The Bluesier Side of Jazz for Tenor Saxophone and Bb instruments by Andrew D. Gordon and Frank Villafranca was inspired by the piano students he teaches at Shepherd University School of Music in Los Angeles and is dedicated to those students: Jungwon, Yumiko, Yoko, Eunice, Sooji, Hae Ji and Ok Kyu. As with many students that come from a classical background it is a difficult transition to learn to play Blues & Jazz. When a musician improvises they usually play a variety of riffs or phrases that they have developed and learnt over a period of time and can access these phrases instantaneously whatever key they are playing in to create a seamless improvisedsolo from the phrases they have learnt. Andrew's idea for this book is to create phrases or riffs over two measures of various Blues progressions. He sub-divided each of the 12 Bar Blues progressions used in this book (the chord progression for Watermelon Man is a 16 measure progression) into six sections (two measures each) and within each of the six sections created four different phrases or riffs so that the student has a choice of four different phrases to play over every two measures. They can then create a solo based on which phrase they choose for each two measures. Especially important in this context are the years 1773 and 1775, which witnessed the creation of the five concertos for Violin and Orchestra as well as several single movements for the same scoring. The reasons for this flourish of activity in this domain lie partly in the fact that Mozart, who still occupied the post of concertmaster to the Prince-Archbishop, was either obliged or inspired to provide such works for special occasions during this long period spent in Salzburg. But another reason was certainly the possibility of experimenting withall the new compositional techniques acquired during his third trip to Italy and his stay of several months in Vienna from July to September 1773. The book comes with a CD and the guitar and mandolin are on separate tracks. You can turn the mandolin totally off and play with the CD. There are two measures of intro with the guitar, so you can sit and listen to the CD and become familiar with the sounds of the pieces without it sounding like a learning CD. There arechords with the music and at the end of the book, there are examples of what the guitar is doing for many of the tunes in both tablature and notation. These tunes sound terrific, and are a great addition to any repertoire. You can use them for any kind of gig, or you can try doing some medieval fairs, medieval feasts or medieval weddings. The bowl back mandolin looks so much like the lute, most people would never know the difference. Allan the author plays the lute, guitar and more recently mandolin and has a wealth of knowledge about the music. These pieces are particulary suited for the sound of the mandolin. For the solo the name 'le sexe du noyé' was intended, and the few measures of sexe-tuor were my first attempt to compose a piece in which more complex rhythms would result in a kind of proportional multiplication of individual fragments from the sextet [hence the French sextuor] le retour du noyé. This proved to be monstrously complicated and absurd. Thus, the ten measures of the «sexe-tuor» fragment represent a capitulation in the face of these complications, presented as the interruption of an immovable column of air in a frozen multiphonic sound. In the event, the solution to the problemwas quite simple: Beginning with the composition of le sexe du noyé the proportionalities of the pitch levels and rhythmic values revealed significant rhythmic possibilities. sexe-tuor remains as it is: a solo piece that can function in another compositional context, as an intermezzo between other, larger works on a concert program. As was customary at the time, a short ballet sequence was composed for the opera, to be inserted into Act III, just prior to the entrace of Lodovico, ambassador to the Venetian Republic. When Verdi sent the original manuscript to his publisher Ricordi, he included this detailed description of the scenario: 'Looking at the splendid, colonnaded scene of the Third Act, I decided to make the music go as follows: At the very beginning, to the sound of horns, a group of Turkish slave-girls dance with reluctance and ill-humor because of the very fact they are slaves. Then, hearing the strains of the Arab Song, they grow livelier and at the end dance quite wildly... At the Invocation to Allah, they all fall to the ground... Just then a group of beautiful Greek girls appears among the columns, and four measures later another similar group; at the thirteenth measure these two groups join in a quiet, aristocratic, classical dance. The next motif is that of La Muranese, which heralds the appearance of a 'group' (!) of Venetians... Eight measures later, another group of Venetians enters and at the eighteenth measure (fortissimo) these two groups meet and dance at the front of the stage. After the fortissimo there is a passage of very light music in F-sharp, which should be danced by couples. This motif is repeated, louder, and then all the Venetians dance together. The 6/8 motif reappears, and here I should like to see another group of Venetians come forward. The War Song should be danced by men alone. At the recurrence of the first motif, all the Venetians dance again, then at the più mosso, Venetians, Turks, Greeks, and the rest all dance together... You can get the book with a CD and the guitar and mandolin are separate tracks. You can turn the mandolin totally off and play with the cd. There is no 'Tick Tick' before the pieces, instead there are two measures of intro with the guitar, so you can sit and listen to the CD and become familiar with the pieces without it sounding like a learning CD. There are chords with the music and at the end of thebook, there are examples of what the guitar is doing for many of the tunes in both tablature and