The form of this work is not so much based on the classical symphony, but is closer to a song cycle structure which has now grown to include 13 movements for choir and orchestra. The Romantic characteristics and form of the 8th Symphony are both reminiscent of Gustav Mahler’s choral symphonic works and his Lied von der Erde. Krzysztof Penderecki here extends and augments his expressive musical material, for example through cluster techniques and glissandi, possibilities which he has been systematically exploring since the 1950s. All works are arranged for SATB Choir. James Whitbourn has become renowned throughout the world for his acclaimed compositions and settings of numerous texts. He has been described as truly original and an innovator of contemporary British choral music, collaborating with people like Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Choir of King's College, Cambridge. The former appears here, as A Prayer Of Desmond Tutu, a setting of one of the Archbishop's prayers. His arrangements and compositions for the King's College Choir have been universally critically acclaimed, with A Great And Mighty Wonder, Nunc Dimittis and Were You There? representing these hugely popular collaborations. Whitbourn has also had a very close relationship with the BBC since his beginnings as a composer, working with them on three pieces within The Choral Collection. Many of these pieces are published in Germany for the first time; almost all of them are first published as choral arrangements. The first volume contains ten sacred and paraliturgical songs that may be sung at various occasions. Among these are the feast of Passover, the “Ten Days of Repentance” in the month of Tishré and the Sabbath. The second volume contains ten secular songs that have become widely known in Israel during the 20th century. These songs are part of Israel’s cultural history and belong to its core repertoire. Romantische Lieder Für Frauenchor und Klavier Nach Den Duetten Von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The music of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy is, for many choirs, an integral part of their repertoire and frequently sung, covering the genres from simple romantic folk song to large-scale oratorio. His music is known by and popular among all types of choral ensembles. And yet, Mendelssohn wrote hardly any works for women's choirs although such ensembles already played a role in the 19th-century choral scene during his lifetime. For the present collection, Pascal Martiné therefore used the artistic trick of arrangement based on Mendelssohn's Gesänge für zwei Frauenstimmen und Klavier to which he added a third female voice. Martiné conceived the added part in such a way that he took the romantic voice leading into account and logically extended Mendelssohn's respective compositional technique.
