Janacek's intimate chamber-music drama about the passionate love of a simple farm boy for a beautiful gypsy girl is one of his great vocal masterpieces. This cycle of 22 songs for tenor (an alto and three female voices/female choir SSA are added in three numbers) was composed on a setting of poems that were published anonymously. It was not until 80 years later that their author was identified as the regional poet and writer Ozef Kalda. The cycle also contains theatrical elements, such as the alto entrance and exit cues and lighting effects. Composed in 1917-19, the Diary was premiered in Brno in 1921 from a manuscript prepared by Gustav Homola. The same manuscript served as abasis for the first edition which was issued by the Brno publisher Oldrich Pazdirek in 1921 as well as for this current first Urtext edition. Par GOODALL HOWARD. Shackelton's Cross was inspired by a painting created in 1957 by the English artist Edward Seago (1910-1974). The title refers to a cross which was erected to the memory of Sir Ernest Shackleton, who led a number of explorations to the Antarctic. Shackleton died in 1922 whilst on a Polar expedition, and the cross can be found on a promontory at the entrance to the bay at Grytviken Whaling Station in South Georgia. The painting is owned by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, and was part of an exhibition at Buckingham Palace from October 2011 to April 2012. Originally scored for oboe, trumpet and small orchestra, Daniel Hall's sensitive arrangement follows the composer's alternative version for solo trumpet and organ, created for Crispian Steele-Perkins (trumpet) and David Goode (organ). / Répertoire / Ensemble de Cuivres

Par BUXTEHUDE DIETRICH. This work has survived in an autograph, unfortunately undated, preserved in the Düben Collection. The cantata is a setting of Ecclesiasticus 50, verses 24–26. This composition is one of the most richly scored vocal compositions of Buxtehude. A ritornello, which includes a fanfare of trumpets, and a longer vocal section based on “Nun danket alle Gott” create the work’s structure. In Nun danket alle Gott Buxtehude indicated in detail, in at least one instance, the use of an a cappella entrance of the choir. Par JOLIVET ANDRE. Pastoreles De Noë l by Andre Jolivet is a piece for Flute, Bassoon and the Harp lasting nearly 13 minutes. This piece is really gentle and restrained which demonstrates the quality of Jolivet 's work but also reflects that period of WWII when France was under occupation. These scores are of medium level of ability. Pastoreles De Noë l features four sections: L'etoile (the Star), Les Mages (the Wisemen), La Vierge et l'Enfant (the Virgin and the Child) and Entree et Danse des Bergers (the Shepherds' dance). Each of these parts describes a part of theChristmas story, starting with the Flute and the Bassoon in a duet, followed by the entrance of the Harp to settle the first part. The second section is quieter, expressing the walk in the desert. The Virgin and the Child is like a lullaby and the piece finishes on a joyful dance to express happiness and devotion. Andre Jolivet is a French composer who was really inspired by the Antiquity, and had a strong interest for atonality.
