Cesar Franck's Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the violin repertoire, a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe.Franck's friend, the cellist Jules Desart, was so impressed when he heard the Violin Sonata performed at the Société nationale de musique in Paris that he adapted the work for his instrument. This arrangement was first published in 1887 by inserting the cello part into the piano score of the original edition. For this purpose the piano score had received a new cover and the publisher had expanded the title of the composition to 'Sonate pour piano et violon ou violoncelle?. This version by the cellist Jules Delsart for piano and violoncello is the only arrangement of the work authorized by the composer and its first edition represents the main source for Bärenreiter's new scholarly-critical publication.Bärenreiter's new edition also includes a separate movement, 'Mélancolie?, first published after Franck's death in 1911, again for the same instrumentation, piano and violin or violoncello. This short piece is based on a solfège exercise and was written at the height of the composer's creative powers, at about the same time as his famous violin sonata. The edition is rounded off by an informative text on the genesis and reception history of the two compositions (Ger/Fr/Eng), a complete list of sources, editorial notes and a Critical Commentary (Eng).- Pioneering new Urtext edition- Informative text on the genesis and reception history of the two compositions (Ger/Fr/Eng)- Detailed Critical Commentary (Eng) / Violoncelle Et Piano

The first three movements of Johannes Brahms' E minor Cello Sonata were composed...(+)
The first three movements of Johannes Brahms' E minor Cello Sonata were composed in 1862, the last movement was written in 1865. During the first years of its performance the work was received with mixed enthusiasm. By the end of Brahms' life, however, it was widely performed and by the first decades of the 20th century it was firmly embedded in the repertoire of many distinguished cellists. It was notably Robert Hausmann's advocacy of the work which seems to have contributed greatly to its promotion.Of particular value to the editors were the three early performance editions of the Cello Sonata op. 38 by Cornelius van Vliet and Edwin Hughes, Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg, as well as Julius Klengel. The cellists' van Vliet, Becker and Klengel's fingering and bowing allows for a better understanding of their performance practice. As such, the Bärenreiter edition comes with a cello part marked with fingering and bowing by the editors which are based on the practices of Brahms' contemporaries. We also provide an unmarked urtext part.An important part of this edition is the extensive preface. Firstly it informs about the works' origins, early performances, its publication as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is the unique Performance Practice Commentary. Here the editors take the premise that already a few decades after Brahms' death a widening gulf developed between the composer's expectations and the performance practices of the early 20th century. In a very concrete and practical way, the editors summarize some of the key issues in understanding Brahms' notation with regard to rhythm and timing, dynamics and accentuation, dots and strokes, slurring and non legato, piano pedalling and overholding, piano arpeggiation and dislocation, string instrument fingering, string instrument harmonics and vibrato. In this way, the edition offers an exciting and often surprising insight in Romantic musical interpretation.- A pioneering Urtext edition- With an unmarked Urtext part- With a second part including fingering and bowing based on the practices of contemporaries of Brahms- With an extensive Performance Practice Commentary- For further information on Romantic performance practice we recommend: ?Performance Practices in Johannes Brahms' Chamber Music', text booklet BA 9600 / Violoncelle Et Piano

Brahms completed his Cello Sonata op. 99 during the productive summer of 1886. The first public performance took place in Vienna on 24 November of the same year. Robert Hausmann played the cello part and the composer himself was his partner at the piano. Even though the work was generally received positively, it took some years until it was fully appreciated and gained its irrevocable place in the cello repertoire.Of particular value to the editors were the two early performance editions of the Cello Sonata op. 99 by Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg, as well as by Julius Klengel. Both cellists, Becker and Klengel, had a connection to Brahms who very much admired and trusted Becker's playing and who performed together with Klengel. This edition not only incorporates Becker's and Klengel's performance markings but also Hausmann's for whom the piece was written. As such, the Barenreiter edition comes with a cello part marked with fingering and bowing by the editors which are based on the practices of Brahms' contemporaries. Famous in his day, the Austrian composer and pianist Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) studied with Mozart and befriended Beethoven.Among his many works is a relatively late sonata for violoncello and piano composed in 1824 and published in 1826 - a delightful early Romantic piece in three movements supported by a capricious piano part. The expressive cello cantilena in the 'Romance? will capture the heart of every cellist. Our edition, edited by Mark Kroll, is the first scholarly-critical publication of this sonata. It is based on the first edition of 1826 and the autograph manuscript, which served as a master copy for the engraving.A comparison of the sources brought to light a number of details overlooked in the first edition, especially with regard to dynamics.- A must for all cellists and lovers of chamber music- Notes on performance practice in the Foreword (Ger/Eng)- Detailed Critical Commentary (Eng) / Violoncelle Et Piano

