Preface: Stockigt, Janice
B. / Luks,
Václav. The
â??Missa Divi
Xaveriiâ? ZWV 12, an
expansive and unusually
richly scored work, marks
a highlight in the uvre
of Jan Dismas Zelenka
(1679-1745). It was
composed in 1729 while he
was working at the
Dresden court.
The
principal source of this
first edition is the
damaged autograph score
which had long been kept
under lock and key.
Passages missing because
of its damaged condition
have been supplemented
using secondary sources
or reconstructed by
Václav Luks, clearly
marked as such in the
musical text.
The
first performance to use
the present new edition
took place in the summer
of 2014, when it was
performed at the Utrecht
Early Music Festival. A
CD recording by Collegium
1704, conducted by
Václav Luks, has been
released by the label
Accent (ACC

Paul Horn. The
history of the genesis of
the Requiem is entwined
with legends and
anecdotes. The burdens of
the composition and
performance of La
Clemenza di Tito and Die
Zauberflote, and an acute
infection led to the
collapse and death of the
composer following a
short illness. Mozart
left his wife in
considerable debt.
Constanze therefore
turned to Mozart's
friends, asking them to
complete the fragment.
After two failed
attempts, the task passed
to Mozart's pupil Franz
Xaver Sussmayr, who
completed the Requiem in
the form known today,
using working materials
that are no longer
extant, and perhaps
verbal instructions from
the composer. Today the
Sussmayr version is still
the most well known, and
it is doubtless the one
with the closest
historical ties to
Mozart. This work is now

language:
German/English. The
cantata Argre dich, o
Seele, nicht BWV 186 is
in a sense the companion
work to the much
better-known cantata Herz
und Mund und Tat und
Leben BWV 147. Both were
composed in Advent 1716
as Bach's last two
cantatas for the Weimar
court, and both were
arranged for another
Sunday in Bach's first
Leipzig cantata cycle by
the addition of
recitatives and a
large-scale chorale
movement, heard at the
end of both parts. The
sound of the Cantata BWV
186 is characterized by
the four-part woodwind
ensemble writing. The
final chorale, heard
twice, anticipates the
opening choruses of the
chorale cantatas from
Bach's second cycle.
Cantata BWV 186 for the
7th Sunday after Trinity
is a considerably
expanded reworking of a
Weimar Advent cantata of
1716. Only the text
survives of the Advent
cantata, but Diethard
Hellmann has been able to
reconstruct the work from
the later version (Carus
31.186). Score and part
