was commissioned by
Frederick Grinke and
completed on 20 December
1961. The BBC Symphony
Orchestra with Frederick
Grinke (violin) and
conducted by the
composer, gave the first
performance on 31 July
1962 at the Royal Albert
Hall, London during the
BBC Proms season. This
work is so constructed
that each piece is
complete in itself and
can be played separately,
while at the same time
the whole set of five
constitutes a structural
unit. A basic motif
consisting of a rising
semitone followed by a
falling tone, and its
inversion plays an
important part in every
piece. Thus the first
piece, which is of a slow
and meditative character,
begins with this theme in
the bass. It is also
heard in the first entry
of the solo part, and
thereafter every episode
is in some way derived
from it. The next piece,
a vigorous and strongly
marked 'allegro', uses
the semitone of the
original figure as its
starting point. A second
theme appears, first on
the horns and is later
taken up by the solo
violin, while a third
section has the initial
idea as its
accompaniment. Next comes
an extended scherzo in
free form very closely
based on initial motif.
The fourth is a purely
melodic piece containing
allusions in its middle
section to the basic
figure. Here the strings
only are used for
accompaniment. In the
first section, violas and
cellos are divided in the
middle section, and all
the strings are used in
the last, which is
otherwise an almost exact
repetition of the
opening. The Finale is a
lighter movement than the
others, concerned mainly
with giving the soloist
material for display, but
not unconnected with what

by the life of Florence
Attridge, an Essex woman
who, whilst working at
the Marconi factory in
Chelmsford during WWII,
helped to make secret
radio sets for spys. In
this piece for soprano,
speaker and electronics,
we hear Florence recount
her experiences, whilst,
in another, secret
location, in another
time, a spy goes through
the radio's
(complicated!) set up
instructions one last
time before going on
their first
reconnaissance mission.
The electronic element
takes sounds that are
associated with
Florence's life and the
history of Marconi,
including morse code and
Absent, the first song to
be broadcast from the
factory. The text for
Florence's part was
written by Frances M
Lynch based on research
by Patricia Fara, and the
speakers text comes from
the official manual for
the The British Type 3
Mark II Spy Radio. The
work was commissioned by
electric voice theatre
and first Performed
Online during the
Covid-19 Pandemic, Aug
24th 2020 as part of the
'Echoes from Essex'. The
project was supported by
the Arts Council
Emergency Response Fund
(National Lottery). The

speed music’ and
was commissioned by the
Festival de Lille for the
inauguration of the TGV
North EuropeanParis-Lille
line in 1993. This
piece of sheet music runs
continuously, but was
conceived as an abstract,
imaginary journey; or
rather five
inter-connected journeys,
each ending with a slow,
mainly stepwise melody
which isonly heard in its
'genuine' form when the
piece reaches its
destination.
Thematic
'transformation' is a key
to MGV
as a whole. Throughout
the piece ideas -
rhythmic, melodic,
harmonic, motivic,
textural -constantly
change their identity as
they pass through
different musical
'environments'.
The opening bars
establish both a
recurrent rhythmic
principle - 9, 11, or
13-beat rhythmic cycles
heard against a regular 8
- and aharmonic process -
chord sequences (mainly
over C and E) which have
the note E in common.
(Coincidentally,
MGV
begins in C and ends in
E). A later scalic,
syncopated figure (again
first heard over C, E and
A)begins the second
section, featuring Brass,
in D flat. The
topography of
MGV
should be experienced
without reference to
planning, description or
timetables. Its tempo
changes and unpredictable
slowings downbear no
logical relation to the
high speed of the
Paris-Lille journey,
while the temptation to
treat
MGV as a
concerto grosso, with the
Michael Nyman
band as the ripeno, was
resisted: more suitably
theband (amplified in
live performance) lays
down the tracks on which
MGV

Beethoven's 32 variations
in C Minor. In
Beethoven's work, all the
variations are eight bars
long, without any changes
in tempi or time
signature. Each variation
is complete in itself,
but the variations are
carefully grouped and
juxtaposed to have a
cummalitive effect. His
individual variations are
always very clearly
connected with the
original theme, both
melodically and
harmonically. Rather than
occupying himself solely
with decoration of the
original melody,
Beethoven's concern was
with piano figuration and
technique. In following
the principles Beethoven
created in this work,
Elias has attempted to
concern himself with the
same preoccupations; by
using clealy audible
motifs that permit him to
concentrate on writing
for the instrument, and
by using short, sharply
defined phrases (always

o). Richard Reed Parry is

the lead singer of rock
band Arcade Fire, yet his
foray into classical
music is equally worthy
of attention. Quartet For
Heart And Breath is an
experiment into using the
performers' heartbeats
and breathing to dictate
the tempo. The performers
are instructed to wear
stethoscopes in order to
listen to their
heartbeats closely, while
one complete breath
corresponds to one bar
and two heartbeats equal
two crotchets. The result
is a quiet and subtle
piece, as each instrument
has to play softly so as
to be able to keep in
time. The piece also has
a naturally occurring
dynamism in that the
players' heart rates
constantly change as the
performance goes on, with
each instrument falling
in and out of sync
sometimes culminating in
a beautiful moment of all
heartbeats matching each
other. Interestingly,
this unique aspect means
that no performance will
ever be the same, meaning
to hear or play this
composition will be a
truly once in a lifetime

