Idealism,
humanity, world peace,
and altruism, have been
recurring themes and
inspirations in many
compositions by Eric
Ewazen. In 2007, the
Sejong Soloists
commissioned this work
for Cello and Strings to
feature Paula Zahn as
guest soloist –
the celebrated
telejournalist is an
exceptional cellist, and
a frequent and
distinguished host for
the concerts Sejong
performs in New York
City. The work was
written for a gala
concert honoring Ban
Ki-Moon, Secretary
General of the United
Nations, and therefore
the ultimate leader of
international
peacekeeping efforts. The
resulting work, equally
suitable for Cello and
Piano, is appropriately
titled A POEM OF
HOPE.

POSTC
ARDS FROM UKRAINE is a
charming-yet-fiery suite
of six character pieces
reflecting the culture
and music of
Didorenkoâ??s homeland.
The work was composed in
early 2022 following the
invasion. Movements 2 and
3 are inspired by folk
music with the piano
imitating sounds of the
bandura, and the other
four movements are free
settings of authentic
folk melodies. More
and more in recent times,
I turn to the musical
heritage of my native
Ukraine for inspiration.
Shortly after the start
of the war in Spring
2022, my friend and New
York pianist Evelyne
Luest approached me with
a suggestion to compose a
piece based on Ukrainian
folk music. As I began to
research authentic song
and dance styles, I was
immediately drawn to
their soulful melodies
and stirring rhythms.
Postcards from Ukraine
came into being in just
under a month.The second
of these six pieces is
written in the style of
duma, a sung epic poem
recited by itinerant
bards, accompanied on a
bandura; strumming on the
high piano strings
imitates the banduraâ??s
sound. In the third
piece, an ostinato bass
is another impression of
bandura playing, while
the cello references
Carpathian dance tunes.
The other four pieces are
my interpretations of
true Ukrainian folk
songs, typically sung a
cappella by a womenâ??s
choir, from small
villages that keep their
vocal traditions
alive.

Sonnets is
a collection of
miniatures for cello and
piano. To me, these
micro-pieces are sonnets
not in the rigorously
formalized Elizabethan or
Petrarchan senses of the
word. Rather, they grow
from the term's older,
freer roots in the
Italian word sonetto,
meaning little song or
little sound. Each of my
five little songs takes
as its title and point of
inspiration a fragment
from a Shakespeare
sonnet.- Andrew

Farewell
for cello and piano
(2013) has been
commissioned by the
Cracow Duo consisting of
Jan Kalinowski (cello)
and Marek Szlezer
(piano). The composition
has a single-movement
structure but it
differentiates
internally. A poem
written by Nakano
Shigeharu (1902-1979)
entitled Wakare (Parting)
was the inspiration for
the composition. In the
poem, Nakano raises very
important issues for all
to consider: of love,
fragility of well-being,
suffering, death and
vanishing. Deeply moved,
I decided to write a
compostion which gives
the atmosphere of this
muted and very personal
poetry. -Marcel
Chyrzynski.

The title
of the piece refers to
the Agama, a fundamental
holy scripture of early
Buddhism. The young
composer says about it:
'The basic ideas of these
writings were a source of
my inspiration. The
compositional material
corresponds to my own
musical language and is
strongly linked to the
spirit and concept of
these Buddhist
writings.'The result is a
very lively and spirited

passages among the

The piece is a harmonious
blend of Chinese
contemporary music and
distinct reminiscences of
tradition.

the instrumentation
flute, clarinet, violin,
violoncello and piano was
premiered on 21 May 2014
in Beijing at the
'Beijing Modern Music

the ensemble 'Les Temps

work received its
essential inspiration
from ancient Chinese

also simultaneously
documents the overcoming
of a creative crisis.
During an artistically
difficult period, Jia
assigned himself the task
in 1997 to compose a

Ein
Liebespaar, unter deren
Gier der Boden nachgibt
und deren Lust zu
Treibholz wird: dies ist
das Herz von Hans Thills
Gedicht Paradox und
stellt den ersten Moment
der Inspiration fur
Christian Jost dar,
diesem Text musikalische
Gestalt zu verleihen. Die
reduzierte Sprache des
Gedichts, seine surreale
erotische Welt, eroffnet
Raume, in denen Satze zu
Romanen und einzelne
Worter zu endlosen Linien
werden. Kompositorisch
hat dies fur Jost nicht
nur die Moglichkeit
geschaffen, eine
Geschichte hinter der
Geschichte zu erzahlen,
sondern auch jedes
einzelen Wort in Klange
einzuschweissen, deren
Richtung er bestimmt.
Folgerichtig ist demnach
im Text und nicht an ihm
entlang komponiert
worden. Was bedeutet: der
ohnehin zerschnittenen
Sprache wurde eine
weitere Ebene
hinzugefugt, indem die
jeweiligen
Textschwerpunkte in
verschiedene Klangbilder
gefasst wurden, deren
Summe dann die
Dramaturgie des Ganzen
bestimmt hat. Dadurch
haben sich grossere
atmosplarische
Unterschiede und
Spannungen ergeben, als
das sehr lyrische Gedicht
vermuten liesse. So aber
konnte der Komponist eine
Dichte an Ausdruck und
Intensitat entwickeln,
die bereits im Text
enthalten sind, auch wenn
er sich in ein lyrisches
Gewand verkleidet
hat.

