The
main theme of
‘Remembranceâ€
was written at the
exact moment the 9 -11
attacks in the US
happened. The composer
didn’t have any
knowledge of the attack
until his neighbour came
shouting at his window.
Obviously, this theme
became the composers
homage for the victims of
this cruel act.
‘Remembranceâ€
became the title track
of Van Marcke’s
second CD. This chamber
music version for cello
and piano was premiered
exactly 20 years later
during the Musica@Parola
Festival at the church of
Sint Martens Bodegem
(Belgium).

Philip
Sparke’s
Skilful Solos is
the second volume of a
progressive series of
solo books that takes the
young wind player from
beginner to accomplished
musician. Following on
from the first book in
the series Starter
Solos this collection
generally contains longer
pieces suitable for the
developing young
musician. Specifically
tailored for each
instrument, Skilful
Solos introduces the
concept of phrasing by
suggesting suitable
breathing points and
takes the player into new
keys with extended
instrumental ranges, new
notes being introduced in
a gradual and logical
manner.Skilful
Solos comes with a
play-along CD. The
advantages of playing
eitherwith piano or CD
accompaniment are that
the beginning player can
now experience the
important aspects of
ensemble playing from
their earliest lessons,
thus developing the
essential skills of
listening while they play
and maintaining strict
tempo, which is not
always achieved when
playing alone.
Skilful
Solos past in het
rijtje Starter
Studies, Skilful
Studies, Super
Studies en Starter
Solos, een succesvolle
reeks van Philip Sparke.
Net als de eerdergenoemde
uitgaven bevat Skilful
Solos
waardevol,motiverend
speelmateriaal dat de
keuze voor een methode
aanvult. Nieuwe muzikale
elementen komen in een
logische volgorde aan de
orde - om de ontwikkeling
van de complete muzikant
te bevorderen. Uitgave
met cd: De voordelen van
het spelen metbegeleiding
- hetzij op de piano,
hetzij op de cd - zijn
dat de beginnende speler
de belangrijke aspecten
van het ensemblespel kan
ervaren vanaf de eerste
lessen en essentiële
vaardigheden kan
aanleren: het luisteren
tijdens het spelen en
hethandhaven van een
strak tempo. Bij het
alleen spelen komen deze
factoren minder aan de
orde.

Ruralia
Hungarica was originally
a five movements cycle of
piano pieces (Op. 32/a)
composed in 1923 on
Hungarian folk songs,
dedicated to Dohnanyi-s
mother. In 1924, five
movements of the piano
cycle was orchestrated
(Op. 32/b), the
orchestral version was
premiered under the baton
of the composer on 14
September 1924, in Pecs
(South Hungary). Ruralia
Hungarica was one of
Dohnanyi-s favorite
works. He often performed
both the version for
piano and the one for
orchestra, and he
composed other versions,
too: three movements for
violin and piano (Op.
32/c) and one movement
for violoncello and piano
(Op. 32/d).

The
three pieces From Jewish
Life were composed by
Swiss-American composer
Ernest Bloch in 1924, the
same year he took U.S.
citizenship. Though
clearly inspired and
influenced by Jewish
experience, they are
purely concert pieces,
and do not provide any
specific liturgical
significance.
The
first movement, Prayer,
is a deeply heartfelt
plea to the almighty. As
Neil W Levin writes, The
initial four-note motive
in the minor mode,
together with its
elaboration in the
ensuing phrases, sounds
as if it might have
served as the skeletal
model for Max Janowski's
(1912-1991) now
well-known setting of the
High Holyday prayer Avinu
Malkenu. This prayer has
special meaning in my own
spiritual life, as I have
been singing it since my
childhood. Both Prayer
and Janowski's Avinu
Malkenu are cantorial in
nature, to be sung with
heartfelt
pathos.
The second
movement, Supplication
(the act of begging
humbly), has more angst,
almost a sense of urgency
as a result of the
rhythmic motor in the
piano. The third
movement, Jewish Song,
evokes a quintessentially
Eastern-European
melancholy. Its falling
motives with bent
intonation might
represent the pain of the
Jewish
experience.
The
works were dedicated to
Dutch-American cellist
Hans Kindler, a highly
influential musician of
his time, and founder of
the National Symphony
Orchestra in Washington,
D.C. Mr. Kindler was the
soloist for the world
premiere of Bloch's most
celebrated work, Schelomo
in 1917.
Though
the popularity of Bloch's
oeuvre has been dominated
by works of Jewish
connection, we should not
forget that Bloch had
many other stylistic
periods, including
Franco-Belgian, modal,
serial, and even American
folk. In 1927, he was
awarded Musical America's
composition prize in a
unanimous vote, despite
being regarded as an
outsider by American
music writers at the
time. His winning work
America (1928) was
performed by every major
orchestra and conductor
in the following seasons.