Par FAURE GABRIEL. Immediately after finishing his second Violin Sonata op. 108, Fauré started work on a sonata for Cello and Piano in early 1917, thus realising a long-conceived plan. In their predisposition and attitude, both works are very closely related. In the Cello sonata, a sombre, dramatic opening movement is also followed by a calm, relaxed slow middle movement and a graceful finale. The critical response to the first performances was subdued, but on account of increasing interest in Fauré ’s complete late chamber music, this sonata has recently been rediscovered as a substantial part of his oeuvre. The Henle Urtext edition constitutes the first criticaledition of this work. David Geringas, a master of his craft, supplied the markings in the Cello part. / Kolb, Fabian / Répertoire / Violoncelle et Piano

Unlike some of his other late works, Franck's Violin Sonata (HN 293), composed in 1886, was well-received by the public and critics from the very start. The beautiful arrangement for cello published in January 1888 distinguishes itself from the numerous other arrangements in that Franck expressly authorised it. The cellist Jules Delsart, who had heard a performance of the sonata in Paris in December 1887, was so delighted by it that he asked Franck's permission to make a transcription of the violin part for his own instrument. Delsart remained close to the original- he left the piano part unaltered and transposed the violin part only where necessary and appropriate into the lower register. / Violon

It is impossible to imagine today's cello lessons without the works by Jean-Baptiste Bréval (1753-1823).This sonata is the first of the Six Sonates non difficiles pour le violoncelle Op. 40 (1795). To this day it remains popular among cello teachers and pupils alike. Because of its comfortable tonality and technical simplicity, it is an interesting classical sonata for cello students who are experienced in playing in first position and do not shy away from occasional excursions into other positions. As a performance piece, the sonata can be accompanied either by a second cello, as in Bréval's original version, by piano, or even by both instruments. The sonata is particularly suitable for music lessons and concertos in the popular version for violoncello and piano by Joachim Stutschewsky, which was revised for the Schott Student Edition by Rainer Mohrs and edited and prefaced by Beverly Ellis. The new Schott Student Edition series offers varied literature at five different levels of difficulty, from 1 (easy) to 5 (difficult), for instrumental lessons:In print or electronic formatAvailable as printed editions or PDF downloadPractising - efficiently and with pleasureAccompanying tracks of the pieces available as downloads / Violoncelle Et Piano

RICHARD) Violoncelle, Piano Schott
Arrangeur: Florence Eller. Par STRAUSS RICHARD. The Cello Sonata Op. 6 was compo...(+)
Arrangeur: Florence Eller. Par STRAUSS RICHARD. The Cello Sonata Op. 6 was composed over an apparently frequently interrupted period of three years, an extraordinarily long time for Strauss's early creative phase. The compositional process spawned two independent versions of the work, the first of which is published for the first time on the basis of the text in the Critical Edition of the Works of Richard Strauss in the current edition as a practical musical text. The genesis of the two versions and the reasons for revision can only be reconstructed in part: only one of the surviving autographs bears a date and the second version only survives in printed form. What is more, Strauss did not communicate in greater detail on this composition in correspondence with his family and friends.
There are enormous differences between the two versions of the Sonata: Strauss deleted the entire second and third movements Larghetto and Allegro vivace, replacing them with a newly composed Andante and Finale. In the first movement, Allegro con brio, Strauss retained the thematic-motivic material and compositionally complex passages such as the three-voice fugue in the development section (from bar 241 in the first version and bar 275 in the second version) almost intact in the new version of the sonata, but also undertook extensive alterations, particularly in the structure of the piano part, the motivic-thematic development of the movement and its harmony which became far more ambitious.12 Particular attention should be drawn to the repetitive accompaniment of the con espressione theme beginning in bar 32 and the significantly shorter development in the first version.
The current printed edition of the first version of Richard Strauss's Cello Sonata now makes it possible to follow Strauss's compositional development during this period. The significance of the differences between the versions also mean that two sonata compositions for violoncello and piano by Richard Strauss with fundamental disparities in their underlying character are now available for performance.

18 Recital Pieces in First Position for Cello and Piano or Two Celli. The 18 pieces in Volume 1 are structured to follow the same progression of finger patterns introduced in the 'Early” Start method. This systematic progression helps the student to solidify the hand position and improve intonation. The basic bowing techniques do not require changes in bow speed or sounding point. The young performer can focus on a straight and beautifully placed bow that produces a pleasing and clear sound.
The 'Cello Recital Album”, Volume 1 (BA 8994), can be used as a supplement to the 'Early Start on the Cello” method, Volumes 1 and 2 (BA 8996 and BA 8997).
Collections of recital pieces for the cello:
- Charming collections of easy pieces in first position
- Each cello part is supported by a piano accompaniment for student performances
- Alternately a second cello part allows duo playing with the teacher during lessons. This early introduction to chamber music brings joy and satisfaction to the young cellist and teaches the student to hear the music as a whole.
- The two volumes (BA 8994, Ba 8995) are designed as companion publications to the Early Start on the Cello method. However, they work equally well as a supplement to any other cello method.
- A variety of rarely published works by well-known cellists and pedagogues such as Wilhelm Fitzenhagen, Hugo Schlemüller, and August Nölck make these publications attractive to teachers and students.

