The source of this publication was issued in London in 1745 by John Walsh Jr. Walsh s publication contains six four-movement works, originally written for violin, solo cello, a keyboard instrument and a second cello to reinforce the bass of the latter, but the role of the violin is insignificant, so these works can be regarded as pieces for cello. Of the six works, the arranger of the volume was publishing the three most suitable ones to that as cello concertos the piano part incorporates both the violin interludes and the continuo. In the cello part higher positions do occur, but they do not necessarily require use of the thumb they are playable after 4-5 years intensivestudy of the instrument.

The three pieces From Jewish Life were composed by Swiss-American composer Ernest Bloch in 1924, the same year he took U.S. citizenship. Though clearly inspired and influenced by Jewish experience, they are purely concert pieces, and do not provide any specific liturgical significance.

The first movement, Prayer, is a deeply heartfelt plea to the almighty. As Neil W Levin writes, The initial four-note motive in the minor mode, together with its elaboration in the ensuing phrases, sounds as if it might have served as the skeletal model for Max Janowski's (1912-1991) now well-known setting of the High Holyday prayer Avinu Malkenu. This prayer has special meaning in my own spiritual life, as I have been singing it since my childhood. Both Prayer and Janowski's Avinu Malkenu are cantorial in nature, to be sung with heartfelt pathos.

The second movement, Supplication (the act of begging humbly), has more angst, almost a sense of urgency as a result of the rhythmic motor in the piano. The third movement, Jewish Song, evokes a quintessentially Eastern-European melancholy. Its falling motives with bent intonation might represent the pain of the Jewish experience.

The works were dedicated to Dutch-American cellist Hans Kindler, a highly influential musician of his time, and founder of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. Mr. Kindler was the soloist for the world premiere of Bloch's most celebrated work, Schelomo in 1917.

Though the popularity of Bloch's oeuvre has been dominated by works of Jewish connection, we should not forget that Bloch had many other stylistic periods, including Franco-Belgian, modal, serial, and even American folk. In 1927, he was awarded Musical America's composition prize in a unanimous vote, despite being regarded as an outsider by American music writers at the time. His winning work America (1928) was performed by every major orchestra and conductor in the following seasons. May we be proud of his contributions to American music.

Sonata for cello and piano was written between September and October of 2010. It is made up of three movements, each of which has unique characteristics. The first, Allegro appassionato, is monothematic, although the theme itself is presented in several ways. Following a vigorous start featuring cello cadenza, the movement is developed with a lively feel, alternating lyrical fragments with other energetic ones. Its conclusion is resounding.
Meanwhile, the second movement, Quasi un lamento, is introspective and fragile. A long melody is sustained by a delicate and transparent piano accompaniment, evoking once again the theme of the first movement and concluding with a Lento of descending piano harmonies while the cello follows, in octaves, with heartfelt glissando.

The third movement, Scherzando-Allegro, is a light-hearted game between the piano and the cello. The main theme is repeated once again, this time with a binary time signature. The cello uses ricochet (the rebounding of notes in a bow stroke), as well as natural and artificial harmonies in quick time. The piano part unfolds completely naturally, excluding any gratuitous artifice.

The piece lasts approximately 20 minutes.

A special piece - a special story: In 2020, a renowned architect approached a composer to create a new piece of music for his daughter's wedding, which the happy father could give to the young couple as a wedding present. In earlier eras of private patronage, such a story would have been natural, but in the 21st century it is an odd story. The composition subtly alludes to the occasion: against the background of the piano, a duet of two instruments tells the story of a serene love (the piece can either be performed with a bassoon and a violoncello, or with two violoncellos). Mate Bella, who moves at home among different musical styles, shapes the song of lovers longing for each other in a way reminiscent of barcarolas sung by Venetian gondoliers.

The opening line is used once again as a transition between the verses. The previously mentioned lines, O sweet everlasting voices, are overlapped as different layers of voices enter and sustain. A fifth and sixth voice, the cello and piano accompaniment take part in these layers as well. The words be still are very much a part of the mood each time as the everlasting voices become quiet and still. The two verses feature different voices within the SSAA choir. Verse 1, the sopranos, and verse 2 the altos. There are many moments in this piece to explore the full range and color of the SSAA choir. The piano and cello play an important part throughout, making this piece an excellent choice for any festival women's chorus.

Not many people know that Franz Liszt arranged some of his piano pieces for the cello, with piano accompaniment, and that these versions of the works appeared in print during the maestro's lifetime. Árpád Pejtsik selected two of these for this volume compiled to mark Liszt's jubilee: Elegies I and II. The other compositions by Liszt that appear in the collection were likewise originally works for piano: the Ave Maria and Cantique d'amour (pieces from the Harmonies poétiques et religieuses cycle) were transcribed by a pupil of Liszt, Robert Pflughaupt the cello version, transposed into G major, of the E Major Consolation is by Jules de Swert, solo cellist in the Weimar orchestraof those days that of the Angelus (the opening piece in Volume 3 of the cycle entitled Years of Pilgrimage ) is by Lothar Windsperger, a German composer who lived at the turn of the 19th-20th century. The Valse oubliée No. 1 was transcribed by Liszt s virtuoso piano pupil Ferruccio Busoni Notturno, which became famous as the third piece in the Liebesträume series, is a transposed version of the original song ( O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst ) made by the editor of this volume.

