Traditional Christmas
Spiritual. Berg's
fantastic setting of this
beloved American
Christmas spiritual for
advanced tenor-bass
choirs tells a story of
hope and meaning. The
various textures
throughout the a cappella
arrangement with solos
add much variety and
musical interest. A
holiday programming
must!. This beloved
American Christmas
Spiritual, like all
spirituals and/or folk
songs, tells a story.
This is a story of hope
and meaning. The
introductory solo call
and response (mm. 1-7) is
hymnic in nature, just to
get us started. (Think of
it as an effective head
fake!) The entrance at m.
8 from the upper three
voices (we'll call them
the trio part henceforth)
is pivotal. They set the
stage for the
conversation between the
singers and the soloist
for the rest of the song.
From this point, the song
is basically a Jazz Trio
in vocal form. The bass
singers take on the role
of the cool dude in the
back wearing dark glasses
and a beret playing the
string bass. They provide
the driving force for the
forward movement of the
entire song. The trio
part, basically tenors 1
& 2 and baritones,
take on the role of the
keyboard providing
chordal structure and
syncopation. Their job is
to fill the listener's
ear with sound and
rhythm. The soloist tells
the story using the known
melody and text with
appropriate improv
opportunities to keep the
listeners focused on the
message of the song.
There is enough
repetition to make for
easy learning, but this
also means that the
chords need to snap into
position cleanly every
time. The Verses are
easily identified (there
are three) and presented
with some small
variations in Verse 3
(see mm. 56-58...this
only happens once). The
Refrain (mm. 30-37) is
the part of the song
where the singers switch
from the Jazz Trio role
and actually become a
Men's Choral Ensemble.
This Refrain is repeated
after Verse 3 at mm.
66-71. Between verses 2
& 3, there is not a
refrain. Instead, there
is a bridge repeated from
the introductory
material, but used this
time to move us into a
new key signature. This
can be a very exciting
moment for the singers as
well as the listeners!
Measures 72-75 is known
in the business as a
vamp. It can be repeated
once and then move on, OR
it can be repeated
multiple times, depending
on the comfort level of
the soloist and the
response of the audience.
It is important that
there be a clear signal
from the conductor as to
how to end the vamp and
move effectively to the
actual coda of the song.
The ending should be sung
with tight control that
only looks like reckless
abandon! Faces bright;
words clean; melody
clear; rhythms precise!
Enjoy. This beloved

one of the dedicatory
poems to his verse play
The Shadowy Waters
(1906), William Butler
Yeats asks: Is Eden far
away...? Do our woods and
winds and verponds cover
more quiet woods, More
shining winds, more
star-glimmering ponds? Is
Eden out of time and out
of space? How do you
answer such questions? We
have only the vague
elusive promptings of our
own mysterious, troubled
hearts to tell us that
the Eden we long for is
there, somewhere beyond
the physical world which
frames our existence, in
another realm of
different dimensions. And
- what is most painful to
admit - that it is closed
to us in the form in
which we live and
breathe, even if at times
we do have
intimations..., Yeats is
telling us that this
paradise, this Eden we
yearn for is here -
present even if
invisible, palpable even
if intangible. In his
Second Symphony, Mahler
meets an angel who tells
him he can't get into
heaven, he's locked out.
The news is shattering.
What follows is an
inconsolable sorrowing,
the same sorrowing that
comes when we wake to the
realization that we too
are locked out of Eden.
Eden is the heaven of our
longing and desire for
release from pain and
suffering. Eden is the
image in our restive
minds that reflects the
reconciled, resolved,
quiescent state of soul
we hunger for. But Eden
eludes -because it is not
a place. It is a state of
soul which answers none
of the illusory,
hampering conditions that
shape and bind us to the
real world of our bodies,
our appetites, our
passions, and our
beliefs. I have turned
Yeats' question Is Eden
out of time and out of
space? into its own
answering. However near
we may sense its presence
at times, Eden remains
unreachable, ungraspable,
unknowable, unthinkable.
It forever eludes us. I
wrote this music the way
I did to shut out -with
quietness and
otherworldliness - the
clamor and clang of the
raucous Garish Day, to
turn away its tumult and
noise, to negate its
stridency and chaos.
Perhaps in the cleansing
stillness and blessing of
this emptied-out state of
soul, Eden, through still
hidden, may not be so far
way; though still
unreachable, may be close
enough almost to
touch. In one of the

