Salsa has become quite a dance craze. Its popularity has grown from the Cuban and Puerto Rican community to include most of the Americas, Europe, and even Japan. New Salsa bands are forming everywhere from New York to Los Angeles, from Tokyo to Paris. But despite its increasing popularity, many musicians find that Salsa and the other genres of Afro Cuban Music are still very difficult to feel and play in an authentic relaxed way. This type of music with its unique concept of the Clave presents quite a challenge for the aspiring young performer. In the past, the only way to learn how to play Salsa was to live in an area where Salsa was already very popular so that one might connect with as many authentic musicians as possible; learning one pattern here, another there, via a very slow learning process that could take years if not decades to accomplish. Even though the process of immersing oneself fully and experientially in the music style of our choosing is absolutely necessary for our musical growth, the need for concise, well written, and organized materials, written by someone who knows and lives this type of music is also essential. We at ADG, believe that Mr. Campos' books are doing exactly that. This collection showcases the syncopated piano music of Latin American during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It features Latin rhythms, which are really African rhythms brought to the Americas by slaves and applied to the music of the European colonists. These rhythms are varied and complex and so is their history. They've had a widespread and profound influence on the evolution of popular music not only in Latin America, but also in the United States. The most obvious offshoots are the tango in Argentine and Uruguay and most of the other popular dances of South and Central America, as well as ragtime and jazz in the United States. Jelly Roll Morton claimed this Latin tinge is the essential element that distinguishes jazz from ragtime. These rhythms are the musical roots of groups like The Buena Vista Social Club.

This composition is in its own way meant to be a tribute dedicated to Paquito D'Rivera showing the author's appreciation for this musician as an exponent of Cuban music of the past and present century, who represents a stronghold and example for all musicians - in particular for saxophonists and clarinetists - not only in his capacity as a performer and composer but also as a cultivator of both sound worlds, the so-called classical music and its popular counterpart in its most ample interpretative spectrum. The piece consists of four movements: Allegro Moderato, Lento, Allegretto and Allegro con Fuoco. Its outstanding feature is the fusion of elements of jazz (such as the improvisation in the first and fourth movements, parts of which are accompanied by the piano with its interpretation being based on concepts characteristic of jazz or the 'tumbaos” to be found in Cuban music) and classical music. The second movement starts off with a short recitativo, followed by a mixture of phrases borrowed from contemporary music, Afro-Cuban styles and jazz, whose distinctive rhythmic cells and articulations clearly define the character of the movement and finally culminate in tempo primo. The third movement shows a certain 'casualness” and tranquility in its melody as well as in its accompaniment, including a cadenza the musician may execute at will - the movement then culminates either in an improvisation ad lib or in the mere execution of the melody as notated. The fourth movement is charged with spiritual energy. Saxophone and piano frequently trade phrases, and there is an abundance of improvised passages and jazz phrases. Par COLQUHOUN MICHAEL. Salsa is a popular Hispanic-American urban dance music with deep African and Cuban roots. Charanga is a style of Salsa which was popular from the 1920's through the 1970's. What made Charanga unique was that along with the usual percussion section (congas, bongos/cowbell, timbales, maracas/guiro and clave) there was a string section and a flute lead. When the music was cocinando (or 'cooking”), the percussion, piano, bass and strings would play a powerfully swinging, polyrhythmic patter over which the Charanga flutist was free to improvise complex and intricate riffs. These days, while Salsa is popular as ever, the Charanga as a separate entity is rare. The flute, however,continues to be an important solo instrument.