The
three pieces From Jewish
Life were composed by
Swiss-American composer
Ernest Bloch in 1924, the
same year he took U.S.
citizenship. Though
clearly inspired and
influenced by Jewish
experience, they are
purely concert pieces,
and do not provide any
specific liturgical
significance.
The
first movement, Prayer,
is a deeply heartfelt
plea to the almighty. As
Neil W Levin writes, The
initial four-note motive
in the minor mode,
together with its
elaboration in the
ensuing phrases, sounds
as if it might have
served as the skeletal
model for Max Janowski's
(1912-1991) now
well-known setting of the
High Holyday prayer Avinu
Malkenu. This prayer has
special meaning in my own
spiritual life, as I have
been singing it since my
childhood. Both Prayer
and Janowski's Avinu
Malkenu are cantorial in
nature, to be sung with
heartfelt
pathos.
The second
movement, Supplication
(the act of begging
humbly), has more angst,
almost a sense of urgency
as a result of the
rhythmic motor in the
piano. The third
movement, Jewish Song,
evokes a quintessentially
Eastern-European
melancholy. Its falling
motives with bent
intonation might
represent the pain of the
Jewish
experience.
The
works were dedicated to
Dutch-American cellist
Hans Kindler, a highly
influential musician of
his time, and founder of
the National Symphony
Orchestra in Washington,
D.C. Mr. Kindler was the
soloist for the world
premiere of Bloch's most
celebrated work, Schelomo
in 1917.
Though
the popularity of Bloch's
oeuvre has been dominated
by works of Jewish
connection, we should not
forget that Bloch had
many other stylistic
periods, including
Franco-Belgian, modal,
serial, and even American
folk. In 1927, he was
awarded Musical America's
composition prize in a
unanimous vote, despite
being regarded as an
outsider by American
music writers at the
time. His winning work
America (1928) was
performed by every major
orchestra and conductor
in the following seasons.

contributions to American

The
melodies from George
Gershwin's (1898-1937)
musicals, from 'Porgy and
Bess', from orchestral
pieces like 'Rhapsody in
Blue' or 'An American in
Paris', we all know them!
But the career of the
young musician started as
a pianist in a music
publishing house where he
was to encourage
customers to buy music by
playing it. Soon he began
to compose music himself
and caught the attention
of the Broadway, which
paved the way to his
international career.
Inspired by Frederic
Chopin's 24 Preludes, he
began to write his own
'Preludes' for the piano
in the mid-1920s: Of the
five preludes composed by
him, he used two for the
violin composition 'Short
Story' and presented the
other three at a concert
on 4 December 1926. These
'Preludes' combine
classical moments and
jazz elements into an
effective whole and can
be played individually or
as a little jazz sonata
(fast - slow - fast).
Thanks to the present
arrangement, the charming
miniatures are now
available in a version
for solo instrument and
piano accompaniment.

pianist, composer,

artist Peter Ludwig is an
all-round talent from
Bavaria. He writes film
music, chansons, chamber

Together with the cellist

not been able to get the
tango out of his mind,

addition to the cello

His 'Variations' for

medium difficulty (use of

The three variations on a

cantabile theme concludes

In this
trio, as in most of his
compositions, Jost has
pictures and associations
with true incidents,
films and novels in his
mind. What inspired him
to write this piece was
Joseph Conrad's novel
'Heart of Darkness' in
which the protagonist
Marlow says about the
city of Brussels: 'In a
few hours I arrived in a
city that always make me
think of a whited
sepulchre.'In 'Sepulchral
City', a work
commissioned to mark the
tenth anniversary of the
Jerusalem Chamber Music
Festival, however, the
title refers to
Jerusalem, the city of
white tombs. The topic of
Jost's trio is a travel
into the soul and living
spirit of a city, with no
physical movement being
needed to find the heart
of impenetrable darkness:
It lies within the city
walls.In this respect,
'Sepulchral City' equals
a compositionally
unfolded funeral bell.
Even the animated middle
section rather has
insisting than
progressive power. At the
end, the only thing to do
is to inhale and
exhale.
