In
1901, Flor Alpaerts
finished his music
studies at the Flemish
School of Music of
Antwerp, which later
became the Royal Flemish
Conservatory. He studied
harmony and composition
with Jan Blockx. In 1903
he became professor at
this institute and from
1934 until 1941 its
director. For one season
(1922-1923) he was also
director of the Royal
Flemish Opera House of
Antwerp together with the
Bass Arthur Steurbaut.
His fame, as a composer
and a conductor, came
shortly after World War
I, when he succeeded in
1919 Eduard Keurvels as
conductor of the concerts
organized by the Royal
Zoological Society of
Antwerp and as artistic
director of the Peter
Benoit Fonds. He also
conducted the choral
group Arti Vocali. As a
composer, Flor Alpaerts
was the leading figure in
the Flemish
impressionistic movement.
An impressionism that
came closer to Richard
Strauss and Ottorino
Respighi than to Claude
Debussy. A highlight in
this direction was the
symphonic poem Pallieter
(1921-1924). With his
suite James Ensor,
inspired by four works of
the Ostend painter, he
created an
expressionistic work. In
his later compositions he
turned to
neo-classicism.

Programme
Note CANTICA for cello
and piano (1977)When in
1975 I had finished
composing my Symphony no.
3 (begun in 1973), I
wrote three simple
melodies for two psalm
texts by Ole Sarvig: The
Year and Choral Hymn.
These three tunes were
derived from the same
material as the second
movement of the symphony
and could be harmonized
together in several
different tempo
relationships, like
proportional canons. For
this reason they inspired
me to write several
choral and instrumental
works in the following
decade: Frost Psalm,
Winter Cantata, the tuba
octet Now all the earth
is white with snow,
Canticles (and
others).Cantica, meaning
song or singing, was
composed (forthe Danish
musicians Hans Erik
Dechert og Kjeld Hansen)
as a instrumental little
brother the long,
polyphonic choral pieces.
As in these the canonical
melodies in Cantica drift
from foreground to
background, from cello to
piano. The melodies are
simple, diatonic and in
traditional rhythms and
the surface of the music
in a way traditional. The
intention of the composer
with this easily
understood expression is
to lead the listeners
ears to the many
internal, proportional
developments. The story
is in a way hidden
between the lines. In the
myriads of rhythmic and
tempo relations the
Golden Mean (near to
2:3:5:8: et cetera) plays
an important role, like
in nature. Among the
experiences giving by
this natural phenomenon
are - perhaps - the
musical points to be
found (?).Per
Norgard(1997).

Hails
tork had originally
written his Elegy in
1980, in memory of a
friend's passing. Decades
later, he was asked by
cellist Tim Holly to
finish the work, and the
Caprice was added in
2016. Despite 35 years of
intervening life and
changes in musical
language, Hailstork has
matched the tonality of
the earlier movement. His
transcription for viola
and piano was performed
in October at New Music
Norfolk (Hampton Roads)
by Rebecca Sinclair Kim
and Susan Ha.
