Number 5, 1950 was Mark
Rothko's last painting
before the breakthrough
into his mature format.
In it the luminous color
fields of a classic
Rothko are inscribed
across the middle with
three delicate lines.
Describing this painting
and its pivotal position
in Rothko's work, Brian
O'Doherty observes:
'After this, the lines
disappear completely.' In
recent years gesture and
figuration have
disappeared from my
music. What used to be
background has emerged to
become a musical world
composed entirely of
floating color fields. In
this new world I've
changed media, moving
from the orchestra to
smaller combinations of
acoustical instruments
and
electronically-processed
sounds. I still think in
orchestral terms, but
this hybrid medium allows
me to create orchestral
textures for more
practical and readily
available ensembles.
Initially I imagined this
as a kind of monolithic
music -an entire piece as
one rich and complex
sound. Then I came to
hear it as homophonic or
heterophonic. And now -
in this musical world
that I thought was
completely free of lines
- I've come to hear a
polyphony of harmonic
clouds. Maybe the lines
never disappear
completely. Maybe
Christian Wolff was right
when he quipped: 'No
matter what we do, sooner
or later it all sounds
melodic.' - John Luther
Adams.

I was
tempted to call the piece
Throw Back because it
consciously employs
rhythmic and harmonic
approaches characteristic
of the earlier part of
the twentieth century,
much of which plays a
part in forging my
musical personality.
Going along with the
impetus, I have paid
homage by subtly
interpolating stylistic
or actual references to
such unexpected
bedfellows as Scriabin,
Ravel, Debussy, Piston,
Roussel, and Ysaye. I
hope I will be musically
forgiven. In one
continuous movement,
there are three definite
internal sections:
Presto-Largo-Allegro. The
first section opens with
a very soft percussion
cadenza. If the acoustics
allow it, the player will
use sponge pottery
mallets (sponge-headed
mallets employed to
smooth the interior of a
pot as it is being
spin-dried). No matter
how hard the
percussionist strikes the
drums, the dynamic cannot
go above pp (pianissimo).
This cadenza serves as a
basis for the first
movement. The elements of
the cadenza are taken by
the orchestra to make the
first major statement,
similar to the classical
concerto; but rather than
making a restatement, the
soloists, when they come
in, begin with
variational ideas. The
second section is given
over to the soloists, and
is lyrical. The third
section begins with an
alternation between
strict rhythmic pulsation
and free-sounding
timbres, as if reluctant
to leave the second
section behind. The
rhythmic aspect takes
over more and more as the
piece progresses toward
its conclusion. Double
Play was commissioned by
the Saint Paul Chamber
Orchestra with financial
assistance from the
Northwest Area
Foundation. It received
its premiere on January
7, 1983, in St. Paul,
with the St. Paul Chamber
Orchestra; Pinchas
Zukerman, violinist; Marc
Neikrug, piano; and the
composer conducting.

The
general inspiration for
the music was an idea of
Durham, garnered from two
or three short visits and
a reading of a short
history - so a sort of
Durham of the mind, a
stylized Durham; 'my'
Durham, if you will,
imagined into music.
However, the
defininginspiration for
the piece was the
Cathedral. My first visit
to Durham in 2001 saw me
standing open-mouthed on
Palace Green, and then in
silent awe as I walked
into that formidable
magnificence inside. Most
of the themes came from
the days immediately
following my first
experience of this
extraordinary, inspiring
building. The feeling
that the very stones and
pillars themselves are
imbued with centuries of
prayer, withpeople's joy,
grief, despair, even
anger; gratitude and
hope. As the tunes and
chords and sounds started
to organize themselves in
my mind and onto
manuscript paper, I
realized that I was
writing a sort of day in
the life of Durham, and
that the Cathedral
wouldbe its beginning,
would be in its middle,
and would be at its
ending. The piece
consists of six
'pictures' arranged into
three parts - the
morning, afternoon and
evening of this imaginary
Durham city. Jon Lord,
2017.

“Anthologies were
important during Leopold
Mozart's lifetime. All
knowledge was to be
collected and made
available, and Mozart's
'Versuch einer
gründlichen
Violinschule' (A Treatise
on the Fundamental
Principles of Violin
Playing) is also to be
regarded in this context.
My 'Florilegium' (the
Latin word for
'Anthology' –
'Blossom Collection')
follows this tradition. I
thus collected more or
less loose 'blossoms':
individual turns of
phrase and gestures from
Leopold Mozart's Violin
Treatise, as well as from
books that include the
extended techniques of
violin playing in use
today. I attempted to
organize this 'blossom
collection' – in a
double sense of word
– during the
course of the
compositional process and
to transfer them into my
own language. Ultimately
the idea was to create an
album piece that would
allow the sound of the
violin to blossom in its
various facets ...
including prickly
thorns!†(Johannes
X. Schachtner).

“I
like the idea of
exploring the dramatic,
ritualistic side of
music. In The Mirror With
Three Faces, one can look
at three different faces
or roles of the same
person or at three
distinct personalities
– each with its
own face. Each character
(i.e. instrument) may be
isolated, in conflict, or
in harmony with others
and itself. This trio
explores individuality
and ensemble, harmony and
conflict, one in three or
three in one –
that is the ambiguous
nature of this work,
structured in the form of
a triptych.†(Lera
Auerbach).

The
material for Jyrki
Linjama's
Allerheiligentag cycle is
a Finnish folk chorale
for All Saints' Day (no.
146 in the Finnish Hymn
Book). The first work in
the cycle is a string
trio (2007), the second a
piece for orchestra
(2009), and the fourth
and fifth are solo works
for viola da gamba (2018)
and Sonata for violin
solo (2019). The composer
tells: The choice of
topic and material was
originally influenced by
the place where the
string trio would be
premiered – the
old church on the island
of Seili (Själö) in
the Turku archipelago.
The bleak history of the
mental hospital on the
island invited images of
suffering and death. I
got so attached to the
fine, bleak melody that
this series of works
began to emerge.

3 Pieces
from Franz Lehar's
operetta Die Lustige
Witwe/The Merry Widow.
Arranged for Violin and
Piano by conductor Esther
Bobrova Lange. These
arrangements are based
upon the song texts of
the operetta and the
character of the music.
The famous melodies are
equally balanced between
violin and piano.
Further, I have enlarged
the arrangements with
both rhythmical and
melodious variations in
the style of Franz Lehar.
The bowing in the violin
part is written by Arne
Balk-Moeller, associate
violin professor at the
Southern Danish National
Academy of Music, who
also took into
consideration the text
and the music of the
operetta. The nuances and
articulations in both
violin and piano are
written according to the
original vocal score.
(Esther Bobrova
Lange).
