Par SCHUMANN ROBERT. Robert Schumann once described his lieder as a ”mirror image of his self”. This applies particularly to his compositions from Heinrich Heine's 'Buch der Lieder”. What began as a lyrical intermezzo, then developed into 'Dichterliebe”, a work with which Schumann identified the ardour of his love for Clara Wieck. This work still presents an enigma to performers- how Schumann interpretes Heine's irony in his music is often discussed. But one thing is certain: with 'Dichterliebe” the composer created what is perhaps the best-loved and one of the most tightly-woven lieder cycles of the Romantic period. This new edition presents the work based on the first edition. It takes Schumann's autograph score into consideration, an autograph score where there have recently been discussions as to whether it should be presented as an independent alternative version. All of these works belong to the 'concert piece” genre, as the title pages of the respective first editions suggest. The works' instrumentation is varied: While „ Frühlings-Botschaft ' and „ Beim Sonnenuntergang' are composed for mixed choir and orchestra, 'Die heilige Nacht” calls for an additional solo alto. 'Frühlings-Phantasie” is not scored for choir at all, juxtaposing the orchestra with four solo voices and piano. Since 1914 the ensemble was obliged to perform the Austrian national anthem at the opening of every concert. Suk decided to supplement this obligatory piece with a work inspired by the ancient sacred Bohemian 'St. Wenceslas” hymn. The hymn's message - a plea for the well-being of the Czech people, directed at their patron saint - was immediately understood by the audience. The Bohemian String Quartet performed this single-movement Meditation for the first time on 27 September 1914 - the premiere of the version for string orchestra followed on 22 November 1914, played by the Czech Philharmonic. That same year the piece was published by Fr. A. Urbánek together with arrangements for piano and organ. Telemann's Passion oratorio 'Der Tod Jesu? was composed in 1754/55, almost at the same time as the same-named work of note by Carl Heinrich Graun.
