A
special piece - a special
story: In 2020, a
renowned architect
approached a composer to
create a new piece of
music for his daughter's
wedding, which the happy
father could give to the
young couple as a wedding
present. In earlier eras
of private patronage,
such a story would have
been natural, but in the
21st century it is an odd
story. The composition
subtly alludes to the
occasion: against the
background of the piano,
a duet of two instruments
tells the story of a
serene love (the piece
can either be performed
with a bassoon and a
violoncello, or with two
violoncellos). Mate
Bella, who moves at home
among different musical
styles, shapes the song
of lovers longing for
each other in a way
reminiscent of barcarolas
sung by Venetian
gondoliers.

“More

artists, and aficionados
to write about fingerings

violoncello,â€
then-famous Berlin
cellist Jean-Louis Duport
thus opens his
“Essai†from
1806, dedicated to
“Professeurs de
Violoncelle.†His
methodology
revolutionized cello
technique, and the 21
etudes printed in its
appendix are still
regarded today as perhaps
the most important set of
studies for all budding
cellists. Modelled after
the volumes of etudes for
violin, Henle is also
issuing the Urtext here,
together with all
original fingerings and
bowings, while also
offering alternatives by
the famous cellist and
teacher Wolfgang Emanuel
Schmidt. This edition
also offers a second
cello part provided by
Duport for
accompaniment.

Vict
oria Yagling's Suite for
Cello and String
Orchestra (1967) is one
of her first successes as
a composer. The movement
layout of the Suite is
fast-slow-fast-slow. The
first movement, Toccata,
is a perpetual motion
with a brisk tempo of 100
per dotted half. The Aria
is reminiscent of
Rachmaninov's Vocalise
melody and Prokofiev's
tonal language. This
movement is the
centerpiece of the Suite.
The Humoresque is closely
connected in style and
motives to the March and
Aria movements from Boris
Tchaikovsky's Suite for
Cello Solo. Mostly
homophonic Finale plays
with bitonality and
contains several
circle-of-fifth
sequences.

Vi
ctoria Yagling
(1946?2011) was born in
Russia and lived in
Finland since 1990. Her
long career as a cellist
served as an excellent
accompaniment to the
composition she began at
an early age. For 11
years she was a cello
student of Mstislav
Rostropovich at the
Moscow Conservatory and
Dmitry Kabalevsky and
Tikhon Khrennikov taught
her
composition.
Yagli
ng won the first prize in
the Gaspar Cassadò
Cello Competition and the
following year the second
prize in the Moscow
Tchaikovsky Competition.
Her solo engagements took
her to countless
countries. She has also
taught at several
international music
courses and master
classes and was often a
jury member for
international cello
competitions.
Yagl
ing left a profilic
oeuvre, and the three
cello concertos are her
main works. Her other
orchestral works include
Finnish Notebook, Lyrical
Preludes and the Suite
for Cello and String
Orchestra. She has also
composed solo works (e.g.
the Suite for Cello Solo
No. 1 chosen as an
obligatory piece for the
7th Tchaikovsky
Competition in Moscow in
1982), chamber works,
including two string
quartets, and vocal
music. Her expressive,
romantically orientated
style is Russian in
spirit and has grown out
of the soil provided by
Prokofiev and
Shostakovich.

The film
noir genre of 1940s
cinema typically includes
a strong but flawed male
lead (often a detective),
a beautiful woman who
coerces the male into
committing murder or is a
killer herself (a
“femme
fataleâ€), and a
twisting plot line that
involves one or more
homicides. These movies
typically are shot in
black and white, with
emphasis on shadows and
light, alcohol and
cigarettes, trench coats
and fedoras. Most of the
story lines do not have
happy endings. Inspired
by this genre, NOIR
VIGNETTES consists of
four movements, each
depicting an aspect of
film noir: Murder at
Midnight, Loaded Gun,
Femme Fatale, and Last
Cigarette. In the
mid-1940s, film critics
in France noticed a trend
emerging in movies from
the United States, which
they coined film noir
(which translates to
“black
filmâ€). These
movies were dark, moody,
and pessimistic,
reflecting the agitation
and anxiety present in
society following World
War II. Several
characteristics are
commonly found in many of
these movies, including a
strong but flawed male
lead (often a detective),
a beautiful woman who
either coerces the male
lead into committing
murder for her or is a
killer herself (a
“femme
fataleâ€), and a
twisting, turning plot
line that involves one or
more homicides.
Additionally, there are
several visual elements
that these movies share:
many are shot in black
and white, with great
emphasis on the use of
shadows and light;
alcohol and cigarettes
are heavily consumed by
men and women alike; and
men typically wear trench
coats and fedoras. Most
of the story lines do not
have happy endings.
Examples of film noir
include Orson
Welles’ The Lady
from Shanghai, Billy
Wilder’s Double
Indemnity, and John
Huston’s The
Maltese Falcon.NOIR
VIGNETTES consists of
four movements, each
depicting a different
aspect of film noir:
Murder at Midnight,
Loaded Gun, Femme Fatale,
and Last Cigarette.This
piece was commissioned by
the University of
Illinois Research Board
on behalf of double
bassist Michael Cameron;
and it also published for

