The
model for this sonata is
Mozart, specifically his
Sonata in B flat major,
K.454, written in 1784.
Eberl borrows many
structural and stylistic
features from K.454: the
grand, slow introduction
of the first movement;
the song-like second
movement opening over
rocking accompaniment;
and the gavotte-like
closing rondo. Eberl even
quotes directly from
K.454. But the work also
looks forward to
Beethoven’s
contributions to the
genre, and in its
duration, formal and
harmonic novelty, and in
the lively relationship
between the violin and
keyboard, Op.50 shares
much of the musical
ambition and quality of
Beethoven’s early
works in this genre.

When
the Newport Music
Festival commissioned me
for a piano trio in honor
of their 2021 season, I
looked for a topic that
would celebrate an aspect
of the Newport community.
While researching the
area, I was struck by the
nine lighthouses situated
around the island. The
dual nature of
lighthouses was
particularly appealing to
me: not only do they
serve a vital role in the
navigation of ships
around rocks and land,
but they are also a
beautiful sight,
particularly at night
when their blinking
beacons are clearly
visible to the eye. It
occurred to me that
lighthouses link the past
with the present, and
will endure long into the
future, with their
beacons serving the same
purpose for every
generation.I became
fascinated with the
lighthouse on the
property of Castle Hill
Inn, located at the
opening of the East
Passage of the
Narragansett Bay. This
squat thirty-four foot
granite structure was
erected in 1890 on a very
picturesque spot, right
at the water’s
edge. Its
“characteristic,â
the nautical term
for each
lighthouse’s
unique light sequence
that allows ships to
identify the lighthouse,
is to alternate on for
three seconds, then off
for three seconds. The
lighthouse has also
served as the starting
and finish line for
numerous high profile
yacht races, as well as
survived a massive
hurricane in 1938, though
the lighthouse
keeper’s nearby
residence wasn’t
so lucky. American
novelist Thornton Wilder
wrote much of his 1973
novel Theophilus North
while staying at the
Castle Hill Inn; a
passage from the book
perfectly captures the
dual nature of
lighthouses:“At a
later visit I was able to
engage the pentagonal
room in a turret above
the house; from that
magical room I could see
at night the beacons of
six lighthouses and hear
the booming and chiming
of as many sea
buoys.â€In Beacon of
the Bay, we first hear
the lighthouse’s
characteristic as its
ruby light blinks on and
off. This is followed by
a simple theme that
represents the lighthouse
performing its solitary
duty. As the piece
progresses, we hear waves
playfully lapping around
its base, then yachts
gracefully floating by;
this is followed by a
violent storm that churns
the waves with so much
force that they crash
against the
lighthouse’s
granite body. But the
steadfast lighthouse
holds firm to the rocks,
grandly blinking its ruby
light. The music quiets
back down to its simple
theme, with yachts
sailing by once more as
the piece concludes.

The F major sonata is the
last and the most
developed of all the
works Sibelius wrote
during his youth for his
own instrument, the
violin. It was completed
in the summer of 1889 in
Loviisa and premiered
there the same year at a
charity gala. During his
youth Sibelius looked to
the music of Grieg, which
is clearly to be heard in
this work - not only in
the melodies or harmonies
but also in the formal
structure, which is more
romantically oriented
than that of many early
works from Sibelius's
youth, which are more
closely tied to the
classical tradition. In
the andante Sibelius
introduces aspects of
folk music for the first
time, thereby
anticipating the Finnish
stamp of many of his
pieces from the
1890's.

The
Concerto for Violin
and Orchestra Op.103
was written in 1958 and
is yet another superb
orchestral work by Edmund
Rubbra. Typically, this
is a work that calls more
on musicality than on
virtuosity, although
Rubbra knewthe violin
well for having long
partnered his wife and
for having long played in
a trio with William
Pleeth. Rubbra's
familiarity with the
instrument certainly
helped him avoiding
technical
‘tricks’ and
concentrating his
creativeenergies more on
an inward-looking solo
part than an
outward-dashing virtuosic
one!
This is an

Violin with Piano
Accompaniment. The solo
violin part is also
included on a separate

Bruch's
evergreen for the first
time in Urtext Thanks to
the premiere performance
by Joseph Joachim and to
the release of the
printed edition in 1868,
Max Bruch's Violin
Concerto no. 1 zipped
onto the road to success
and has never left it
since. Yet from the
preface of the
BreitkopfUrtext
edition,one can infer how
things looked like behind
the dazzling facade.
After the world premiere,
the composer struggled
for the definitive form.
He wrote 3, 4 development
sections in the finale,
and sought the advice of
celebrated virtuosi such
as Joseph Joachim and
Ferdinand David to revise
the solo part. And after
all this was done (see
above), Bruch suffered
under the work's
popularity: Have I
written nothing but this
one concerto? The new
Urtext edition is based
primarily on the first
edition. Next to the main
source and the autograph,
what is supremely
interesting is a solo
part with entries by
Joachim and Bruch. It
confirms how intensively
the two men collaborated
on honing the final form
of the work.
