Programme
Note CANTICA for cello
and piano (1977)When in
1975 I had finished
composing my Symphony no.
3 (begun in 1973), I
wrote three simple
melodies for two psalm
texts by Ole Sarvig: The
Year and Choral Hymn.
These three tunes were
derived from the same
material as the second
movement of the symphony
and could be harmonized
together in several
different tempo
relationships, like
proportional canons. For
this reason they inspired
me to write several
choral and instrumental
works in the following
decade: Frost Psalm,
Winter Cantata, the tuba
octet Now all the earth
is white with snow,
Canticles (and
others).Cantica, meaning
song or singing, was
composed (forthe Danish
musicians Hans Erik
Dechert og Kjeld Hansen)
as a instrumental little
brother the long,
polyphonic choral pieces.
As in these the canonical
melodies in Cantica drift
from foreground to
background, from cello to
piano. The melodies are
simple, diatonic and in
traditional rhythms and
the surface of the music
in a way traditional. The
intention of the composer
with this easily
understood expression is
to lead the listeners
ears to the many
internal, proportional
developments. The story
is in a way hidden
between the lines. In the
myriads of rhythmic and
tempo relations the
Golden Mean (near to
2:3:5:8: et cetera) plays
an important role, like
in nature. Among the
experiences giving by
this natural phenomenon
are - perhaps - the
musical points to be
found (?).Per
Norgard(1997).

Mica
ntia is the Latin word
for ‘things that
are
twinkling/shimmering/shin

inspiration for this
piece is found in many
sudden observations of
beautiful sceneries like
sunbeams shining through
clouds, snow crystals in
winter time or icy
landscapes. In a way too
hasty world, the piece is
meant to slow down a
little and give you a
moment of reflection on
how mesmerizing the world
is around us.

Mustonen
belongs to the young
generation of composing
piano virtuosos. What is
remarkable is that 'his
instrument' is not placed
in the foreground of his
works. He rather composed
pieces for strings,
sonatas with piano
accompaniment, orchestral
works and even a piece
for guitar referring to
the history of his home
country Finland.The cello
sonata was premiered by
Mustonen with the cellist
Daniel Muller-Schott in
Hamburg. No special
emphasis is given to
polyphonic coexistence;
instead, the piano,
playing chordally, acts
as a real accompaniment
most of the time.
Cantilenas of the cello,
tricky rhythms, and
almost symphonic sound
eruptions make the piece
a sure-fire hit with the
public.

Eduard Putz
(1911-2000) studied with
Heinrich Lemacher and
Hermann Schroeder at the
Cologne Musikhochschule
and later worked as a
music teacher at the
grammar school in
Rheinbach near Bonn as
well as a composition
teacher at the Rhenish
Music School in Cologne.
Overcoming the boundaries
between serious and
entertaining music was
what mattered to him
which is why he wrote
many works which tried to
combine jazz and new
music. His 'Adagietto'
for violoncello and piano
(1990) was discovered
within the composer's
estate and published for
the first time. Prof.
Julius Berger arranged
the piece for practical
playing, adding
appropriate fingerings. A
short performance piece
with interesting
harmonies and arpeggios
in the piano part and
expressive cantilenas in
the cello part.

this publication was
issued in London in 1745
by John Walsh Jr. Walsh s
publication contains six
four-movement works,
originally written for
violin, solo cello, a
keyboard instrument and a
second cello to reinforce
the bass of the latter,
but the role of the
violin is insignificant,
so these works can be
regarded as pieces for
cello. Of the six works,
the arranger of the
volume was publishing the
three most suitable ones
to that as cello
concertos the piano part
incorporates both the
violin interludes and the

part higher positions do

Sparke’s
Starter Solos is
the first volume of a
progressive series of
books that takes the
young wind player from
beginner to accomplished
musician. Specifically
tailored for each
instrument, this
collection of 20 solos
starts with pieces based
on only a handful of
notes and carefully
introduces new musical
elements, such as
articulation, dynamics
and key signatures, in a
structured progression to
speed the learning
process. The books
provide invaluable
additional material to
complement any teaching
method.Starter
Solos comes with a
play-along CD. The
advantages of playing
either with piano or CD
accompaniment are that
the beginning player can
nowexperience the
important aspects of
ensemble playing from
their earliest lessons,
thus developing the
essential skills of
listening while they play
and maintaining strict
tempo, which is not
always a factor when
playing alone.
Philip
Sparke’s
Starter Solos is
het eerste deel van een
serie boeken met muziek
voor jonge blazers. Deze
bundel van twintig
solo’s begint met
stukken die op een
handvol noten zijn
gebaseerd. Nieuwe
muzikale elementen
(articulatie,
dynamiek,enz.) worden op
een doordachte,
gestructureerde manier
toegevoegd. Dit
studiemateriaal vult elke
leermethode aan en is
steeds toegesneden op het

motivierendes
Lehrmaterial. Für
diese zwei Solobücher

einen Rahmen schafft, in
den sich neue
musikalische Elemente in
sinnvoller Reihenfolge
einfügen lassen.

