Symphony. Yet, his
Fantasy in E flat major
arranged for Cornet or

Saint-Saëns entered
the Paris Conservatoire
at the mere age of
thirteen, where he
studied Organ and
composition. He then went
on to have a successful
career as an organist and
composer, writing his
Fantasy in E flat major
in 1857. The piece was
originally composed for
the Organ, but Henri
Busser (1872-1973)
recognised the work's
significance and arranged
it for Cornet or Trumpet
with Piano accompaniment.
To this day, Fantasy in E
flat major remains
prominent in the advanced
brass player's

When
writing his Concerto No.
1 in A minor, Op. 33,
Camille Saint-Saens
created a 'classic' of
violoncello literature.
But the French musician
even wrote other solo
works for this
instrument: a second
concerto, two sonatas,
the 'Swan' from 'The
Carnival of the Animals'
as well as a 'Suite with
Piano Accompaniment' Op.
16. Premiered on 27 April
1866 and probably written
shortly before, the work
is based on the
composer's study of
tradition, especially of
the form of the Baroque
suite, integrated in a
Romantic tonal language.
Many years later (1919)
the composer also
presented a version with
orchestral instead of
piano accompaniment, and
for this version he
replaced movements 3 and
5 and changed the ending
of the fourth movement.
The present edition
contains the text of the
orchestral version: The
five-movement suite
begins with a prelude
reminiscent of Bach which
is followed by a pleasant
serenade, a stylized
gavotte and a sentimental
romance before a
passionate tarantella
puts a virtuoso end to
the piece. The
enthusiastic, melodic
'Suite' is a valuable
addition to the cello
repertoire, suitable for
both tuition and concert
purposes.

Catholic Church organist
in his early years and
produced a volume of
music that was easy to
sing. Mr. Reynolds
calls this music Church
Polyphonic style that
came out of the late
Renaissance and endured
for a couple centuries
into the Romantic
period. This work
begins with a beautiful
unison chant and moves
into four polyphony
sections concluding with
a soft Amen. The
music is of moderate
difficulty with the first
part in tenor clef.

composer and organist of
the Romantic era. A child
prodigy, giving his first
concert when he was 10
years old, and studying
at the Paris
Conservatoire. He was
then an organist in Paris
for twenty years,
following which he was a
freelance pianist and
composer, popular both in
Europe and America. This
lesser known work is an
arrangement of a
concerto-like piece for
flute and orchestra. In a
loose rondo form, the
main theme is a decorated
scale. Entries of this
theme are interspersed
with long, almost
hymn-like tunes and
florid scale and arpeggio
patterns. The music
passes seamlessly through
several keys exploring
different moods and
aspects of the flute,
reaching a climax almost
two thirds of the way in
to the piece, before a
beautifully calm coda
lets the music float
away. This is a piece
that deserves to be much
better known. As a single
movement solo piece, it's
a great way for a player
to begin to get some
experience at playing in
an ensemble situation.
The solo line is
demanding, but not
excessively so. The
ensemble parts are
generally straight
forward, first flute
needs to be a confidant
strong player.
