potpourri setting that

imagination. In the
evenings after dinner at
Monticello Thomas and
Martha Jefferson enjoyed
nothing better than to
play music. Each was an
accomplished musician.
Jefferson would play the
violin, and Martha would
often accompany him at
the piano. He especially
enjoyed the music of
Corelli. Thomas
Jefferson’s Fiddle
Tunes is an effort to
depict what a musical
evening might have been
at the farm with guests
joining in, clapping,
stomping, or dancing to
the lively tunes. Three
reels of the Colonial
period are featured in
this medley. Jefferson
and Liberty, Smash the
Windows, and The White
Cockade. Each jig is
introduced by a solo
violin then the whole
section joins in.

Moore (1779–1852)
was an Irish poet,
singer, songwriter and
entertainer. In his poem,
On Music, Moore
emphasizes the power that
music has in our lives
and the ability it has to
evoke memories and
feelings from the past.
Music transcends that
which can be spoken or
felt. The beauty of
making music together is
to establish meaningful
connections with others
and to share a common
language through song.We
are reminded, however,
that relationships with
each other can be fluid
or unstable, but as the
words of the poem remind
us, music will not
betray. No matter the
experiences that we face,

School. In July 2014, my
dear friend Kathy Bizarth
commissioned me to
compose a new work
celebrating the tenth
anniversary of the
Masterworks Community
Chorale in Newnan,
Georgia. It was in
September when we agreed

Morley (ca. 1557-1602)
lived in England during
the Elizabethan period.
It was a time during the
reign of Queen Elizabeth
when the arts, and
especially music,
flourished.Morley studied
serious music with
William Byrd and
attempted to compose in
his style while holding
an organ post at St.
Paul's Cathedral. He was
inspired by a new vocal
publication brought to
England from Italy. These
madrigals were where
Morley finally found his
compositional direction.
He took aspects of the
Italian style, which
suited his personality
and anglicized them by
applying the English
language and musical
tradition. His works are
considered to show a
wider variety of
emotional color, form and
technique than other
English composers of this
period.