contributions to American

Fingering

Aside from the Piano
Quartet op. 13 and the
Violin Sonata op. 18, the
Cello Sonata numbers
among the most mature
works of chamber music
from Strauss' early
oeuvre. The influences of
Mendelssohn, Schumann,
and Brahms are
noticeable, while leaving
sufficient space for a
very personal tonal
language, often with
surprising rhythmic and
harmonic turns of phrase.
Strauss subjected the
first version completed
in early 1881 to a
radical revision over the
winter of 1882/83; the
opening movement was
thoroughly reworked, the
two subsequent movements
rewritten completely. It
was worth it, because
after the premiere in
Dresden, the composer
wrote to his mother,
“My sonata garnered
extraordinary acclaim,
the applause was
enormous, congratulations
came to me from all
sides.â€.

mainly drew attention
with its logical and
clear structure, begins
with a powerful and
substantial cello solo,
to which the piano
responds with a
glimmering series of
arpeggiated chords. At
the end where the
instruments unite in a
harmonious, deeply
emotional song, the
harmonic impression they
create is very bright and
lovely. The autograph
manuscript of Fantasia
shows that Sibelius
omitted a larger passage
of music between the
present bars 24 and 25
and that he made further
revisions to the work,
either before the
publishing process or in
the proofs he read in
April 1911 for
Breitkopf.

The
triumphal concert hall
success of Tchaikovsky's
most popular and
musically most valuable
concert pieces for solo
instrument and orchestra
was preceded by severe
teething troubles. His
Piano Concerto No. 1 Op.
23 of 1874/75 was slated
by Tchaikovsky's mentor
and potential performer
at the premiere, the
pianist, conductor and
director of the Moscow
Conservatory, Nikolai
Rubinstein. So Hans von
Bulow premiered it
gratefully and
enthusiastically (in
Boston, USA, on 25
October 1875). Leopold
Auer, violin virtuoso and
professor at the
Petersburg Conservatory,
to whom Tchaikovsky
wanted to dedicate his
Violin Concerto Op. 35 of
1878, refused to premiere
it - he regarded the solo
part as unrewarding and
unplayable. On 4 December
1881, Adolf Brodsky
premiered the Violin
Concerto in Vienna, with
Hans Richter conducting,
but Eduard Hanslick wrote
a crushing and unpleasant
review. The Variations on
a Rococo Theme for Cello
and Orchestra Op. 33 were
finally published by
their dedicatee, the
German cellist and
professor at the Moscow
Conservatory, Wilhelm
Fitzenhagen, after he had
almost completely
rewritten and then
premiered it on 18
December 1877 in Moscow,
while Tchaikovsky, who
had asked him to publish
the work, was abroad. The
original version, which
can be found in this
edition, was not
published until the
1950s.

America, this beautiful
neo-romantic work was
first performed on
January 17, 1993 by Emil
Miland and Robin
Sutherland. A substantial
work at 20 minutes, the
sonata, alternates
between lyrical writing
and music with a
scherzo-like feel that is
both lively and animated.
Sonata for Cello and
Piano is written in one
movement that flows
extremely well with an
intertwined cohesiveness
between the two players.
A memorable piece for a
cello recital!