superbly one-of-a-kind
composition by Richard

Out of the Ruins, for
Agnieszka Piotrowska's
BBC2 documentary which
dealt with the physical
and emotional responses
of some of the
inhabitants of Leninakhan
to the earthquake which
devastated Armenia the
previous December. When
he heard the recording of
the work that I made with
the Holy Echmiadzin
Chorus under the fervent
conducting of Khoren
Meykhanejian, Alex
Balanescu suggested
turning Out of the Ruins
into a string quartet.
There seemed no reason or
opportunity to do this
until I felt the need to
add to the intensity of
my experiences in Armenia
the no less profound
experience of witnessing
the images of the
Romanian revolution on
television during the
latter part of December
1989.Just as the
structure of my Third
String Quartet (1990) may
connect it with the
First, so they also share
a debt to Thurston Dart
(my professor at King's
College, London, between
1961 and 1965). It was
Dart who had the
inspiration to send me to
Romania in 1965,
ostensibly to study folk
music. The volumes of
transcriptions that I
brought back with me had
remained unopened until,
with this proposed
'celebratory' string
quartet (though at the
time it was difficult to
know quite what to
celebrate in
postrevolutionary
Romania), an occasion
arose where I could use
this material in what
seemed to me was a
non-exploitative manner.
The compositional
procedure was as follows:
to take Out of the Ruins
as a template on which
the Romanian vocal or
instrumental music would
be superimposed, quite
often stretched into new
intervallic shapes
through the demands of
the completely pre-formed

composer John W. Duarte
(1919-2004). Elegy does
not reflect the
compositional style of
Duarte, but rather is an
acknowledgement of his
editorial publication for
Chester Music (1984) of
'Homenaje pour le Tombeau
de Claude Debussy',
composed by Manual de
Falla (1920).
Consequently, 'Elegy'
adopts the compositional
style of the
Habanera. I first
met John W. Duarte in
1990, at the Wirral
International Guitar
Festival and it was on
this occasion that he
shared with me advice
about composing for
guitar. Subsequently,
thereafter I met him
several times at the same
event and was always
struck by his enthusiasm
to generously share his
knowledge about music. In
2020 I was honoured to be
asked, by JWD's son,
Chris Duarte, to edit
some previously
unpublished works written
by his father - works
that are now also
published by Les
Productions
d'OZ.

for a special concert
featuring Steven Mead as
guest soloist. Together
they gave the world
premiere on 28th April
2012 in the town theatre
of Idar-Oberstein.The
commission is a highlight
in the 30-year friendship
between composer and
soloist, which has
included many mutual CD
projects and concerts
and, now, a concerto.
Sparke had Steven
Mead’s special
euphonium sound in his
head throughout the
composition process and
made free use of the
variety of styles which
the world-renowned
virtuoso has made his own
during his highly
successful solo
career.The village
ofMörschied lies to
the west of Frankfurt am
Main in the area known as
the German Road of
Precious Stones, which is
famous for its thriving
gem industry. Because of
this it was decided to
give the commission a
local connection by
choosing the title,
Diamond Concerto.
Each of the three
movements is named after
a famous diamond:1 EARTH
STARis rather stern in
mood, opening with a free
fantasy for the soloist
over a static chord from
the band. This leads to
an Allegro Moderato in
minor mode where small
motives are gradually
repeated and developed by
both band and soloist.2
OCEAN DREAMuses a varied
quote from the
composer’s
Music for Battle
Creek, including a
melting slow melody that
was originally written
with Steven Mead in
mind.3 BLUE HEARTwas
written, at Steven
Mead’s suggestion,
in bebop style and takes
the form of a jazz waltz.
The quasi-improvisatory
central section features
a call-and-response
passage for the soloist
and upper

Sparke had Steven
Mead’s special
euphonium sound in his
head throughout the
composition process and
made free use of the
variety of styles which
the world-renowned
virtuoso has made his own
during his highly
successful solo
career.The village
ofMörschied lies to
the west of Frankfurt am
Main in the area known as
the German Road of
Precious Stones, which is
famous for its thriving
gem industry. Because of
this it was decided to
give the commission a
local connection by
choosing the title,
Diamond Concerto.
Each of the three
movements is named after
a famous diamond:1 EARTH
STARis rather stern in
mood, opening with a free
fantasy for the soloist
over a static chord from
the band. This leads to
an Allegro Moderato in
minor mode where small
motives are gradually
repeated and developed by
both band and soloist.2
OCEAN DREAMuses a varied
quote from the
composer’s
Music for Battle
Creek, including a
melting slow melody that
was originally written
with Steven Mead in
mind.3 BLUE HEARTwas
written, at Steven
Mead’s suggestion,
in bebop style and takes
the form of a jazz waltz.
The quasi-improvisatory
central section features
a call-and-response
passage for the soloist
and upper
