1001 Nights in the Harem. Par SAY FAZIL. 'My Violin Concerto consists of four movements whose inspiration is loosely connected with Scheherazade’s One Thousand and One Nights. The first movement is set inside the harem; a variety of women from the harem are introduced, each with her own different personality. The second movement is a frenzy of dance – in effect a party night with an abundance of different types of dance music. The third movement depicts the next morning and consists primarily of variations on a well-known Turkish song. The fourth movement begins dramatically, but develops during the course of the movement more and more into a reminiscence of all the previous events and the work culminates dreamily in a happy mood with sensuous oriental sounds.
As appropriate for an oriental soundscape, the orchestra includes a series of Turkish percussion instruments such as a kudüm or bendir, but also glockenspiel, marimba und vibraphone, celesta and harp. It is however the solo violin which tells the story and also accompanies the listener through the entire work. The violin part is highly virtuoso and unites the four movements into an intensely atmospheric whole in which the solo violin soars off into a solo cadenza between each movement, sometimes accompanied by one of the percussion instruments.
As is customary, the present piano reduction is initially intended as an aid for the study of this work, but during my tour programmes with Patricia Kopatchinskaya and Burhan Öçal we have utilised this material to create a trio version for violin, piano and percussion.' Par ADES THOMAS. Thomas Adès?s Violin Concerto ?Concentric Paths?, written in 2005, is one of the most important additions to the violin concerto repertoire since Ligeti?s. Cast in three contrasting movements ? each linked by a preoccupation with circling musical figures ? the concerto, subtitled ?Concentric Paths? now occupies a place in standard repertoire. Two lithe, rhythmically driven movements ? Rings and Rounds ? bookend Paths, an intensely emotional and gritty exploration of passacaglia-like sequences, which peaks in a lyrical outpouring of exceptional beauty. ?In just 20 minutes, this three-movement piece does something magical. The way it swirls ethereally in the first movement, exerts a tragic and vice-like grip in the chaconne-like second part and finally propels you into the uninhibited flight of the finale is like being spun into an infinite space.? Par TCHAIKOVSKI PIOTR ILITCH. Souvenir d'un Lieu Cher (Memories of a Dear Place)...(+)
Par TCHAIKOVSKI PIOTR ILITCH. Souvenir d'un Lieu Cher (Memories of a Dear Place) is a collection of three pieces for violin and piano. The first - Méditation - was written in Clarens in Switzerland in March 1878. Tchaikovsky originally intended it to be the slow movement of his violin concerto, but later replaced it with the more substantial Canzonetta and recast it for violin and piano. The other two movements were composed in May of the same year on the estate of his benefactress, Nadeja von Meck at Brailovo in Ukraine which is the 'dear place' of the title. It was published in in May 1879. The work is very characteristic of Tchaikovsky's style. It is built on beautiful melodies, with a Russian folk inflection, and contains a variety of contrasting sections. The outer movements are written in a gentle lyrical style, whereas the scherzo is fast and furious creating a mood of stormy anger. The trio section is based on a simple melody with a tinge of sadness about it. The solo part exemplifies Tchaikovsky's mastery of violin writing, using as it does a wide range of timbres and effects.

Par SCHLEE THOMAS DANIEL. A suite whose movements always deliver something other than what they seem to promise. But throughout, the two instruments and respectively their players act like two people in very specific situations:
I.: The opening movement is reserved for the piano; the initially earnest, solitary cantilena intensifies creating expectation. Suddenly
II.: the violin sounds. Its moving figures replace the now silent piano, also soloistically.
III. 'Passacaglia': The title is taken literally - the two instruments/persons encounter each other in the street. Two musical characters who meet at a specific point, recognize each other, but move on again, each one by itself.
IV. 'Rondo': The two of them dance together. Before me, I saw people dancing the Sardana - a round dance - in front of the cathedral of Barcelona. Four themes in different time signatures circle ceaselessly between the two instruments.
V. 'Fuga': At last, regardless, panic flight - again the title is taken literally ... Human, only too human .../ Répertoire / Violon et Piano

