for a musical composition
conjures up many
possibilities. It is, in
fact, an imagined line
from an unwritten poem,
invented with the idea of
capturing something of
the visual aura the
sounds and energy of this
work invoke in its
composer' mind. An
omnipotent presence in
all of nature, a source
of life yet also capable
of its destruction, the
sun affects the light and
dark in our physical
existence as it defines
the daily and seasonal
life. The music of this
work, in three
interlocking parts, takes
turns being exuberant,
caressing, scorching,
receding, hazy, lazy,
blazing, dissolving into
darkness, blinding in its
intensity. Subtitled
Concerto da Camera III,
this work is written for
what has become known as
the standard Pierrot
instrumentation of flute,
clarinet, violin, cello,
piano plus percussion.
The difference here is
that the winds are
doubled - the two
flutists alternating with
piccolo and alto flute
and both clarinetists
also doubling on bass
clarinets. The ninth
member of the ensemble, a
soprano saxophone,
appears well into the
piece, its lyrical,
plaintively expressive
quality dominating the
musical terrain for a
while. While occasionally
joining the others for
some tutti outbursts, it
maintains its position as
something of a guest
throughout. Of the
various thematic ideas
that populate this work,
a six-note descending
line played by the
clarinet appearing right
at the work's opening
then arching back up
reveals itself, as the
music unfolds, to be the
principal melodic
building block of Under
the Sun's Gaze. Its
various transformations
include the plaintive
soprano saxophone melody
appearing in the middle
section. Just under 20
minutes in length, the
work in its totality can
be heard as being in a
loose arch form, its
ending receding into a
distant darkening horizon
which carries in it the
seed of the new dawn that
lies beyond. Under the

ensemble’s first
cello, a choice I was
especially grateful for,
not only because it
features Zvi Plesser, the
outstanding Israeli
cellist, but also because
it gave ma an opportunity
to highlight an
instrument for which,
from a very early stage
in my life, I have felt a
special affinity. The
cell’s
“soulâ€, so
naturally combining
passion and lyricism, has
always touched me in a
special way.As sometimes
happens, naming the piece
was the final act in the
process of creation.Â
Once titled, though, I
found myself looking
through the piece with a
mixture of delight and
astonishment – the
narrative of the almost
iconic mythological story
of love and loss seems as
one entirely plausible,
and to my mind
convincing, way to tract
the unfolding of the
musical events. Of
course, the music was
written with no such tale
(or any tale, for that
matter) in mind. But
perhaps some stories are
emblematic of so much
that is part of our lives
and psyches, of our
desires, fears and
wishes. Orpheus,
whose longing for
Eurydice recognizes no
boundaries of heaven and
hell… Love
regained, then forever
lost…Â
Orpheus’ lyre
intoning his sorrowful
yearning…Lyre of
Orpheus, approximately
fifteen minutes in
length, composed in late
2008, is intermittently
songful, caressing,
passionate, pained,
ferocious, longing.Â
The instrumentation
consists of 2 violins, 2
violas, 2 cellos, the
first of which is the
soloist/protagonist, the
second notable for having
its lowest string tuned
down a third to achieve

composer. For soprano
solo and SSA voices,
cello, organ, and
synthesizer, the music
has a light, ethereal
feeling.
“Beati†can
be taken as a sort of
“Blessed are
they†prefix for
the movements which are
not direct quotes from
the Beatitudes. This is
piece is a Latin setting
of Luke 10:33 (“A
certain Samaritan being
on his journey came near
himâ€) and Isaiah
66:13 (“As one whom
the mother caresses, I
will comfort youâ€).
Quick, florid, and
leaping passages begin in
the solo voice as the
chorus comments and then
repeats those passages.
After that the piece is
basically a duet
structure with only two
measures where the

traditional virtuoso
concerto concept: here a
large orchestra engages
in dialogue with a solo
violin. The first
movement is called
Arrivo, “Arrival:
the soloist literally
arrives later, and by
degrees, playing his/her
first two solos offstage.
Even then the orchestra
continues to take the
initiative for a long
time. Not until the
second movement, entitled
Aura, “Air or Wind,
does the initiative pass
to the solo violin as it
sets light to notes in
the orchestra harmony
like individual lamps.
And not until the end of
the second movement and
the beginning of the
third does the solo
violin play completely on
its own. The title of the
first movement,
“Arrival,
underlines the event, the
dramaturgy, whereas that
of the second movement,
“Aura, alludes to
the texture and the
shimmering space. The
third movement is the
most strongly emotional,
as the name Carezza,
“Caress
suggests.

a collection of twelve
miniature pieces for solo
piano, composed in
several stages over a
long period of
time.
Each one of

a different approach to
