Mendelssohn's
Violin Concerto op. 64,
is a key work of the 19th
century, adhering to the
classical style of
Beethoven while pointing
the way to the romantic
ethos of Brahms. It has
long been known that
Mendelssohn performed the
work with three soloists
in succession: Ferdinand
David, who worked closely
with the composer during
its composition and
played it at the
premiere; the 'child
prodigy' Joseph Joachim;
and Hubert Leonard, a
young Belgian virtuoso
about whom little is
known.
As proof
sheets for the Violin
Concerto in E minor were
long considered lost, it
could be described as
somewhat of a sensation
when proofs for the solo
violin part resurfaced
together with a letter
from Mendelssohn to
Leonard.
The
letter informs us that
the composer invited
Leonard to his home in
Frankfurt in order to
make his acquaintance. It
was already known that
Mendelssohn had given
proof sheets to David;
now we know that he also
gave some to
Leonard.
The
recently discovered
proofs reveal how Leonard
played the concerto with
Mendelssohn on that
memorable evening in
February 1845. Besides
containing bowing marks
and fingering, they also
show how Leonard executed
shifts of position and
where he employed open
strings. Furthermore
modifications made to
dynamic markings and
additional legato bowing
are shown.
It is
safe to assume that all
of this was done with
Mendelssohn's approval.
That the young violinist
made a positive
impression on the
composer is confirmed in
the latter's
correspondence following
their joint performance.
Mendelssohn is full of
praise for Leonard's
playing and offers to
lend his support in
finding employment in
Germany.
This
revised edition of the
Mendelssohn Violin
Concerto (only the
orchestral parts remain
unchanged) includes a
separate booklet on
performance practice.
The editor, Clive
Brown, is an acknowledged
expert on Romantic
performance
practice.

Swing-style
music for violin lessons?
A delightful idea in
itself, but suitable

to the violin part, this
edition includes an
easy-to-play piano
accompaniment: and on top
of this, MP3 recordings
of both demo performances
and backing tracks are
available online.
Little Swingies
will add new momentum to
violin lessons and
performances
alike.

Kale
vi Aho (b. 1949) composed
Violin concerto No. 2 in
late summer and early
autumn 2015 for the
Finnish violinist Elina
Vahala. Lasting about 32
minutes, the second
concerto is a large-scale
virtuoso work dominated
by the soloist. The
strong-featured first
movement (Allegro) begins
with a fairly short
orchestral introduction
that is followed by the
soloist's first vigorous
statement. Around the
middle of the movement is
a cadenza, and the
movement ends with a
quick stretta. The
soloist dominates the
events in the slow second
movement (Adagio) even
more than it did in the
first. The Adagio begins
with the same opening
motif for the soloist as
the first movement, but
this time the motif is
more lyrical and singing.
Having built up to a
dramatic climax, it
subsides on flageolet
notes and finally sounds
that are somewhere
between musical notes and
noise. The third movement
(Vivace, leggiero) is by
nature dance-like again
and lighter than the
previous ones. At the
end, the tempo
accelerates to a wild,
virtuosic prestissimo.

Five Pieces
for Violin and Orchestra
was commissioned by
Frederick Grinke and
completed on 20 December
1961. The BBC Symphony
Orchestra with Frederick
Grinke (violin) and
conducted by the
composer, gave the first
performance on 31 July
1962 at the Royal Albert
Hall, London during the
BBC Proms season. This
work is so constructed
that each piece is
complete in itself and
can be played separately,
while at the same time
the whole set of five
constitutes a structural
unit. A basic motif
consisting of a rising
semitone followed by a
falling tone, and its
inversion plays an
important part in every
piece. Thus the first
piece, which is of a slow
and meditative character,
begins with this theme in
the bass. It is also
heard in the first entry
of the solo part, and
thereafter every episode
is in some way derived
from it. The next piece,
a vigorous and strongly
marked 'allegro', uses
the semitone of the
original figure as its
starting point. A second
theme appears, first on
the horns and is later
taken up by the solo
violin, while a third
section has the initial
idea as its
accompaniment. Next comes
an extended scherzo in
free form very closely
based on initial motif.
The fourth is a purely
melodic piece containing
allusions in its middle
section to the basic
figure. Here the strings
only are used for
accompaniment. In the
first section, violas and
cellos are divided in the
middle section, and all
the strings are used in
the last, which is
otherwise an almost exact
repetition of the
opening. The Finale is a
lighter movement than the
others, concerned mainly
with giving the soloist
material for display, but
not unconnected with what
has gone before.

A
suite whose movements
always deliver something
other than what they seem
to promise. But
throughout, the two
instruments and
respectively their
players act like two
people in very specific
situations:
I.:
The opening movement is
reserved for the piano;
the initially earnest,
solitary cantilena
intensifies creating
expectation.
Suddenly II.: the
violin sounds. Its moving
figures replace the now
silent piano, also
soloistically. III.

characters who meet at a

each other, but move on
again, each one by

„Rondo“: The
two of them dance
together. Before me, I
saw people dancing the
Sardana – a round
dance – in front
of the cathedral of
Barcelona. Four themes in
different time signatures
circle ceaselessly
between the two
instruments. V.