The film noir genre of 1940s cinema typically includes a strong but flawed male lead (often a detective), a beautiful woman who coerces the male into committing murder or is a killer herself (a “femme fatale”), and a twisting plot line that involves one or more homicides. These movies typically are shot in black and white, with emphasis on shadows and light, alcohol and cigarettes, trench coats and fedoras. Most of the story lines do not have happy endings. Inspired by this genre, NOIR VIGNETTES consists of four movements, each depicting an aspect of film noir: Murder at Midnight, Loaded Gun, Femme Fatale, and Last Cigarette.

These movies were dark, moody, and pessimistic, reflecting the agitation and anxiety present in society following World War II. On The Fiddle consists of three pieces derived from scores to three Peter Greenaway films. The first piece Full Fathom Five, is a version of the Shakespeare song setting made for Prospero's Books (1990). The second Angelfish Decay, is an arrangement of an arrangement: the music for the speeded up time lapse decaying animal sequences in A Zed And Two Noughts (1985) was written for two violins and a harpsichord. This was subsequently 'reduced' to a violin solo for Zoo Caprices (1986). For On The Fiddle a piano part has been added. The final piece Miserere Paraphrase, was written for use in The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover (1989), and is a transcription of Nyman's setting of the 'Miserere' text (Psalm 51) sung in the film by a boy soprano and mixed chorus. The arranger of this work (a well-known Hungarian composer living in Romania) writes: +This piece has always excited my imagination, from several points of view. First of all, its name. The German title, the obstinate one, may refer to its ostinato character. This is close to Liszt's programme concept, but the French word 'obstine' is closer in meaning to stubborn. There is just a shade of difference, but to me it is important, because the latter suggests the description of a type of behaviour, the emotional state of a dancer's inner frame of mind abstracted into movements, expressed in dance movements, and this is a fascinating interpretation. The demonstration of stubborn resistance and defiance to the point of exhaustion was not a frequently occurring phenomenon with Liszt. Secondly, at the beginning of the seventies Zoltan Kocsis played the piece in Transylvania. At that time, I asked the composer, +Is the character of the continuous staccato in the left hand sharp, short, or an accompanying background like a constant shadow? Is it a weighty Brahmsian staccato, an ominous knocking? - and so on. Then there are the Bartokian false relations that keep recurring in the work, the B-E flat-G, etc. That foreshadows Debussy, creating harmonic thrills that, when I hear the work, keep my continuing interest alive for it. Finally, my immediate reason for arranging the work was of a family nature: in connection with Liszt's jubilee year, my daughter, who is a cellist, wanted a 'more energetic' piece to play at a bicentenary concert an addition to the existing slow, lyrical, or sombre works written by Liszt for the cello.+.

After the great success of his first Piano Trio in d minor op. 49, some five years passed before Mendelssohn set to work on a new composition for this formation. But then the c-minor Trio came into being in a relatively short period in March/April 1845 and was published around a year later. Much more sombre in character than the sibling work, this second trio is also considered much more difficult in terms of technique (above all in the piano part). Thus, it has always stood somewhat in the shadow of the earlier trio. However, chamber music aficionados generally regard it as the more mature and challenging work in terms of compositional technique. There are many composers about whom it is believed, today, that they composed conservatively, or against the taste of their time. The question is also raised, today, which extract of this large amount of effective and high-quality music, unknown for the most part, should receive our attention; which of it is worth rediscovering or re-editing. Camillo Schumann is one of the most important representatives of these composers, but his works are still largely unknown today. He was born on 10 March 1872 in Konigstein, Saxony. His musical language combines the sound world of Brahms with the grand, late-romantic Liszt School. He wrote piano parts of incredible power and virtuosity, approaching the sounds of Rachmaninoff. His wonderfully individual melodic language makes these works a valuable testimony to a composer who never had his due recognition. The cello sonatas Opp. 59 (EB 32082) and 99 (EB 32083) are the first of three works for this combination. Op. 59 was composed around 1905/06, Op. 99 followed in 1932. Nothing is known so far of the circumstances of the composition of this work, including for whom it was composed. However, it is quite evident that Schumann wrote it, like most of his works, primarily for his own concerts and befriended musicians. The extensive entries in the piano part bear witness to a considerably practical approach. Crossed-out bars, notes added or crossed out in chords as well as a number of revisions of other kinds are more the rule than the exception. The composer's own fingerings written in the piano part also underline this assumption. The present edition contains two solo-parts each. One clean Urtext-part free of any additions from the editor and a second one with bowing marks and fingerings by Maria Kliegel who recorded both sonatas for the first time with the label Naxos. Both sonatas show evident resemblance to the works of this combination by Johannes Brahms and are therefore a must have for ambitious cellists.
