virtuosity of the Network
for New Music ensemble
served as the inspiration
for Fantasy. While there
are three distinct
movements, there is no
break in the musical
flow. The first and
second movements are
bridged by a sustained
climatic chord in the
piano, from which the
solo violin emerges to
begin the Vocalise. The
tentative clarinet line
which closes the second
movement grows into an
intense trill, which in
turn cues the dramatic
entry of the cello in
double-stops to begin the
final movement. As the
title implies, a certain
freedom of expression
pervades the whole,
expressed both in terms
of plasticity of line and
in the bravura playing
style evident
particularly at the start
of the final
movement.

This is a
much more mature
composition than one
would expect, given it
was a student
composition. The
harmonies are rich and
deeply chromatic, but
with a sense of energy
and drive even through
the slower sections of
the piece. The opening
section is slow and
reflective, alternating
passage in rhythmic
unison with overlapping
entries that build up the
texture gradually. This
leads in to the main body
of the piece, which is
lively and exciting with
many triplet rhythms. The
first section is highly
contrapuntal with all
instruments contributing
equally to the texture.
The second subject is
much broader in feel,
with more of a two in a
bar feel. Elements of the
slow introduction are
woven in to the texture
until a climax is
reached. This is
interrupted by a much
freer section, with
recit-like passages for
all instruments. After a
brief recap of the
introduction the material
from the fast section
appears again. This
becomes faster and faster
until the final
triumphant, major
section.
This is a
full arrangement of this
piece, and as such
requires confident
players with very strong
technique. Full ranges of
the instruments are used,
and at nearly 20 minutes
long the reed and horn
players will need plenty
of stamina to get
through. However it is
well worth the work to
become familiar with this
unknown gem.

the saxophonist quite a
workout, and the listener
a midsummer
delight. AS LIGHT AS
BIRD FROM BRIER is
loosely based on
Shakespeare’s play
A Midsummer
Night’s Dream,
which has haunted me
since I was nine years
old. My parents
subscribed me to The
Children’s Record
Guild, and every month a
new 78rpm vinyl record
would arrive in the mail.
They were mostly fairy
tales and “kids
lit,†but in this
case it was a very
condensed performance of
the actual play, with
Mendelssohn’s
music. I loved it
immediately, and still do
– I saw a
performance in 2014 at
the Stratford Festival
that literally stalks my
dreams.When I was
commissioned by
saxophonist Stephen Page
to compose a work for
soprano saxophone and
piano two years later, I
channeled Mendelssohn as
an inspiration:
specifically, the
Overture, the Scherzo,
the Intermezzo, the
fairy’s song
“You spotted snakes
with double
tongue,†and the
Rustics’ Dance.
But it’s not a
pastiche – most of
the music is completely
my own, though attentive
listeners will detect
snatches of
Mendelssohn’s
haunting score
throughout.This piece
joins MILL SONGS and
FLORESTAN’S FALCON
among works honoring my
favorite 19th-century
composers (in those
cases, Schubert and
Schumann) without ripping
them off. As Stravinsky
did in his ballet
Pulcinella, I have
borrowed fragments of
melody from a much-loved
composer, and made a
fabric of harmonies and
scales that are
genetically related to
Mendelssohn, but
unmistakably Welcher.In
this work, the
saxophonist is Puck
– skittish,
dazzlingly fast, and
brilliant in the outer
parts, and a mischievous
Cupid in the long,
central Love Song.
(Remember how Puck
anoints Titania’s
eyes with the juice from
a magic flower, which
causes her to fall in
love with Bottom the
weaver, who has been
bewitched and wears a
donkey’s head?)
The music traces
Puck’s magic
flight, the finding of
the flower,
Titania’s
love-scene with Bottom
and her fairies, and the
rustic players –
whose rehearsal of the
funniest
play-within-the-play in
literature is interrupted
by Puck’s dirty
tricks.I greatly enjoyed
the process of writing
this piece, and often
found myself quite moved
even as I was writing
it... which rarely
happens. Stephen Page,
who commissioned the
work, is a consummate
artist (and a bit of a
Puck himself). The title
comes from
Oberon’s final
speech in the

Thomas's setting of Psalm
137 ,,An den Wassern zu
Babel (,,By the waters of
Babylon) is one of his
earlier compositions and
the second that he
published at Breitkopf &
Hartel in 1928, after the
Mass in A op. 1. The
motet for double choir
with a performing time of
about six minutes
portrays the psalm text
vividly. Long flowing
lines in the beginning
point to the rivers of
Babylon, leading on to
the lament of the
Israelites and finally to
a fantasy of revenge
before coming back to the
flowing lines in the end.
Although the motet
includes many of the
features of his later
choral works, it is among
the more easily
accessible works of Kurt
Thomas and can therefore
also be performed by good
amateur choirs.
