Written for
Moray Welsh whilst still
an undergraduate at York
University. This piece
was completed in
mid-September. Inspired
by Hermann Hesse's
Steppenwolf. A solo
'cello seemed an
appropriate medium for
music which might explore
the character of Harry
Haller, with his desire
for bourgeois comfort and
his strong misanthropic
and suicidal tendencies.
The opening theme
attempts to express this
- melancholy, nostalgic,
a bit Biedermeyer (cf.
Brahms Intermezzi). The
basic theme of the book,
at its simplest, is that
every human personality
consists of hundred of
different personalities -
within every man there
lurks a wolf. Accordingly
the tendency of my piece
is for all its musical
material to become
distorted, either by
thematic transformation
or by changes of timbre.
There are three movements
played without a break.
The first is a character
portrait of the
Steppenwolf. The second
is concerned in the most
general sort of way with
the dance elements in the
novel - Harry's being
taught to dance and
appreciate low 'popular'
music - a tango is
recapitulated in a waltz
and 'Yearning', a popular
song of the time (1927)
is hinted at. The third
movement concerns the
Masked Ball and the Magic
Theatre. Mozart is one of
Hesse's great loves and
he is repeatedly
mentioned in the book.
Inevitably some Mozart
quotes have been worked
in, the most significant
being a reference to The
Magic Flute 'fire and
water' flute theme in the
middle of the second
movement. Long before I
finished the piece, I was
disenchanted with the
work of Hesse. Much of
Steppenwolf I now find
rather embarrassing and
the claims currently made
for Hesse's greatness
seem to me exaggerated.
Since my piece is in no
important sense
programmatically
specific, this change of
heart doesn't really
matter. ~ David
Blake.

We all
agree that scales are a
basis for learning cello
technique, which is why
we include scales in our
teaching. The trick of
course, is how to
integrate scales into the
learning process so that
at the moment the
repertoire demands the
technique, the fingers
are able to respond. All
too often scales are
divorced from their
musical environment or
teachers are compelled to
cut and paste from
traditional scale books
to try to match technique
and learning. Here, in
this new series, Scale
Builder Orfilia Saiz Vega
meticulously matches
scale development to the
appropriate level of
technique. Through this,
the patterns and rhythms
expected of the student
at their level of musical
competence are precisely
those practised.
Moreover, the skilful
integration of bowing and
other techniques specific
to the instrument mean
that acquiring the scales
across a whole range of
technical devices means
that when they appear in
the music they are
expected to play,
teachers can concentrate
on the musical elements
safe in the knowledge
that the technique is
secure. Great
musicians are formed from
early age. We finally
have this gradual,
attractive and adapted
system of scales to start
building student's
technique, which will be
at the service of their
artistry in the future. I

Preface: Talle,
Andrew.
When we
think of the cello, we
automatically think of
Bach’s immortal
cello suites. They are
the very core of cello
literature, their
timeless beauty
accompanying cellists
from their student years
throughout the height of
their professional
careers.
Consideri
ng the works’
significance, the great
number of editions in
existence is not
surprising. However, the
composer’s
autograph has not been
preserved and is
considered lost. This
circumstance creates an
exceptional challenge
many editors faced over
the years. The four
autograph sources still
in existence and the
first print from 1824
show numerous small
deviations, especially in
terms of articulation
markings and
phrasing.
In this
two-volume edition of
Bach’s cello
suites, Andrew Talle now
presents an entirely new
view of the relationships
between existing sources.
The first volume contains
the edited musical text,
which comes as close to
the composer’s
original intention as the
surviving source material
allows: “This
edition does not
constitute a perfect
reconstruction of the
lost autograph; that is
something no editor could
claim to accomplish.
Instead, I have attempted
to supply musicians and
researchers with a
reliable version of the
surviving musical text of
the six cello suites, and
to convey a sense of the
many possibilities Bach
encouraged his musicians
to explore.â€The
second volume presents,
for the first time,
synoptically arranged
facsimiles of the
handwritten sources as
well as the first print
(with Suite No. V also
including Bach’s
own arrangement for
lute), allowing readers
to compare any specific
section in all sources at
one glance. This allows
for a straightforward and
immediate consideration
of all sources, making
editorial decisions
transparent and
self-evident.
Andr
ew Talle’s edition
is supplemented by a
comprehensive discussion
of the instrument for
which the suites were
created, as well as
information regarding
musical interpretation
during Bach’s
time.

