Composed by
Alexander Scriabin.
Arranged by Ralph Sauer.
Romantic Russian. Solo
part and piano score.

Classics (CY.CC2494).
Alexander
Scriabin's music has been
described as mystical,
lyrical and
idiosyncratic. He was a
most innovative and
controversial early
modern Russian composer.
His works were ignored
for many years until
recently and are now seen
as sincere expression(s)
of genius.
The Three
Etudes for Trombone and
Piano are early works of
Scriabin, originally
written for solo Piano.
They show lyricism,
passion, moodiness,
chromatic harmonies and
great expression.
Mr.
Sauer has once again
brought three wonderful
new works for advanced
performers who wish to
explore this area,
largely unknown to the
Trombone world. Those who
do will be richly
rewarded with the depth
of musicanship found in
these works.

I remember well
when I began to write
these pieces: I sat down
at the piano in the
conservatory, which was
almost completely empty
at the time... and I
improvised the first
chords of the first
piece. After that I wrote
the theme. The music rang
loudly in that large
auditorium and I could
hear how it echoed about
the empty corridors of
the conservatory... it
reminded me of the
overture from Charles
Gounod's Faust, as my
hands still played out
the melodies, stretching
the limits of the theme
which would become, in a
sense, the introduction
to the whole cycle. I
could feel that the story
was emerging: a story
born from within the
music. - Anton GLADKIKH ;
Hoffmanniada is a
collection of six short
pieces for trombone and
piano composed in a style
inspired by the great
Russian composers of the
twentieth century.
Sometimes melancholic and
romantic, sometimes
cheerful and virtuoso,
the writing subtlety of
Anton Gladkikh perfectly
exploits the qualities of
power and finesse of both
instruments. Fabrice

Liszt composed
the Romance oubliee
around 1844 for Piano. It
was forgotten until he
heard Violist Hermann
Ritter at the first
performance of Wagner's
Der Ring des Nibelungen
at Bayreuth. He fashioned
for Ritter a
transcription of the work
for Viola and Piano as
well as ones for the
Piano, Violin and
Violoncello. In this
short work, the listener
hears the agonies of a
troubled soul, beginning
with a rhapsodic passage,
continuing with a
cadenza-like section,
then a section with
arpeggiated figures,
finally settling into a
peaceful ending. This
4 minute work is
appropriate for advanced
performers. With Mr.
Sauer's arrangement we
now have this lovely
version for Trombone and
Piano.

French composer, Alfred
Desenclos (1912-1971)
described his music as
romantic. His music is
expressive and
atmospheric, as heard in
his Plainchant and
Allegretto for Trombone
and Piano. Desenclos
studied at the Roubaix
Conservatory and he won
the 1942 Prix de Rome.
His Plainchant and
Allegretto was published
in 1965, towards the end
of the composer's life. A
typical performance lasts
around eight minutes, in
which the Trombone solo
line is enhanced by
rhythm, and technique. As
expected, the two
movements are
contrasting, suitable for
the advanced trombonist.
For all Trombone players
seeking alternative and
challenging repertoire,
Desenclos' Plainchant and
Allegretto makes for a
riveting performance.
