Edgar Knecht is a jazz pianist who has created his own unique style. His début CD, 'Good Morning Lilofee? (with four-piece combo), conquered the clubs and earned him invitations to international festivals. His treatment of the original melodies is refreshingly different from standard jazz arrangements: It is characterized by a free perception of the tunes, varied rhythms as well as unconventional harmonies. The same recipe for success underlies his second CD, 'Dance On Deep Waters?, with which the Edgar Knecht Quartet is again going on tour, with many gigs lined up for spring and summer.All eight of the songs in our edition offer agreeable and stimulating literature outside the classical and jazz pigeonholes for pianists everywhere, whether or not they dig German folksongs. The composition is divided into three movements: The Wrigley Building from Dawn to Noon, Blue Silhouette and Cloud Gates, which by sharing the same thematic material arranged in cyclical form, strengthen the overall cohesion of the piece.
The first movement, preceded by a short slow introduction in which the main theme is presented in an almost dreamlike form, metaphorically represents the city at dawn. The sudden change of time symbolizes the start of activities with all its noises and sounds: you can hear the bell that announces the closing of the subway doors, the sound of cars speeding by, the siren of a patrol car.
If the first movement represents the day, the second introduces a nocturnal environment: a melancholic melody played by the English horn anticipates a more animated tempo depicting melodies coming from jazz clubs.
Powerful fanfares that take up the second theme of the first movement introduce the third movement. In this finale, the role of the two themes is reversed compared to the first movement and one takes the place of the other in a kind of games of mirrors.

Par NUORVALA JUHANI. Juhani Nuorvala (b. 1961) wrote The Five Chords That Shook My World (2020) for pianist Nicolas Horvath's Hommage à Glass project and it is dedicated to him. It's a fantasy meditation on the Train/Spaceship chords in Einstein, that repeating five-chord progression (Fm - Db - A - B7 - E) about which the composer has said that there's something strange, because it never fails to lift the audience to its feet. The duration of the piece is c. 6'30'', and it was premiered by Emil Holmström at RUSK festival (Pietarsaari, Finland) 20th November 2020. A notable variety of influences - microtonality, American minimalism, New Romanticism, popular music, techno - has been regarded as a special feature of Nuorvala's idiom. Despite this he is not a collage artist; instead he has blended various ingredients to create a mode of expression entirely his own. Nuorvala's works are often marked with frenzied rhythmic drive. He makes music using elements and materials that both the mind and the body respond to. He finds these elements not only in old or new classical music but in various forms of urban popular music, such as the electronic music of modern dance clubs./ Répertoire / Piano

Par DOBRZYNSKI IGNACY FELIKS. Dobrzynski’s Two Mazurkas are worthy of pianists’ attention. Despite the considerable simplification of means and the use of a conventional form, the composer succeeded in creating miniatures not devoid of charm, elegance and a certain unpretentious freshness. Their performance does not require advanced skill, so they may represent valuable additions to the repertoire for older pupils of primary schools of music, at the same time preparing them to play more difficult nineteenth-century miniatures, including the mazurkas of Chopin. Dobrzynski’s mazurkas are also undoubtedly worth using in piano teaching as an extra or special item on the secondary-school level, in music clubs and in amateur performance. Finally, they may also find a place in cultural, patriotic or occasional events of various kinds as examples of Polish music of the period under the Partitions.
The present edition is based on the first edition from 1868. A few noticeable errors have been corrected. The proposed fingering and pedalling come entirely from the editors, and added performance markings are given in brackets./ Répertoire / Piano

David Patrois est né en 1965, il suit une formation classique de percussions et, tout en jouant de la batterie et des congas dans divers groupes locaux, obtient un premier prix du conservatoire d'Angers en 1986. Il décide alors de se consacrer entièrement au vibraphone. A Paris, il étudie avec François JEANNEAU, David FRIEDMAN et obtient en 1987 une bourse du ministère de la culture pour étudier avec Gary BURTON à la BERKLEE SCHOOL OF MUSIC aux Etats Unis.
De retour en France en 1989, il monte un quartet avec David CHEVALLIER (lauréat au concours de La Défense 89), fonde avec Eric LOHRER le groupe OPEN AIR (2 CD en 1991 et 92), puis 'TRIO PATROIS' avec Christophe WALLEMME et Christophe MARGUET (Premier prix au concours Jazz et Polard 91) qui deviendra un quartet avec Eric BARRET, participe au quartet d'Olivier KER OURIO (Premier prix au concours de La Défense 93), joue régulièrement avec Aldo ROMANO, Michel BENITA, François VERLY, Nelson VERAS, Louis WINSBERG, Tony RABESON, Denis LELOUP, Philippe MACE et plus occasionnellement avec, Bojan Z, Hervé SELLIN, François JEANNEAU, Malo VALOIS, Glenn FERRIS, le POM, Bernard LUBAT, Emmanuel BEX, Louis SCLAVIS, Simon GOUBERT...
Entre 1995 et 1999, il se produit en quintet et enregistre son premier CD sous son nom en 1997 : ' Attraper le temps ', avec Sylvain BEUF, Frédéric FAVAREL, Christophe WALLEMME et Benjamin HENOCQ. En 1998, à la suite d'une commande de Radio France dans le cadre du festival Présences 98, il fonde le groupe ' Another Trio ', d'inspiration ouvertement africaine, avec Jean Jacques AVENEL à la contrebasse et à la kora et Pierre MARCAULT aux percussions, et se produit dans de nombreux clubs et festivals (CD paru chez RDC Records en octobre 2000). En 2002, en compagnie du violoniste Pierre BLANCHARD, il est le soliste principal d'une création pour le Festival ' swing de mars ' en Eure et Loir réunissant un quartet de jazz et orchestre à cordes (11 musiciens).
Depuis 2003, il est membre du ' 360o Degrés Project ' réunissant Mark TURNER, Ravi COLTRANE, Olivier GATTO et Benjamin HENOCQ. Son dernier projet privilégie toujours le son acoustique avec la présence de Jean-Charles RICHARD, Luc ISENMANN, Sébastien LLADO et Pierre DURAND.