The
sound of the cello in
this piece should be
foggy like voice of Ella
Fitzgerald. Sweet, smooth
and pleasant, but at the
same time slightly
hoarse, rustle, dirty.
There are almost only
natural harmonics; either
single, or in chords
(triple-stops) including
two natural harmonics, or
double-stops of two
harmonics. All should be
played flautando, sul
tasto and molto lasciar
vibrare. Flautando and
sul tasto should serve in
search for the foggy
color - harmonics should
speak less clear than
normally, but more smooth
and decent.(Martin
Smolka) ,Like Ella' would
be suited to a player of
a high standard as many
harmonics are in higher
positions and played as
triple-stops. I would
recommend ,Like Ella' to
an advanced cellist
seeking to learn a piece
of modern music to add to

Robert
Lindley
(1776–1855) was
the premier cellist in
England for more than 50
years. In 1822 he became
the first professor of
cello at the Royal
Academy of Music in
London, where he remained
until his retirement in
1851. Lindley, an
esteemed and much
sought-after teacher,
wrote not only the
present
“Capricciosâ€
but also a cello method,
several concertos, and
chamber music in which
the cello is prominently
featured.
The
“Capriccios and
Exercises†contain
a multitude of fingering
patterns in related major
and minor harmonies,
exercises for the thumb
position and many
passages of double stops,
all within a melodious
framework.
Barenreiter’s
scholarly performing
edition is edited by
Valerie Walden, offering
cellists and teachers
outstanding new material
for use in
lessons.

“Gor
don Wright was the friend
of a lifetime. For thirty
years Gordon and I shared
our two greatest
passions: music and
Alaska. Gordon was my
musical collaborator, my
next-door neighbor, my
fellow environmentalist
and my camping buddy.
These miniatures are
musical sketches of three
moments and places in our
friendship. Like Alaska,
Gordon was larger than
life. He always lived his
own way. And he died just
as he would have wanted.
We found him lying on the
deck of his cabin in the
Chugach Mountains, curled
up against his favorite
birch tree, looking
across the waters of
Turnagain Arm toward the
Resurrection Valley and
the tiny settlement of
Hope.” - John
Luther Adams
This
music contains no normal
stopped tones. All the
sounds are produced as
natural harmonics or on
open strings. There are
no harmonics higher than
the sixth. So these
sounds should be clear
and resonant. Even so,
balancing the harmonics
with the open strings
requires careful
attention.
The
durations of the
individual pieces are
given at the end of
each.
The total
duration of the set is
about ten minutes.

“Now
II†is the second
part of a triptych of
chamber pieces entitled
“Profiles of
Lightâ€. The first
part is written for solo
piano (Now I, BA 11073),
the second for
unaccompanied cello. The
two instruments are then
combined in the
concluding third part,
Uriel (BA
11013).
All three
pieces were inspired by
the Abstract
Expressionist paintings
of the American artist
Barnett Newman. Newman's
work has had a formative
impact on Matthias
Pintscher's artistic
philosophy: what does it
mean to reduce things to
essentials while seeking
maximum immediacy of
expression? Several of
Newman's paintings have a
radiant light of uncommon
intensity, yet resembling
a dark illumination. The
same sort of thing is
found in the late works
of Franz Schubert, where
a comparable profundity
and retrospective
yearning likewise shine
through the surface of
even the brightest
tonalities.
This
is a piece about
resonances, about the
inward and outward givens
of existence, about life
itself: 'I find the cello
a highly suitable
instrument for depicting
such existential
conditions'.