The
Cello Sonata Op. 6 was
composed over an
apparently frequently
interrupted period of
three years, an
extraordinarily long time
for Strauss's early
creative phase. The
compositional process
spawned two independent
versions of the work, the
first of which is
published for the first
time on the basis of the
text in the Critical
Edition of the Works of
Richard Strauss in the
current editionas a
practical musical text.
The genesis of the two
versions and the reasons
for revision can only be
reconstructed in part:
only one of the surviving
autographs bears a date
and the second version
only survives in printed
form. What is more,
Strauss did not
communicate in greater
detail on this
composition in
correspondence with his
family and friends. There
are enormous differences
between the two versions
of the Sonata: Strauss
deleted the entire second
and third movements
Larghetto and Allegro
vivace, replacing them
with a newly composed
Andante and Finale. In
the first movement,
Allegro con brio, Strauss
retained the
thematic-motivic material
and compositionally
complex passages such as
the three-voice fugue in
the developmentsection
(from bar 241 in the
first version and bar 275
in the second version)
almost intact in the new
version of the sonata,
but also undertook
extensive alterations,
particularly in the
structure of the piano
part, the
motivic-thematic
development of the
movement and its harmony
which became far more
ambitious.12 Particular
attention should be drawn
to the repetitive
accompaniment of the con
espressione theme
beginning in bar 32 and
the significantly shorter
development in the first
version. The current
printed edition of the
first version of Richard
Strauss's Cello Sonata
now makes it possible to
follow Strauss's
compositional development
during this period. The
significance of the
differences between the
versions also mean that
two sonata compositions
for violoncello and piano
by Richard Strauss with
fundamental disparities
in their underlying
character are now
available for
performance.

The
three pieces From Jewish
Life were composed by
Swiss-American composer
Ernest Bloch in 1924, the
same year he took U.S.
citizenship. Though
clearly inspired and
influenced by Jewish
experience, they are
purely concert pieces,
and do not provide any
specific liturgical
significance.
The
first movement, Prayer,
is a deeply heartfelt
plea to the almighty. As
Neil W Levin writes, The
initial four-note motive
in the minor mode,
together with its
elaboration in the
ensuing phrases, sounds
as if it might have
served as the skeletal
model for Max Janowski's
(1912-1991) now
well-known setting of the
High Holyday prayer Avinu
Malkenu. This prayer has
special meaning in my own
spiritual life, as I have
been singing it since my
childhood. Both Prayer
and Janowski's Avinu
Malkenu are cantorial in
nature, to be sung with
heartfelt
pathos.
The second
movement, Supplication
(the act of begging
humbly), has more angst,
almost a sense of urgency
as a result of the
rhythmic motor in the
piano. The third
movement, Jewish Song,
evokes a quintessentially
Eastern-European
melancholy. Its falling
motives with bent
intonation might
represent the pain of the
Jewish
experience.
The
works were dedicated to
Dutch-American cellist
Hans Kindler, a highly
influential musician of
his time, and founder of
the National Symphony
Orchestra in Washington,
D.C. Mr. Kindler was the
soloist for the world
premiere of Bloch's most
celebrated work, Schelomo
in 1917.
Though
the popularity of Bloch's
oeuvre has been dominated
by works of Jewish
connection, we should not
forget that Bloch had
many other stylistic
periods, including
Franco-Belgian, modal,
serial, and even American
folk. In 1927, he was
awarded Musical America's
composition prize in a
unanimous vote, despite
being regarded as an
outsider by American
music writers at the
time. His winning work
America (1928) was
performed by every major
orchestra and conductor
in the following seasons.

Ekah is the
Hebrew word for
Lamentations, as in the
book of Lamentations in

translation of this word
would be How or Ah! How.
When the cellist, Inbal
Segev asked me to write a
new piece for cello and
piano, and as a part of
our discussion, I decided
to compose a new piece
that reflected on the
immense challenges that
the year 2020 has
presented. The hows and
lamentations in this
piece might be: how can
there still be so much
hate in the world since
we are all equal and
created in the image of
God? How can there be
such police brutality in
2020? How and why is the
whole world suffering
with the Coronavirus

mental health, cities,

desolate? We can hope,