Par HUMMEL BERTOLD. As an educational and recital piece, Bertold Hummel's Sonatina Op. 35, composed in 1969, has accompanied many a young musician following his or her own path. Having sold a thousand times all over the world, it is one of the composer's best-known works and has been included in the repertoire list for the 'Jugend musiziert' competition by the German Music Council. The three movements are characterized by warmth and exciting rhythms: in the powerful Maestoso, the sonority of the main theme is contrasted with a lyrical side theme - the recapitulation ends with an impulsive Fugato. The second movement Elegie consists of a single soulful melody over spherical harmonies of the piano. As a highlight, playful ease, marching rhythms and dramatic intensifications alternate in quick succession in the Finale vivace, followed by wild arpeggios that conclude the piece.
Originally composed for violin, versions for viola and violoncello were already commonly used. To mark its 50th birthday, Simrock / Boosey and Hawkes present the work in a revised, newly set edition. Written in the 1990s by the composer himself and now available for the first time, the versions for alto and tenor saxophone are valuable additions to the repertoire for beginning instrumentalists./ Répertoire / Violon et Piano

Par HEINIO MIKKO. Mikko Heiniö's Alla madre (2007) abandons the traditional virtuoso concerto concept: here a large orchestra engages in dialogue with a solo violin. The first movement is called Arrivo, ?Arrival?: the soloist literally arrives later, and by degrees, playing his/her first two solos offstage. Even then the orchestra continues to take the initiative for a long time. Not until the second movement, entitled Aura, ?Air or Wind?, does the initiative pass to the solo violin as it sets light to notes in the orchestra harmony like individual lamps. And not until the end of the second movement and the beginning of the third does the solo violin play completely on its own. The title of the first movement, ?Arrival?, underlines the event, the dramaturgy, whereas that of the second movement, ?Aura?, alludes to the texture and the shimmering space. The third movement is the most strongly emotional, as the name Carezza, ?Caress? suggests. This product includes the solo part and the piano reduction (B4 sized). The orchestral material is available from the publisher. The orchestration: 3(III picc)3(III ca)3(III=bcl)3(III=cfg)-4331-13-hp-str / Date parution : 2023-01-24/ Répertoire / Violon et Piano

Par DAVIS OLIVER. 'For many years the violinist Kerenza Peacock and I have been discussing the concept of a piece about trees. One day I received in the post from her a book by Annie Davidson entitled, ‘How to be More Tree’. This brilliant book became the inspiration for the Arboretum Suite. The first tree I decided to write about was Aspen. I read that Aspen trees work together sharing water and nutrients through their root system, so only as a community can they grow in strength. Aspen is followed by Açai Palm, a tree which is native to Brazil and Argentina, hence the Latin American feel of this movement. The score is marked pizzicato, the plucked sound further accentuating the South American rhythms. The Vanishing Mahogany of the Amazon naturally has a very sombre feel, although the major key ending of this movement reflects the hope that we may still manage to save the rain forests. The last movement describes my response to the description of the Mountain Hemlock. I wanted to create rhythms that depicted this beautiful tree swaying in the mountain winds.' - Oliver Davis / Date parution : 2022-06-08/ Répertoire / Violon et Piano

I wrote the first movement of my Sommersonate in the summer of 2010, and though a self-contained work, it called out for continuation or a companion piece. I imagine the first movement, marked moderato, to be bright, free, weightless, transparent, flooded in sunlight. In contrast, the newly composed second movement is nocturnal and cryptic, with a restrained glow. A Romance, a (summer) night piece. Jörg Widmann / Violon Et Piano

Einstein was a violinist all his life. In the motion picture Einstein's Light, filmmaker Nickolas Barris and composer Bruce Adolphe set out to communicate Einstein's dedication to the violin and his particular love for the music of Mozart and Bach. This collection of music composed for the soundtrack is based on phrases from those two great masters that spin off into physics-inspired dreams and thoughts. It contains a poignant solo violin piece based on music by Bach and four pieces for violin and piano that are based on phrases from Mozart's music. The composer includes one work in particular, the Mozart Violin Sonata #34, notable because the only extant recording of Einstein playing the violin contains the slow movement from this sonata. The soundtrack to Einstein's Light was recorded by Joshua Bell and Marija Stroke on Sony Classical Records. This edition contains bowings and fingerings by Joshua Bell. Movement Titles: 1. Einstein's Light: Theme (1:44 ) 2. Struggle and Breakthrough (4:34) 3. Einstein's Sarabande: The Loneliness of Genius (4:03) 4. Bending of Space-Time (3:03) 5. Masterworks for Violin Series for Violin and Piano. Par PAGANINI NICCOLO. Contains La Campanella, Op.7 and Moto Perpetuo, Op.11. Niccolò Paganini gave the premiere performance of his Second Violin Concerto at La Scala in Milan, 1827. The success of the performance was such that the last movement of the concerto was repeated. The subtitle of this movement is \'La Campanella\' (The little bell) because of the sound the harmonics in this work produce. Paganini known for his pyrotechnics uses double harmonics and left hand pizzicato lavishly in this movement. Moto Perpetuo is one of Paganini\'s most popular works. Dozens of transcriptions exist for a variety of instruments, from marimba to double bass, as well as for orchestra, where all first violins play the solo part. The 3,032 sixteenth notes in this four-minute composition require formidable skill and endurance from the performer. / Date parution : 2022-01-14/ Recueil / Violin et Piano

