Apart from the collection of Classical Manuscripts composed by the violin virtuoso Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962) which he had passed off as transcriptions of settings of old masters, the violinist published original works early on as well. Kreisler himself liked to play them as encore pieces, thus sweetening many a concert with this 'musical confectionery'. Famous tunes are, for example, Liebesfreud, Liebesleid and Schön Rosmarin, his old Viennese dance tunes, in which Kreisler evoked the coffee-house atmosphere of his home town with beautiful melodies and mellifluous harmonies. Another wonderful example is his Marche miniature viennoise, with its humorous theme and a rather march-like middle section - and everywhere, Kreisler takes the audience by surprise with a little Viennese snide humour. Kreisler's original compositions are lovely miniatures, lively and catchy, even with a touch of melancholy - yet full of charm and elegance. Par MARTINU BOHUSLAV. Bohuslav Martin (1890-1959) was a prolific Czech composer, writing many large scale works. The composer moved to Paris in 1923 where he began experimenting in a variety of composition styles. His String Trio was published in 1951. Martin himself was a violinist and many of his experiments in composing for solo instruments and small ensembles saw him write for his own instrument and for the familiar strings. String Trio is made up of two movements; 1) Allegro and 2) Poco moderato. With a typical performance lasting about 15 and a half minutes, the String Trio for Violin, Viola and Celloprovides advanced string players with an exciting, challenging and inspiring ensemble work, addressing a variety of musical features. Par PURCELL HENRY. This delightful string trio is straightforward technically, and will be fun to play for student and amateur alike. The ?Sonatas of III Parts by Henry Purcell? were first published in 1683. A facsimile of the first edition was published in 1975. This arrangement follows the facsimile faithfully, simply writing out the first violin and cello parts of the trio sonata, with the second violin part transposed down an octave in places to suit the viola. This edition follows Purcell's original text without the dynamics and bowing that later editors added.
