In 1979,
Martin produced a set of
three quintets, in
consideration of Gorky's
piece Nighttime Enigma
Nostalgia. Each is scored
for flute, clarinet,
violin, cello, and piano.
As the title suggests,
the music is in a state
of perpetual questioning
using a variety of
approaches. For example,
Enigma opens using
ostinati (plural of
ostinato) that do not
match in length, like a
staircase with each step
a different height.
Additionally, the music
has sudden starts and
stops, again unexplained.
There are dramatic and
powerful explosive
passages that are
interrupted. The
technique, used to create
this feeling of a
perplexed music world
where things seem often
not to make sense and to
be left unresolved, is
called in poetry and
literature, anticlimax.
In Enigma, the music
suggests one direction;
then refuses to continue,
striking out in another
direction. Artists use
approaches such as this
to force themselves into
creative circumstances
that they otherwise might
not have discovered.

notes.).

“I
belong to that group of
people who appropriate
Debussy's wonderfully
formulated philosophy
according to which music
begins where words end.
Contrary to a view that
has become widespread
during the past 100
years, I am convinced
that the task of the
composer is to write
music, not to talk about
it. Even if my technical
and aesthetic
commentaries on one of my
compositions were to have
a certain value for
listeners, such a
commentary would have the
effect that I were more
or less forcing my own
vision of the work onto
the listener. The power
of music is, however, a
gift that makes it
capable of calling forth
different reactions in
listeners. I shall
therefore limit myself to
saying that the
'Imaginary Variations'
were inspired by the
wonderful recordings of
Janet Packer that I
listened to with the
greatest pleasure prior
to the beginning of my
work. The title is
derived from the fact
that this composition is
structured similarly to
the classical variation
form and that the
audience can listen to
the constant changes of
the musical ideas. In
truth, however, the
twelve short sections of
the work are not true
variations even though
they reveal some
connections and
similarities.â€

As an
educational and recital
piece, Bertold Hummel's
Sonatina Op. 35, composed
in 1969, has accompanied
many a young musician
following his or her own
path. Having sold a
thousand times all over
the world, it is one of
the composer's best-known
works and hasbeen
included in the
repertoire list for the
'Jugend musiziert'
competition by the German
Music Council. The three
movements are
characterized by warmth
and exciting rhythms: in
the powerful Maestoso,
the sonority of the main
theme is contrasted with
a lyrical side theme; the
recapitulation ends with
an impulsive Fugato. The
second movement Elegie
consists of a single
soulful melody over
spherical harmonies of
the piano. As a
highlight, playful ease,
marching rhythms and
dramatic intensifications
alternate in quick
succession in the Finale
vivace, followed by wild
arpeggios that conclude
the piece. Originally
composed for violin,
versions for viola and
violoncello were already
commonly used. To mark
its 50th birthday,
Simrock / Boosey &
Hawkes present the work
in a revised, newly set
edition. Written in the
1990s by the composer
himself and now available
forthe first time, the
versions for alto and
tenor saxophone are
valuable additions to the
repertoire for beginning
instrumentalists.

For
violin and piano The
composer writes: The
structure is a short set
of double variations, the
two themes following a
short introduction. One
is flamboyant and
rhetorical, the other
gentle and lyrical. The
first develops
rhythmically, through a
toccata to a vigorous
dance, the second becomes
increasingly decorated so
that the line is almost
dissolved, but finally
emerges in its clearest,
simplest form. In a coda
each musical character
disappears into
silence.

The
Concertino op. 12
by the German violinist,
composer and violin
educator Ferdinand
Küchler (1867-1937) is
a three-movement work
that is ideal for the
development of playing in
first and third position.
The first movement is
both powerful and playful
in character, and its
themes that follow on
from each other rapidly,
producing a concise
sonata form. The second
movement has been written
in a three-part song form
(A-B-A). The A section
has a cantabile
atmosphere, whereas
section B is more
dramatic. The third
movement is a rondo (with
a refrain and episodes).
The refrain is joyful in
spirit, and the episodes
present
variation.
