Uuno
Klami probably began
composing the Sonata in C
Minor for Violin and
Piano as early as May
1920. He completed two
movements but only
sketched the finale. The
reason why he never
finished it may be that
he began composing a
Viola Sonata at around
the same time. In 2016,
composer Eero Kesti was
editing Klami's Viola
Sonata when ne noticed
that the main section,
Allegro affetta, in its
finale is fully based on
the sketches for the
finale of the Violin
Sonata. He concluded that
the finales of the two
works were presumably
meant to be very similar,
even though they were in
different keys. He
therefore constructed the
last movement of the
Violin Sonata, basing it
entirely on the last
movement of the Viola
Sonata. This, we believe,
is what Klami originally
intended.
