This
cello sonata by the
renowned jazz pianist and
professor of jazz piano
unites in a certain way
“the best of two
worldsâ€: melodies,
sophisticated harmonies
and rousing rhythms,
which are also convincing
in a pure jazz context,
are fused here with a
formal language and
movement techniques that
are oriented towards
classical models. The
voices of both
instruments are
interwoven on an equal
footing and take the
listener on an exciting
musical journey from the
very first moment, which
finds its virtuoso climax
in the lively rondo via a
classical sonata main
movement and a quiet
middle movement.

Wolfgang
Köhler, professor of
jazz piano at the Berlin
Jazz Institute, writes
music in the border area
between classical, jazz
and contemporary music.
His 'Variations' for
cello and piano are
cross-over music in the
best sense of the word
and a rewarding concert
and examination piece of
medium difficulty (use of
thumb position demanded).
The three variations on a
vocal theme use different
styles like Latin (var.
1), ballad (var. 2) to
rhythm and harmony
inspired by Prokofiev
(var. 3). The
recapitulation of the
cantabile theme concludes
the original, effective
piece which has a
duration of six
minutes.

“Bohu
slav Martinu (1890-1959)
was a prolific Czech
composer, writing many
large scale works. The
composer moved to Paris
in 1923 where he began
experimenting in a
variety of composition
styles. Pastorales for
Cello and Piano was
published in 1931 and is
made up of six pieces.
Martinu himself was a
violinist and the
beginning of his
experiments in composing
for solo instruments saw
him write for strings.
Pastorales for Cello
exemplifies the
composer's influence of
Stravinsky, Debussy
neoclassicism, surrealism
and jazz. The piece is
excitingly virtuosic in
its use of double stops,
complex rhythms,
chromaticism, and
ensemble between the
Cello and Piano. As a
varied, substantial work
for the Cello repertoire,
Martinu's Pastorales is
essential for the
advanced
performer.â€.

Take Seven
is a tried and trusted
showpiece with audience
appeal. The title Take
Seven is of course a play
on Paul Desmond's famous
Take Five and its
recording by the Dave
Brubeck Quartet. As
there, the rhythms in
this piece are largely
based on an asymmetric
metre - in this case, 7/4
time. Unlike most jazz
pieces with an uneven
metre, however, Take
Seven goes through
various moods, sections
and tempo changes,
illuminating the main
theme from different
angles.
