March 28, 2018This work
(A Breath of the
Untimely) was first
written for solo Flute
and dedicated to Aurele
Nicolet. Its bears the
subtitle Lament on the
Loss of Musical Thought -
some Madrigals for Solo
Flute or Flute with any
other Instruments. This
serves as a playing
instruction but doubles
at the same time as an
outmoded programme: it
refers back to the
musical origin of the
opening lamenting motif,
a tradition which was
once of its time but is
not of our time - namely
the Lamento genre which
gave the title to the
Chaconne in Purcell's
opera Dido and Aeneas.
Almost simultaneously I
wrote a second version
for Piano (for Piano
one-and-a-half hands),
which already formulates
possible approaches for
the performer, in some
detail, to the indicated,
quasi-canonic version of
the piece in the
programme. The multiple
version Ein Hauch von
Unzeit III realizes a
concrete version of a
formal state which floats
between strict canon and
aleatoric principles:
each of the musicians who
are spread throughout the
hall introduces their own
idiomatic translation of
the flute part. And so
the music exists,
omnipresent, not only
spatially throughout the
hall, but also formally
in a sort of fluctuating
simultaneity. For that
reason, it was my express
wish to any potential
interpreter that they
should construct entirely
their own version of the
piece. A healthy number
of musicians have
responded to my
suggestion - versions of
the piece have now been
made for guitar
(Cornelius Schwehr,
Gunther Schneider),
accordion (Hugo Noth),
double bass (Fernando
Grillo), violin
(Hansheinz Schneeberger),
viola, violoncello, and
double bass (trio basso,
Koln), violoncello
(Michael Bach), trombone
(Andrew Digby) and,
created by myself, a sung
version for voice (to
words by Georg Wilhelm
Friedrich Hegel und Max
Bense), and for viola.The
most important
requirement for the whole
piece is absolute
stillness, which should
as far as possible
emanate from the
performer. The pauses are
occasionally in this
respect the most
important element. These
may, if one can find the
necessary stillness,
become very long.Ein

Die
Form der Komposition ist
dem Weg eines Gedankens
vergleichbar, der
unvermittelt Neues ebenso
enthalten kann wie
Ruckbezuge und
Erinnerungen und dessen
zeitlicher Verlauf keiner
ausseren Logik folgt.
Dennoch gibt es ein Netz
von inneren Beziehungen
zwischen einer Vielzahl
von Elementen, die
permanent erscheinen,
verschwinden, sich
verwandeln und
verschmelzen; ein
Prozess, der sich in der
Vielschichtigkeit von
Klangereignissen des
Instruments
widerspiegelt.
Gleichzeitig tendiert die
Form der internen
Zersplitterung
gelegentlich zur
Selbstauflosung. Zwei
eingeschobene
Spiegelkanons lassen die
Klange zu Linien werden
und die Zeit zum
richtungslosen Raum. Doch
auch sie bleiben fluchtig
und werden gebunden an
die Form, die aus dem
Spiel von Gedanken
besteht, wie auch aus
ihrem Vergessen. (Isabel

Immer
wieder stelle ich beim
Horen und beim Beobachten
von Horhaltungen in
Proben und Konzerten
fest, dass wir uns im
Zeitalter der Medien so
an das Horen uber
Lautsprecher
(Schallplatte, CD, Video,
Radio, Fernsehen etc.)
gewohnt haben, dass durch
die Alltaglichkeit
solcher Klangbilder das
Empfinden fur die
Qualitat RAUM fast
verkummert ist.
Lautsprecher simulieren
RAUM bereits in ihrer
Sende-Information. Ihre
Fahigkeit, Raumlichkeit
aus dem realen RAUM, in
den sie ihren Klang
abstrahlen, zu gewinnen,
ist dagegen ausserst
gering. Umgekehrt scheint
es in der Natur des
Instrumentalklangs zu
liegen, vollkommen im
RAUM aufgehen zu konnen,
gerade in ihm das Neue,
Einmalige seines Klingens
zu finden und mit ihm
erst das Klangleben
aufbauen zu mussen. Im
Prozess des ,,..... in
die Stille-Gehens hat der
Cellist Tone und Klange
zu realisieren, die bis
zum siebenfachen Piano
reichen. Dies sollen
jedoch keine Lautstarken
sein, die eine blosse
Erweiterung der
Lautstarkenskala ins
Unhorbare sind, sondern
eher die Realisierung
einer besonderen Form von
RAUM-KLANG. Die Wirkung
des Instruments als Ort
der Abstrahlung
verringert sich dadurch
zugunsten eines Klangs,
der sozusagen nur noch im
RAUM alleine, wie
,,insistierend, vorhanden
zu sein scheint. Es ist
die schwebende Prasenz
einer
Beinahe-Lautlosigkeit wie
etwa im Goethe-Vers ,,In
allen Wipfeln spurest
du/kaum einen Hauch. Je
lautloser, desto
prasenter! (Nicolaus A.
Huber, 27. Juli 1998)

Songs are
part of the childhood.
This collection aims to
offer a variety of songs
for string ensembles,
such as young string
orchestras or string
classes. Included are
older and newer songs,
songs of various origins,
and songs for different
occasions and with themes
ranging from animals to
seasons and times of day
to tongue-in-cheek scary
subjects.Taking up the
motif of diversity in
their own way, the
six-part arrangements are
not confined to the usual
cadence harmonies and
accompaniment forms,
There is something
special to discover in
each of the songs. Small
vignettes with lyrics to
them are found in the
parts, and can be taken
up in rehearsals and
lessons.The songs begin
with fingering positions
and bowing techniques
that are usually learned
at the beginning of
lessons, then gradually
increase in difficulty,
though the booklet as a
whole is set at the
elementary level.
Suggestions for
improvisation and pieces
for practicing certain
requirements round out
the booklet. Special
emphasis is placed on
playing together - true
to the title: Together on
Strings!