I
became interested in the
work of Plato through my
friend and collaborator,
the writer and
philosopher Paul
Woodruff. Paul's new
translation, with
Alexander Nehamas, of the
Symposium gave me
insights into ancient
Greek ways of thinking
about Love, Beauty, and
Wisdom -- and managed to
keep the earthy, and
often bawdy side of it
all in full view. But
their new translation of
Plato's later dialogue
Phaedrus went even
further: the beauty of
the speeches is
breathtaking, and the
discourse itself is
enough to keep one awake
at night. Basically the
Great Speech of Socrates
in the Phaedrus dialogue
has to do with the place
of Eros in the world, and
with the conflict in the
soul between fleshly
pleasure and philosophic
discovery. I will not
attempt to encapsulate
this brilliant discourse
in a program note:
suffice it to say that
reading it gave rise to
my two-sided work for
clarinet, violin, and
piano, Phaedrus. The
first movement represents
the Philosophic life, and
is thus subtitled
Apollo's Lyre (Invocation
and Hymn). It begins with
an unaccompanied melody
for the clarinet, which
(after a pair of
harp-like flourishes for
the piano, expands into
an accompanied canon. The
voices in the dialogue
(clarinet and violin)
follow each other by a
prescribed number of
beats, but the music is
totally devoid of any
meter at all. The piano,
representing the lyre,
accompanies this lyric
love-feast with repeated
strummed chords. The
canon has three large
sections, and ends with
violin echoing the
unaccompanied clarinet
invocation as the sound
of the lyre fades. The
second movement, called
Dionysus' Dream-Orgy
(Ritual Dance) presents,
after a brief
introduction, another
kind of unmetered music.
Rather than long lyric
flights of philosophic
song, however, this time
we hear a unison dance of
unbridled energy and
sensual transport. The
piece soon forms itself
into a loose arch form,
with contrasting metered
dance sections divided by
the unison unmetered orgy
tune. Midway through the
movement, Apollo's melody
returns from the first
movement, but it is a
temporary reminiscence.
The orgiastic dance
returns, reaches a
climax, and ends with a
stomping of feet. While
Plato asserts that a
proper balance between
lust and reason is
necessary in all men, he
(naturally) gives the nod
to Philosophy as the
better choice in which to
live. Not so in my music:
the two sides are meant
to coexist and to
complement each other. No
sides are taken. Phaedrus
was commissioned of the
Verdehr Trio by Michigan
State University. It is
dedicated to the Vedehr
Trio with great affection
and admiration.

the Wurzburg court
musician and violin
soloist Joseph Kuffner
(1776-1856) had to deal
with military music for
professional reasons, he
had also written a series

the field of chamber

compose potpourris on
popular opera melodies.

I wrote the
first movement of my
Sommersonate in the
summer of 2010, and
though a self-contained
work, it called out for
continuation or a
companion piece. I
imagine the first
movement, marked
moderato, to be bright,
free, weightless,
transparent, flooded in
sunlight. In contrast,
the newly composed second
movement is nocturnal and
cryptic, with a
restrained glow. A
Romance, a (summer) night

Cyril Scott
(1879 - 1970) composed
Deux Preludes in 1912.
Includes: I. Poeme
erotique and II. Danse.
In the first of two
Preludes, Poeme Erotique,
the continually changing
time signatures are the
defining factor,
displacing the bar
accents between a rocking
three and a rhapsodic
five-quaver meter. The
Danse that follows relies
even more on the rhythmic
acuity of its
interpreters through an
unfolding sucession of
unusual meter changes.
These two pieces will
appeal to an advanced
player wishing to enrich
his repertoire with
superb effective
performance pieces.
Schott's exemplary
printing on buff-colored
paper with
slightly-larger-than-usua
l notation should serve
to bring the unjustly
neglected Scott back into
the violin-repertoire
fold.--Strings

Othe
r Finnish works for
violin contains twelve
pieces for violin and
piano. Though brief in
duration, most of them
were written for concert
use, being rich and
expressive and, in some
cases, technically quite
demanding. Others are
delightful salon pieces.
This volume was compiled
by violinist Mirka Malmi
and edited by her with
pianist Tiina Karakorpi.
Many of the women of
Finnish origin who wrote
music in the 19th and
early 20th century were
cosmopolitan by nature.
They studied and found
employment in the
cultural metropolises of
central Europe. Because
of their gender, they
generally had no
opportunities for
employment in national
cultural institutions in
Finland. Their music was
mainly published outside
Finland, and in most
cases they enjoyed a
broad network of
connections, an expansive
cultural sphere and a
successful career.

The
Pytheas Center for
Contemporary Music notes:
Talma was the first woman
to receive two
Guggenheims, the first
woman elected to the
National Institute of
Arts and Letters (1974),
the first American woman
to have a full-scale
opera performed in
Germany, the first
American to teach at
Fontainebleau, and the
first woman to receive
the Sibelius Medal for
composition. This is only
the highlights of a long
life of composing. Talma
spent a good amount of
time at the MacDowell
Colony, where she wrote
many of her finest works,
including the Violin
Sonata. Having studied
composition with Nadia
Boulanger over 17 summers
in her youth, Talma
dedicated the Sonata to
her former teacher and
long-time friend on the
occasion of Boulanger's
75th birthday. The single
movement reflects Talma's
style in 1962, with more
than a passing nod to
12-tone construction. For
advanced performers.

“Maur
ice Hauchard (1870-1957)
was a French violinist
and composer. As a minor
composer, often in the
shadow of his
contemporary, Maurice
Ravel, much of Hauchard's
music is not widely
known. However, his First
Concert Solo for Violin
and Piano provides
excellent preparation for
the classical concertos.
As an excellent,
versatile musician
Hauchard loved his art
and remains one of the
greatest contributors to
music education. First
Concert Solo is part of a
series of modern concert
solos for the Violin,
intended for young
violinists. The First
Concert Solo</strong
is Allegro in tempo and
makes use of a variety of
techniques. All
violinists seeking to
play the large concertos
of the repertoire should
play this delightful
Hauchard work to ensure
progression.&rdquo.