After the
great success of his
first Piano Trio in d
minor op. 49, some five
years passed before
Mendelssohn set to work
on a new composition for
this formation. But then
the c-minor Trio came
into being in a
relatively short period
in March/April 1845 and
was published around a
year later. Much more
sombre in character than
the sibling work, this
second trio is also
considered much more
difficult in terms of
technique (above all in
the piano part). Thus, it
has always stood somewhat
in the shadow of the
earlier trio. However,
chamber music aficionados
generally regard it as
the more mature and
challenging work in terms
of compositional
technique. The trio,
taken from the volume
Mendelssohn • Piano
Trios HN 957, is now
available from Henle for
the first time also as a
practical single
edition.

Mustonen
belongs to the young
generation of composing
piano virtuosos. What is
remarkable is that 'his
instrument' is not placed
in the foreground of his
works. He rather composed
pieces for strings,
sonatas with piano
accompaniment, orchestral
works and even a piece
for guitar referring to
the history of his home
country Finland.The cello
sonata was premiered by
Mustonen with the cellist
Daniel Muller-Schott in
Hamburg. No special
emphasis is given to
polyphonic coexistence;
instead, the piano,
playing chordally, acts
as a real accompaniment
most of the time.
Cantilenas of the cello,
tricky rhythms, and
almost symphonic sound
eruptions make the piece
a sure-fire hit with the
public.

It is thus somewhat

Urtext edition is based

premiere. After its
publication, more years
elapsed before the world
premiere. It was only
towards the end of the
19th century that
Schumann's Cello Concerto
finally made its
breakthrough as a
repertoire piece. The
Urtext edition is based
on the original print of
the parts and the piano
reduction, which had
still been supervised by
Schumann. In addition,
the autograph of the
score was consulted for
purposes of comparison.
The internationally
renowned soloist Heinrich
Schiff took part in the
preparation of the
edition for violoncello
and piano. His
experiences have been
incorporated into his
arrangement of the solo
part. With his comments,
Schiff also provides
valuable tips on the
interpretation of the
work.

Joachim
Raff's celebrated first
cello concerto is only
gradually being
rediscovered today. This
is astounding, taking
into account both the
quality of the
composition as well as
its enthusiastic
reception in the past.
All renowned cellists of
the time performed the
work, but the history of
op. 193 is still more
closely linked to
Friedrich Grutzmacher,
its commissioner,
co-editor, and soloist in
its world premiere, than
to any other musician.
Grutzmachers wish for a
concerto to free us poor
cellists from our
situation that is
becoming truly unbearable
and driving us to the
utmost discontent was
certainly fulfilled by
Raff.The extensive
preface of this first
Urtext-Edition documents
the close collaboration
between composer and
interpreter, as well as
performance practice of
the time. The
corresponding piano
reduction includes not
only an Urtext-solo part,
but also a part with the
markings by the Zurich
cellist Jonas Kreienbuhl.

Robert
Schumann's Violoncello
Concerto op. 129 can be
regarded as the first
great concerto for this
instrument's repertoire.
It is thus somewhat
surprising that this work
had an extremely
problematic reception
history at the
outset.Schumann wrote the
score in 1850, during his
Dusseldorf years, but
there was neither a
concrete occasion nor a
soloist for a world
premiere. After its

Aside from the Piano
Quartet op. 13 and the
Violin Sonata op. 18, the
Cello Sonata numbers
among the most mature
works of chamber music
from Strauss' early
oeuvre. The influences of
Mendelssohn, Schumann,
and Brahms are
noticeable, while leaving
sufficient space for a
very personal tonal
language, often with
surprising rhythmic and
harmonic turns of phrase.
Strauss subjected the
first version completed
in early 1881 to a
radical revision over the
winter of 1882/83; the
opening movement was
thoroughly reworked, the
two subsequent movements
rewritten completely. It
was worth it, because
after the premiere in
Dresden, the composer
wrote to his mother,
“My sonata garnered
extraordinary acclaim,
the applause was
enormous, congratulations
came to me from all
sides.â€.

The
melodies from George
Gershwin's (1898-1937)
musicals, from 'Porgy and
Bess', from orchestral
pieces like 'Rhapsody in
Blue' or 'An American in
Paris', we all know them!
But the career of the
young musician started as
a pianist in a music
publishing house where he
was to encourage
customers to buy music by
playing it. Soon he began
to compose music himself
and caught the attention
of the Broadway, which
paved the way to his
international career.
Inspired by Frederic
Chopin's 24 Preludes, he
began to write his own
'Preludes' for the piano
in the mid-1920s: Of the
five preludes composed by
him, he used two for the
violin composition 'Short
Story' and presented the
other three at a concert
on 4 December 1926. These
'Preludes' combine
classical moments and
jazz elements into an
effective whole and can
be played individually or
as a little jazz sonata
(fast - slow - fast).
Thanks to the present
arrangement, the charming
miniatures are now
available in a version
for solo instrument and
piano accompaniment.