Johannes Brahms:The Works for one Instrument and PianoJohannes Brahms' compositi...(+)
Johannes Brahms:The Works for one Instrument and PianoJohannes Brahms' compositions for one instrument and piano have been standards in chamber music literature ever since their inception. These works were written with specific performers in mind and Brahms worked closely with them when refining the final texts. Nevertheless, we rarely approach the music taking into consideration the possibilities of the instruments for which Brahms wrote or the performing practices of the individual players who first performed these compositions, including Brahms himself. The New Urtext EditionsBärenreiter's pioneering new scholarly-critical editions of Brahms' works for one instrument and piano are edited by a team of musicologists who are also performers. They offer today's musicians not just a reliable musical text based on all known sources, but also a comprehensive approach to the works, which aims to place them in their historical context and to elucidate the complex of meanings that the composer wished his notation to convey to performers. In addition to the musical text these editions offer an informative Introduction laying out the genesis, publication history and reception of the works. At the same time there is a complete list of the sources, an explanation of the editorial procedures and a Critical Commentary. Also, each volume contains a detailed discussion of specific performing practice issues raised by individual works. An integral part of Bärenreiter's Brahms publication complex is a text booklet which approaches general performance practice issues of the 19th century with regard to e.g. tempo, rubato, rhythmic flexibility and articulation. Furthermore musicians will find valuable information concerning vibrato, portamento and bowing. Last but not least characteristics of Brahms' own piano playing as well as that of his circle and contemporaries are discussed. The violin and viola sonata editions come not only with an Urtext part freed from all editorial emendations, but also with an additional part including fingering and bowing based on the practices of Joseph Joachim and his colleagues. These markings especially draw on publications of the sonatas edited by Joachim's pupils Leopold Auer and Ossip Schnirlin as well as those by Brahms' associate Franz Kneisel. A similar approach has been used for the violoncello sonatas, drawing on performance markings by Robert Hausmann (for whom Brahms wrote the Sonata in F major), Hugo Becker, with whom Brahms performed it, and Julius Klengel who was also close to his circle.Bärenreiter's new Brahms complex also importantly brings two neglected works back into the player's hands, namely the splendid versions of the op. 120 sonatas, originally written for viola or clarinet and piano. Brahms' arrangements for violin and piano unaccountably disappeared from the standard repertoire early in the 20th century. In these versions Brahms did not simply adjust the solo part for the violin, he made many alterations to the piano part, casting thought-provoking light on the clarinet and viola versions.- A pioneering set of Urtext editions- String editions include an Urtext solo part and a second part with fingering as well as performance markings- Each edition offers a preface on performance practice aspects pertaining to the respective works- A separate text booklet includes pioneering texts on general issues of performance practice in the 19th century as well as on specific issues with regard to Johannes Brahms' chamber music / Violon Et Piano

Composer and conductor Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) was a pupil of Henri Büsser and Henri Rabaud at the Conservatoire de Paris, and received the first Prix de Rome in 1934. It was during his stay the Villa Medici that he wrote his Aria Pour Saxophone Alto Et Piano - an adaptation of the third movement of Johan Sebastian Bach's Organ Pastorale in F Major BWV 590, which was to tour the world. This nostalgia-imbued melody, which expands over a regular meter, has, in turn, been the subject of numerous transcriptions, first for clarinet, then for Violin (or Flute) and Piano. Editions Leduc have chosen to republish this last version, with the added bonus of an audio version that should be of valuable assistance to all musicians! / Violon, Flûte Et Piano

First ever publication based on the autographOriginally written for violin and orchestra between 1873 and 1877, Dvorák's 'Romance? immediately followed his String Quartet in F minor (1873) and draws on the theme from its slow movement. He probably wrote the 'Romance? for his friend, the violin virtuoso Franti?ek Ondrícek, who later premiered Dvorák's Violin Concerto in 1883.Our edition is the first to avail itself of the recently rediscovered autograph of Dvorák's own version for violin and piano. Compared to the well-known piano reductions, it differs from the orchestral version in several important respects and is also one bar shorter. Our new edition, containing the composer's more authentic version, can nevertheless also serve as a piano reduction to the orchestral version.- First edition of the piano version based on Dvorák's autograph- Foreword by David R.
