as a short piano sonata,
with the movements
forming a typical
fast--slow--fast pattern.
The electronic sounds on
tape are tightly
interworven with the
piano, often serving to
extend and transform the
piano's sound. The goal
is to create a hybrid
sound world. The phrase
secret geometry is used
to describe the play of
forms in certain
paintings, referring to
structural patterns that
are used to organize the
pictorial elements. Since
the electronic medium
permits a composer to
focus on the
micro-structure of
individual sounds, as
well as more customary
concerns with patterns of
pitch and rhythm, it
seemed appropriate to
choose a title that
emphasizes the careful
shaping of every
compositional element.
But this is not to
neglect the spiritual
impulse of the work.
After all, the obscure
motion of the Holy Spirit
herself describes a
secret geometry, what
Thomas Merton called a
hidden wholeness. Written
for the distinguished
pianist Aleck Karis,
Secret Geometry was
composed with the
assistance of a grant
from the Pennsylvania
Council on the Arts. The
tape was realized in the
Presser Electronic Music
Studio of the University

on the other hand the
graphic text is measured
millimeter by millimeter.
The latter serves as the
basis - the genetic code
- for the temporal,
horizontal structure of
the quintet, whereas the
reading of the author
appears in rhythmic
surfaces which interrupt
the horizontal plane. In
<< figurations de memoire
>> two clearly
recognizable elements are
repeated: the tone b
(which plays a central
roll in most of my works)
and a chord of fifths
built around the tone b -
a piece of memory
(memoire) from viola
concerto. In contrast,
the extended chords of
the reading consist of
five tones which in their
frequencies are
equidistant from each
other (like an overtone
chord). For the
generation of tone
materials the chords of
both levels are
compressed and stretched
within the ranges
(frames) of tones from
which the horizontal
positions of the text
fragments are derived:
lower, borderline tones
on the left margin, and
higher borderline tones
on the right margin. Thus
the disposition on the
page, essential for
Anne-Marie Albiach (and
first introduced in
poetry by Mallarme in Un
coup de des jamais
n'abolire le hasard), is
rendered in sound.
Naturally each element of
the text serves to mold
structure and dynamic, to
include typography:
fragments within
quotation marks, in

concerts and exhibits of
the Cleveland Museum of
Art were an important
formative influence for
me during my student
days. So when the
invitation came to create
a new work celebrating
this institution on its
seventy-fifth
anniversary, I was not
only happy to accept, but
knew immediately that I
wanted to write a piece
that would somehow relate
specifically to the
museum. I decided to make
the work a reflection on
a painting in the
museum's collection:
Zurbaran's The Holy House
of Nazareth. My quartet
is not program music in a
narrative sense, but
rather a kind of
meditation that takes its
tone from this painting's
remarkable integration of
intense affect,
mysterious repose and
secret geometry. Besides
Zurbaran's painting, the
piece is occupied with a
purely musical object of
contemplation: the hymn
tune Picardy, best known
with the text Let All
Mortal Flesh Keep
Silence. This tune
permeates the harmonic
and melodic life of the
quartet, sometimes
appearing in a very
simple, straightforward
fashion, but often hidden
amidst more complex
structures. I was
attracted to the melody
for its musical
qualities, but later
realized that the hymn's
text also resonates with
the mood of the painting;
the words speak of a
reverent awe, of cherubim
with sleepless eye, and
of the mystery of the
Incarnate Word who must
suffer: King of kings,

stand alone work for
orchestraand is loosely
inspired by the American
tradition of quilt
making. I composed
Quilting while living
most of last year in
Paris.During my time
there, I thought a lot
about what it means to
compose symphonic music
as a young American in
the 21st century, when so
many of the many
masterworks which are
programmed year in and
out by orchestras across
the country are European.
I considered which
artistic traditions
defined the American
19th-century. I began to
think of the American
crafts-tradition of
quilting as a foilto the
high-art tradition of
European orchestral
composition. As the score
for my new work began to
take shape, I started
thinking about the
manuscript itself as an
object, its vertical and
horizontal planes create
a kind of patterned
geometry of their own.
Visually the way a
musical score is woven
together like patchwork
brought to mind quilts
and the great American
tradition of quilting. I
imagined about how
conducting an orchestra
can feellike stitching a
piece together, or sewing
together a large number
of musical ideas and
musicians into a coherent
and transcendent whole.
Quilting was an integral
part of American
vernacular in the 18th
and 19th centuries, the
African-American quilting
tradition is especially
fascinating, and the
quilts tell the stories
of the women and
communities who made
them. The names of the
quilt patterns themselves
can have their own sense
of narrative: 'jacobs
ladder', 'drunkards
path', 'solomon's
puzzle', and (my favorite
for its relevance to this
piece) 'the road to

to be a small symphonic
poem describing different
episodes of the book: the
despair of the children
stranded on the island,
the use of the unifying
conch and symbol of
democracy, the
adventures, and the
formation of the camp and
finally the savagery of
the clan of Jack which
undeniably leads to
chaos. The finale is
mysterious and half-tone,
imbued with both the
relief of having been
rescued, and a deep
sadness linked to the
tragic events that have
occurred on the island.
All the main themes and
elements developed in the
work come from the idea
“d-e-fâ€,
exposed from the first
bars. The orchestration
is intended to be
variable in geometry and
avoids the main technical
difficulties related to
the instruments. However,
the composer wanted to
find as many colors as
possible and avoided
confining himself to too
“simpleâ€

concerts and exhibits of
the Cleveland Museum of
Art were an important
formative influence for
me during my student
days. So when the
invitation came to create
a new work celebrating
this institution on its
seventy-fifth
anniversary, I was not
only happy to accept, but
knew immediately that I
wanted to write a piece
that would somehow relate
specifically to the
museum. I decided to make
the work a reflection on
a painting in the
museum's collection:
Zurbaran's The Holy House
of Nazareth. My quartet
is not program music in a
narrative sense, but
rather a kind of
meditation that takes its
tone from this painting's
remarkable integration of
intense affect,
mysterious repose and
secret geometry. Besides
Zurbaran's painting, the
piece is occupied with a
purely musical object of
contemplation: the hymn
tune Picardy, best known
with the text Let All
Mortal Flesh Keep
Silence. This tune
permeates the harmonic
and melodic life of the
quartet, sometimes
appearing in a very
simple, straightforward
fashion, but often hidden
amidst more complex
structures. I was
attracted to the melody
for its musical
qualities, but later
realized that the hymn's
text also resonates with
the mood of the painting;
the words speak of a
reverent awe, of cherubim
with sleepless eye, and
of the mystery of the
Incarnate Word who must
suffer: King of kings,
