Language: English,

Heinrich, Artie. Text:
Gay, John / Hughes, John
/ Pope, Alexander /
Giuvo,
Nicola. Handel set
the myth about the love
of the shepherd Acis for
the sea nymph Galatea
from Ovid’s
“Metamorphosesâ€
a total of three
times: in the cantata
“Aci, Galatea e
Polifemo†HWV 72
(1708), the masque
“Acis and
Galatea†HWV 49a
(1718) and finally the
pasticcio-like serenata
“Acis and
Galatea†HWV 49b
(1732) of which the
original version is now
made available in its
complete form for the
first time.
A
particular charm is
provided by the use of
two languages in the
serenata. The work was
originally conceived in
English, as was required
for the first
performance. However,
Handel’s Italian
singers were criticised
for their poor command of
English, – so in
the end, many numbers
were sung in Italian.
The extensive
appendix to the vocal
score includes the
additional arias and
newly composed movements
for the versions used in
the 1734 and 1736
performances.

English. Handel's
Utrecht Te Deum HWV 278
enthralled London
audiences right from its
first performance, and it
continues to do so today
in concert halls and
churches all over the
world. It was performed
for the first time in a
festive service on 13
July 1713 in St. Paul's
Cathedral to celebrate
the Peace marking the end
of the twelve year-long
War of the Spanish
Succession in 1713. The
Te Deum was the first
commission by the English
royal house and was also
Handel's first sacred
work in the English
language. For Handel the
Utrecht Te Deum was an
important milestone at
the beginning of his
London career. The
composition brought him
an annual pension from
Queen Anne and helped him
to establish himself as a
composer of prestigious
music for the English
royal family. Four
further settings of the
Ambrosian hymn of praise
by Handel followed,
including the equally
popular Dettingen Te Deum
(Carus 55.238). The six
soloists required can in
practice be reduced to
four, and the Te Deum
does not contain any
stand-alone arias. The
chorus is scored in five
parts in a few movements
(SSATB), with the
concluding doxology
beginning in double-choir
scoring (SST/AATB). For
this frequently-performed
work Carus offers a
musical text reflecting
the latest scholarly
discoveries. The Critical
Report contains
information on all the
important facts about the
work in a practicable,
compact form. A detailed
foreword contains
insights into the
creation of the work and
its reception. The vocal
score, chorus score, and
orchestral parts provide
for the needs of
practical performance;
these are complemented by
carus music, the choir
app for practising the
choral parts, as well as
the Carus Choir Coach
practice CDs and a Vocal

Newburgh
Hamilton. The
“Occasional
Oratorio†was
composed as a reaction to
a political event which
shook the whole of
England : the Jacobite
rebellion of 1745-46
against the Hanoverian
monarchy was crushed
under the leadership of
the Duke of Cumberland.
Handel, who was working
on the oratorio “
Judas Maccabaeusâ€
at the time, composed the
oratorio quickly and
reused some movements
from earlier works. With
the choice of a libretto
by Newburgh Hamilton he
demonstrated his support
for the monarchy. The
work was first performed
on 14 February 1746 at
the Covent Garden Theatre
in London . For
the first time this
seldomly performed
oratorio which
nevertheless contains
wonderful music is
available in an Urtext
edition based on the
“ Halle Handel
Edition†. All
available sources have
been consulted. Further
movements which Handel
added for later
performances are included
in the appendix.

Latin. In the 19th
and early 20th centuries,
transcriptions of large
(choral) symphonic works
for two pianos were
extremely popular: They
enabled a large audience
to get to know classical
compositions in an age
before recorded music. In
many cases, world-famous
works were first
performed in such a
version â?? including
Brucknerâ??s Te Deum.
Unfortunately, only a few
bars of this
transcription have
survived.The
Stuttgart composer,
pianist and experienced
piano-duo performer
Sebastian Bartmann was
commissioned by the
Landesakademie für die
musizierende Jugend in
Baden-Württemberg
Ochsenhausen to newly
arrange Brucknerâ??s Te
Deum and the Mass in D
minor for soloists, choir
and two pianos. A timpani
part (ad libitum)
provides additional
color. The arrangements
are based on the original
Carus editions. The vocal
scores and choral scores
of the original version
can also be
used.Today the Te
Deum is Brucknerâ??s
most frequently performed
vocal work. The greatest
challenges for any choir
are the high register and
the enormous
orchestration of this
extremely effective
piece: The singers are
often required to declaim
against a large orchestra
performing forte
fortissimo! This problem
is resolved in the
arrangement for two
pianos; moreover, the
scaling back of the sonic
forces helps reveal
compositional structures
that otherwise can all
too easily get lost in
the intoxicating
orchestral sound..

Text: Berlioz, Hector /
Nerval, Gérard
de. In 1828 Berlioz
wrote the Huit scènes
de Faust. The work was
soon withdrawn but almost
twenty years later each
of the eight scenes found
a place in the Lgende
dramatique La damnation
de Faust dedicated to
Franz Liszt. The first
part of the Damnation
exposes the figure of
Faust and has an
introductory nature. From
the second part onwards,
the course of action is
largely based on
Goethe’s
drama.
Contrasting
characters and dramatic
effect are of central
importance in
understanding
Berlioz’s musical
thought and his
compositional process.
Magic and fairy tale,
incantations and ghosts,
have been the
ever-recurring themes of
opera since the Baroque.
It is precisely this
fantasy in Berlioz's
Faust, the “Opra de
Concert en Quatre
actsâ€, which comes
very close to the spirit
of Goethe's
presentation.

Latin. Johann Georg
Zechner is considered to
be one of the most
prolific Austrian
composers of church music
during the time of Maria
Theresa. His ca. 250
surviving compositions,
including works in
practically all genre of
church music, found a
wide reception in many
Austrian, Bohemian and
Moravian monasteries and
in pilgrimage churches.
His Grosse Orgelsolomesse
was probably composed in
1761 for the dedication
of the organ in the
monastery at Gottweig. As
in other of his late
works, the strict royal
style, which essentially
characterizes Zechner's
compositions, is tempered
through the use of
elements of the galant
style of composition. The
organ plays solistically
in all of the movements.
