After plunging his contemporaries into the delights of Renaissance revelry with the ‘ Bal De Beatrice D'Este', the composer continued to explore the past with a tribute, in 1907, to Rameau (in the final drumroll of the ‘ Sonatine' for Piano). He also published Songs And Madrigals, composed on a selection of texts written by famous 15th and 16th century poets: Charles d'Orleans, Jean-Antoine de Baï f and Agrippa d'Aubigne. Composed for three- and four-part choir (with optional Piano accompaniment duplicating the Vocals), these six Songs And Madrigals radiate a powerful charm that preserves them from affectation: Un Loyal Coeur envelops the listener in the polyphonic latticework of an enchanting melancholy, while Vivons, Mignarde borrows rhythmically from Lully to exalt the 'sweet life' that Coralie's lips promise to make even more voluptuous. The Pirates of Penzance (Les Pirates de Penzance) est sans doute la plus célèbre opérette du compositeur Gilbert et du librettiste Sullivan. L’oeuvre fut créée simultanément en Angleterre et aux États-Unis, fin décembre 1879, pour sécuriser les droits d’auteur dans les deux pays. Le succès fut immédiat. Après être restée à l’affiche pendant plus de trois mois à New York, l’opérette s’est installée à l’Opéra Comique de Londres, en 1880, pour 363 représentations. Ruth, la gouvernante du jeune Frédéric, est chargée de faire en sorte qu’il devienne pilote des mers. Hélas, Ruth, un tantinet dure d’oreille, confond les termes pilote et pirate, et met Frédéric en apprentissagechez une bande de charmants pirates orphelins. À ses vingt et un ans, il est libéré de son contrat d’apprentissage et peut réintégrer un modèle de société respectable avec pour obligation de dénoncer ses anciens compagnons. Ruth révèle alors que Frédéric est né une année bissextile, un 29 février : il n’a donc en réalité que cinq ans ! Il restera donc apprenti pirate jusqu’à son vingt et unième anniversaire. Entre temps, Frédéric s’éprend de Mabel, une des nombreuses filles du Major-Général Stanley. L’opérette touche à sa fin et les quiproquos s’enchaînent. Les pirates, le Major-Général et toutes ses filles se côtoient dans une joyeuse cacophonie à laquelle un sergent de police timoré réussit à mettre un terme en invoquant la loyauté envers la reine Victoria. Et tout le monde cède. Vers la fin de l’Acte II, Frédéric et Mabel chantent un duo d’amour d’une beauté envoûtante, “Ah, leave me not to pine alone and desolate” (“Ah, ne me laisse pas languir et désespérer”). This music seems especially romantic to me, in the sense that the sounds have much to say about loneliness. There are moments where this album emphasises its own seriousness, then immediately afterwards invites us todance. Contact sticks out a hand, sometimes two, mostly to show the internal process of the composer - firstly the lack of fire and the abandoned longing for this, followed by the bewilderment that there is something that is still smouldering and that can be fanned into a blazing forest fire to burn away all the pain of desolation. For this reason it is also moving music - because it wants the recognition of the listener, wants us to feel our own desolation while the piano explores further depths and heights. At times a composition is almost carelessly abandoned and another one begun. Whoever looks closely at feelings and is honest with himself and the world is always a little cruel. But finally there is an end to that desert - he sees an oasis and also a beautiful hotel. Upon entering, he sees no-one, not even at the desk, but the reigning play of light and colour is of an otherworldly power. Maybe no other people are needed here and the beauty that prevails is enough. Then sounds of music arise and some people move across to the immense hall where a wing has been set up, behind which a man is sitting, his fingers moving across the keyboard. And only one thing is real: after desolation comes comfort. That person is you and that person is me. And that music is called Contact, directly from the soul of Van Nueten. From the composer: 'In the wilderness of the Australian Alps, there is only one tree, the Snow Gum (eucalyptus pauciflora) that lives above 1600 metres. Snow Gums are experiencing severe dieback, caused by attack by a native beetle. Strangely, the beetle and the Snow Gums have coexisted for thousands of years, but now the Snow Gums are no longer able to withstand the hunger of the beetles. As yet the reasons for this are unknown. Huge areas of these once magnificent and colourful trees now stand grey and dead. In this piece I am depicting the gnarled and twisted trunks of the still living trees with their wonderfully coloured bark, in contrast to the ruggedness and desolation of the terrain.
