The
guitar's repertory is now
widely varied and
includes works that
cover, in historical
periods, all technical
and interpretative
aspects, from the single
instrument to the guitar
orchestra, passing to the
duo, the quartet and the
ensemble. What I
thought to be important
was a work that would
include a comparison
between the instruments,
a dialog in which music
flows between the
instruments in a
harmonized way, with
moments of hard work and
others of listening,
almost to underline the
friendship and the
collaboration between the
players... it is in that
way that these songs of
middle difficulty are
developed, where the
components of the
orchestra not only have
their part to play, they
must also pay attention
to the solo guitar
playing the theme in
counterpoint to
themselves. The three
compositions presented
are of different
inspiration: Mattina
Presto is the
awakening of the day,
clear, as a spring
morning. It's the easiest
song, with it's simple
melody that flits among
the voices in the group;
Scirok (Scirocco
in Albanese) contains a
theme inspired by
balcanic music,
signifying the interest
of entering other
populations to better
understand their culture,
as in Sweet
Argentina, that
begins with a tanguero
rhythm, passing then to a
slower and more delicate
melody and by the end
returning to the original
popular danced rhythm.

only help those who play
to grow musically, but
will also spark a culture
interest, music born by
the love for the
instrument and the world

Unusually, Bridge starts
the arrangement with an
extended fantasy upon the
main theme, never stating
it completely. A series
of stabbing chords begin
the music, and help to
mark out the start of
each section. Elements of
the tune then weave in
and out of the music, and
are passed equally
between all five players.
The first four notes of
the theme in rhythmic
diminution are
transformed into a
delicate arpeggio that
permeate the music, all
accompanied with the lush
chords of early 20th
century English music.
After about one hundred
bars the music reaches an
impassioned climax before
the tune is finally
stated in its full form,
with each instrument in
turn taking a solo phrase
accompanied by the
others. A final, peaceful
coda using the delicate
arpeggio of the first
sections brings the piece

winds and strings were
often performed and were
very successful works
during his lifetime.
Their density, but also
the delicateness of the
scherzo movements are in
the tradition of Schumann
and Mendelssohn and these
traits are combined with
Rheinberger's sense for
the clear, defined
structure of the
movements and solid
contrapuntal writing. The
octet for winds and
strings is published here
for the first time and
the nonet, which is
actually a reworking of
this octet that
Rheinberger undertook
some twenty years later,
is also published in this
volume. Rheinberger made
major changes from the
original octet and he
added two new movements
to the nonet. Both works
show especially the
interest and pleasure
which he derived from the
variety in the
differentiation of colors
in ensemble playing. The
Thema mit Veranderungen
op. 93, which until now
has been known as a work

Serenade is a “peaceful
serenade:” serenade as
in: romantic, quasi
improvised music which
should be sung at night
under the stars. The main
“singer” here is the
clarinet. In general the
music is extremely quiet,
delicate, sensuous and
sentimental. The
sensuousness is created
by Latin song elements
especially the nostalgic
Brazilian folk song,
which is at times
combined with Blues style
melody and harmony. The
string quartet has a
technically expressively
challenging part which is
not merely the
accompaniment to the
clarinet, but rather it
is responsible for
setting the mood in which
the clarinet sings. This
is Aguila’s opus 59 and
it was commissioned by
Pacific Serenades
Ensemble of California
who premiered the work in
1998. Of course the
ensemble's name inspired
the name of this work as
well as its mood. In an
age of boom boxes, media
bombardment of
information and pop
culture becoming
increasingly aggressive,
boisterous and violent, I
felt the need to write
just the opposite… to
show once more that less

(1844) by Alexandre

at least have heard of
the “four
invinciblesâ€; four
extraordinary names -
D’Artagnan, Athos,
Porthos, and Aramis - and
one unique motto
“All for one, and
one for all.†The
musical texture of Les
Trois Mousquetaires
is focused on specific
elements of a
character’s
personality rather thanon
its influence on the
book's plot. Maxime Aulio
has largely turned his
attention on
D’Artagnan, the
sensitive, romantic and
perfect gentleman who is
easily charmed by women
such as the gentle
Constance Bonacieux and
the perfidious Milady de
Winter whose beguiling
beauty seduced him. The
first movement -
D’Artagnan
- is true to the
character of the young
provincial noble of the
Gascony region: heroic
and enthusiastic in all
circumstances. The second
movement entitled