No less important, however, in addition to his symphonic work, is his group of works for piano and/or chamber music. His cello sonata in F major, with all four movements large in scale, was probably composed in 1831 for the daughter of the Cologne music patron, Dr. Erich Heinrich Verkenius. With its expressiveness, monumental structure, and post-Beethovenian sensuality, this sonata already seriously anticipates Romanticism. Par WINTERBERG HANS. Hans Winterberg, born in Prague in 1901, lived through almost the entire period of the 20th century and was influenced as a composer by its most important artistic innovations. Already a brilliant pianist as an adolescent, he studied with Alois Hába and Alexander von Zemlinsky in Prague. Both his life and his music reflect the Austrian-Czech-Jewish cultural symbiosis; he saw himself as a bridge builder between Western and Eastern, i.e. Slavic, cultures. Owing to his Jewish ancestry, he was deported to the Terezin concentration camp after the annexation of Czechoslovakia by Nazi Germany. He was the only Jewish representative of the Czech musical avant-garde of the 1920s and 1930s to survive the Shoah and, in 1947, followed his non-Jewish wife and their daughter to the FRG in the course of the expulsion of the German-speaking population from Czechoslovakia. Winterberg's fascinating oeuvre, which was kept under lock and key in a German music archive for years after his death, is now being made accessible in first editions due to a cooperation between the Exilarte Center for Banned Music at the University of Music in Vienna and Boosey & Hawkes. The first printed edition is Winterberg's Cello Sonata, composed in 1951, in which all the characteristics of his unmistakable personal style come to the fore: dance-like energy, polyrhythm, intimate yet unsentimental melos, subtle handling of folkloristic material, and an unerring sense of form and balance. This work is of medium technical and great interpretative difficulty. / Date parution : 2024-01-06/ Répertoire / Violoncelle et Piano

Par ECCLES HENRY. Henry Eccles left behind a number of smaller works most of which were written for violins or flutes. However, the most famous is this Sonata in G minor. Though often played in transcription by violinists and especially by double bass players, the sonata was originally published for cello in four movements – Prelude, Courante, Sarabande and Gigue – accompanied by a figured bass. Little is known about Henry Eccles. Neither his birth nor his death date has been firmly established, ranging respectively between 1675-85 and 1735-45. It is not even certain that he composed this sonata. He probably hailed from London and later served at the court of Louis XV in France. Arrangement for Violoncello and Piano by Carl HüllweckThe gourmet's delightIn 1876, ten years before César Franck's violin sonata in the same key, Gabriel Fauré made a major contribution to the first flowering of French chamber music with his A-major Sonata op. 13. He even found a publisher for it right away, namely Breitkopf and Härtel in Leipzig. Both the work and the composer were warmly acclaimed immediately after the publication: This sonata contains everything that appeals to the gourmet: new forms, wonderful modulations, unusual tone colors, unexpected rhythms. With this work of such modest appearance, Mr. Fauré has leapt to the top ranks of the masters in one bound. Thus wrote Camille Saint-Saëns with pride about his pupil's work. The publisher seems to have picked out a true gem from Fauré's 'uvre, for the sonata soon became very popular, and in 1889, Breitkopf and Härtel heightened this popularity by releasing an arrangement for violoncello by Carl Hüllweck. It is likely that Fauré not only approved the arrangement, but also proofread it. Long out of print, this edition will once again allow cellists to enjoy Fauré's violin sonata in a competent period arrangement.

Revisione Sull'Autografo Di Rina You. Par PILATI MARIO. The artistic production of the Neapolitan composer Mario Pilati (Naples, 1903-1938) has recently been undergoing a reappraisal. Having died at a young age, he never had the opportunity to gain the recognition he deserved, and much of his music has, in fact, fallen into oblivion. Less well-known than his Sonata in La (Sonata in A major) written a few years later for the same formation, his Sonata per violoncello e pianoforte (Sonata in D major for cello and piano) was composed in 1922 when the composer was nineteen years old, in the ninth year of his compositional studies in the class of Maestro Antonio Savasta. The Sonata, based on the opening of a piece by Carl Reinecke, is in sonata form, and develops over a single movement. In the piece, which has got clear post-romantic connotations, the expressive vein, singing lines and lyricism that would also distinguish Pilati’s later works can already be heard. / Niveau : Intermédiaire / Date parution : 1905-07-10/ Répertoire / Violoncelle et Piano

| Sonata No. 2 In G Minor
Op. 117 (FAURE GABRIEL) Violoncelle, Piano G. Henle

Sonata no. 2 in g minor op. 117 for Violoncello and Piano. Par FAURE GABRIEL. In contrast to the first cello sonata (HN 1357) composed four years earlier, this substantially more catchy and playful second sonata enjoyed great success with audiences and critics right from the start. Friend and associate Vincent d'Indy wrote to Fauré the day after the premiere in May 1922: I would like to tell you how much I am still charmed by your so beautiful sonata. In it I found what is seemingly forgotten these days: music.” It therefore comes as no surprise that the sonata rapidly found its way into the concert repertoire, where it maintains an uncontested position to this today. The duo David Geringas and Markus Bellheim provided fingerings. / Classique / Répertoire / Violoncelle et Piano