notation. These tunes sound terrific, and are a great addition to any repertoire. You can use them for any kind of gig, or you can try doing some medieval fairs, medieval feasts or medieval weddings. The bowl back mandolin looks so much like the lute, most people would never know the difference. Often when I play the lute, they ask me if it's a mandolin. For the solo the name 'le sexe du noyé' was intended, and the few measures of sexe-tuor were my first attempt to compose a piece in which more complex rhythms would result in a kind of proportional multiplication of individual fragments from the sextet [hence the French sextuor] le retour du noyé. This proved to be monstrously complicated and absurd. Thus, the ten measures of the «sexe-tuor» fragment represent a capitulation in the face of these complications, presented as the interruption of an immovable column of air in a frozen multiphonic sound. In the event, the solution to the problemwas quite simple: Beginning with the composition of le sexe du noyé the proportionalities of the pitch levels and rhythmic values revealed significant rhythmic possibilities. sexe-tuor remains as it is: a solo piece that can function in another compositional context, as an intermezzo between other, larger works on a concert program. Par PARRY BEN. This Spiritual Medley comprises three songs that speak of a journey through trial to eventual salvation and liberty. It should gradually gather pace and energy from a slightly more reflective start, though retaining a lively feel throughout. All My Trials developed into a popular protest song in the 1950s and 60s and has been recorded by, amongst others, Joan Baez, Paul McCartney and Elvis Presley. By and By is a more upbeat song with plenty of syncopated rhythms and more forthright dynamics – it should be sung and played with lots of energy. The medley ends with I Want Jesus to Walk With Me, a true ‘pilgrim journey’ full of trials and breaking hearts, but never giving up on hope and final deliverance. The tempo should really pick up for this final section, galvanised by the walking bass line and more jazzy harmonies, and reaching its climax in the final few measures.

We all learned how to play our scales in all 12 keys so I have taken that concept and applied it to learning to play the Blues so that you can try to become equally adept at playing in as many keys as possible. I have heard from teachers who have used my ?100 Ultimate Blues Riffs? book who will only allow a student to move on to the next riff once they have mastered playing the riff they are working on in all 12 keys, certainly a great but challenging musical exercise. Each of the riffs are either 2 or 4 measures in length that are notated and recorded around the cycle of 4th.s Also, there is a notation page whereby the riff is being used in a 12 bar blues progression so that you can see how to apply the riff to a real world situation. Each riff has been recorded 4 times: 1. Piano with rhythm tracks recorded around the cycle of 4th.s 2. Rhythm tracks recorded around the cycle of 4th.s to practice with 3. Piano with rhythm tracks recorded in a 12 bar blues progression in a designated key. 4. Rhythm tracks recorded in a 12 bar blues progression in the same key. Reasons for practicing in all 12 keys. Often a singer cannot reach certain notes in the key that you have learned the song in, therefore you will probably be asked to change the key of the song which you can do with confidence knowing all 12 keys. Having the knowledge of playing in all 12 keys, it will then become easier to learn new songs, whatever key they are in. Blues often use the keys of C, F, G, Bb, Eb, Guitar music often uses the keys of E, A, D, by learning as many keys as possible will enable you to adapt to the musical situation you are playing in. Taking riffs, chord progressions etc. through all 12 keys is a great ear training tool relying on your ears to play in keys that you are not used to before the muscle memory sets in. Practicing in all 12 keys is a great exercise for the brain, it is obviously hard work but the more you do it the benefits will become apparent. By practicing in all 12 keys you will start to see various musical patterns evolve that will help you speed up the process of learning music. Par VAN DER ROOST JAN. This piece was commissioned by the ‘Concert Band Vlamertinge’ and is a plea for peace: the title translates as ‘Peace on Earth’. This is expressed by means of the vocal contribution expected from the performers. In various places of the piece you can recognize, the words ‘Et In Terra Pax’ - an appeal for peace - at first jumbled together but later more rhythmically structured, developing into synchronized massed voices. The work starts with a pentatonic theme based on the notes D, E, G, A and C (taken from ‘ConCErtbAnD VlAmErtinGE’ and the name of the conductor, NiCk VAnDEnDriessChe). A somewhat sad melody is developed during an orchestral climax which leads to the firstexplosion of sound (measure 62 onwards). Suddenly the opening measures are recaptured, albeit with a differently colored sound: the words ‘Et In Terra Pax’ bring the first movement to a close. A restless Allegro follows which abruptly stops and is replaced by a calming cho-rale-like passage. A narrator reads aloud the poem ‘Sonnet’ by the young poet Charles Hamilton Sorley, who was killed during World War I. This poem fittingly puts into words the cruelty and senselessness of war. After the expanded recapitulation of the allegro, the broad, almost infinite atmosphere of the beginning returns. Clarinet and English horn play the pentatonic opening theme once more, this time broadly, while the words ‘Et In Terra. . . Pax’ are repeated again and again by the rest of the orchestra. The composer has purposely avoided all forms of aggression and bombastic sounds regularly used in works about war. Fear of violence and destruction can be heard and felt during the allegro passages.