question “Is Eden
out of time and out of
space?†into its
own answering. However
near we may sense its
presence at times, Eden
remains unreachable,
ungraspable, unknowable,
unthinkable. It forever
eludes us.I wrote this
music the way I did to
shut out –with
quietness and
otherworldliness –
the clamor and clang of
the raucous “Garish
Day,†to turn away
its tumult and noise, to
negate its stridency and
chaos. Perhaps in the
cleansing stillness and
blessing of this
emptied-out state of
soul, Eden, through still
hidden, may not be so far
way; though still
unreachable, may be close
enough almost to
touch. $29.99 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks | | |

Robert Stallman has drawn
accolades around the
world as a performer and
recording artist who
“dazzles because of
his penetrating
artistry†(Sunday
Times/London). Also known
internationally for
superior flute editions,
including numerous
transcriptions that have
greatly expanded the
repertoire, Stallman now
offers flutists an
appealing collection of
original melodic
warm-ups. With The
Flutist’s
Handbook, he shares his
fresh approach to staying
in shape and maintaining
his reputation for
“consummate
virtuosityâ€
(Repertoire/France). P
refaceOne morning many
years ago I opened my
flute case and suddenly
found myself questioning
the wisdom of having
scales and long tones
come first in my practice
session. Of course, these
are essential to daily
practice, but I wondered
if there might be a
better way to begin the
day—with something
more melodic and
engaging, something to
really inspire me.The
Flutist’s Handbook
emerged from a stream of
musical ideas I began to
jot down during practice
sessions after that
“aha†moment.
As I worked with them, I
noticed a more
spontaneous interest in
practicing. In fact I
even looked forward to
starting my day this way.
As a result, my work on
scales, arpeggios and
long tones followed with
more enjoyment and
focused attention.In
creating many of the
détaché warm-ups
found in Part I, I was
drawn to the musical
sequences of J. S. Bach,
particularly those
developed in his keyboard
works. Bach had
discovered the most
satisfying musical
patterns on which to
build his music, so here
was a treasure trove of
invigorating melodic
material. I also borrowed
apt détaché
passages from C.P.E.
Bach, Schubert,
Dvořák and
others.Part II includes
more musical quodlibets
and echos in a collection
of fifteen short melodies
designed to open and
center the tone, while
encouraging full breath
support. These melodies
also concentrate on
developing our sostenuto,
or true legato
playing—the
foundation of a beautiful
sonority and natural
vocal expression. Except
for final cadence notes,
these warm-ups should be
practiced without
vibrato, to create an
even and seamless
instrument, bottom to
top.All of these warm-ups
are to be played forte
and piano in every major
key, proceeding
chromatically by rising
half-steps. Tempo
indications are given in
the headings, as are
optional rhythmic and
articulation variants.
Suggested breath marks
are in parentheses.The
Handbook opens with
détaché warm-ups
for a good reason. It is
vital to begin our
practice with tonguing,
as a clean attack is
essential to producing a
beautiful tone. Also, in
working on tonguing
(single, double, triple
and tremolando) we
stimulate and strengthen
the jaw muscles that
support the embouchure
(which must remain supple
and flexible). As we
fine-tune these muscles,
we gain tonal center and
clarity, qualities that
may elude us at the
beginning of our
practice. Of course, we
also need to wake up the
air stream and deepen our
breath support. Once the
tongue is alive and the
tone is centered, we are
ready to work further on
our sonority with the
melodic warm-ups in Part
II.This book is meant for
professionals, students
and amateur flutists
alike. I offer it to all
as a companion that
invites more pleasure and
vitality into our daily
practice. It is my firm
belief that by aligning
ourselves with our love
of music and its
energizing patterns each
day—from the very
first moment we pick up
the instrument—we
will bring more ease and
focus into our lifelong
task of staying in shape.
This in turn will support
the heightened
inspiration we want to
take into rehearsals and
performances.
