümayr
and Eybler.
When
completing the fragment,
the editor drew on
comprehensive comparative
and analytical studies of
Mozartâ??s church style
and compositional
workmanship. The
influence of Handel and
Bach manifested in his
final years, particularly
in the â??Requiemâ?
fragment, is taken into
account in those sections
requiring completion or
fresh
composition.
At
two points readers may
choose between
alternative movements (or
sections), since
proceeding from
SüÃ?mayrâ??s
historical version, two
divergent options cannot
be weighed against each
other but each one may
well reflect Mozartâ??s
intentions: the
â??Lacrimosaâ? may
end with or without
â??Amenâ? fugue, and
the â??Sanctusâ? may
begin in the customary D
major or in D minor.
Above all, this makes it
possible to retain the
B-flat major
â??Hosannaâ? from
SüÃ?mayrâ??s
autograph, a movement
which, until now, has not
been appreciated as
compositionally
flawless.
