Following
the successful
publication of
Homenaje a Rodrigo
(2015), containing four
pieces by Alessandro
Spazzoli – one of
which was performed in
the presence of the
composer’s
daughter, Cecilia
Rodrigo, during her visit
to the International
Convention in Alessandria
–, here is the
second volume. It
contains more tributes to
Rodrigo written on my
input by five well-known
Italian and Spanish
composers, two of whom
are also guitarists and
have therefore written
the fingering for their
own pieces. Giovanni
Podera plunges us into a
typically Rodrigo-like
atmosphere with his
evocative
Fantasia, while
the following three
compositions are full of
direct quotations from
pieces also for guitar by
the great composer from
Valencia. Thus, Marco
Simoni, in his expressive
Junto a Rodrigo
– which also
provides the title to the
volume – plays
with themes taken from
Junto al
Generalife and from
Dos piezas
caballerescas for a
cello ensemble as well as
hinting at reminiscences
of Tiento antiguo.
As for Marco Smaili, in
his impressionistic
Fronda de la
tarde, he evokes
quite evidently
Zarabanda lejana
and Invocación y
Danza, but there are
more hidden references to
Caminos de
Santiago and even to
the very famous
Concierto de
Aranjuez. Marco
Reghezza builds his
heart-breaking Nana
estrellada on a
sequence of chords used
by Rodrigo in the
fantasia ¡Que buen
caminito!. On the
other hand, there are no
direct quotations and
echoes of
Rodrigo’s way of
writing in the Fuga a
quattro voci by Paolo
Ugoletti. However it was
Rodrigo himself who
constructed four-part
imitative passages for
guitar in
Pasacalle and in
the Ricercare of the
Fantasia para un
Gentilhombre. The
close polyphony of the
piece by Ugoletti may be
considered as a tribute
to this kind of craft
shown by Rodrigo who,
like Ugoletti, was able
to write such dense and
idiomatic counterpoint
without being a
guitar-player. I am
pleased that this volume
comes out in the
imminence of the 20th
anniversary of the
disappearance of the
illustrious Spanish
composer who gave so much
to the musicians –
and not only to

Finnish. The hymn
from the tone poem
Finlandia op. 26 for
orchestra, one of the
best-known works of Jean
Sibelius, became the
unofficial national
anthem of Finland with
the text of Veikko Antero
Koskenniemi (1906-1962).
In a time of great
insecurity after the
attack of the Soviet
Union in 1939,
Koskenniemi managed to
capture the rising
national consciousness
and the hope of the Finns
for an imminent solution
of the conflict. Sibelius
had already written an
arrangement of the hymn
for male choir on a
different text in 1938,
but after a suggestion by
his publisher Roger
Lindberg, he decided to
write a version for mixed
choir, too, on the by now
better known text by
Koskenniemi. This version
in F major was published
in 1949, but at Breitkopf
& Hartel only with a
German translation by
Hellmuth von Hase. The
Finlandia-Hymn with the
Finnish text by
Koskenniemi is therefore
now available at
Breitkopf & Hartel for
the first time, as Urtext
of the complete edition
Jean Sibelius Works. The
edition includes both the
version in F major as
well as a second version
in A flat major, written
by Sibelius himself, too,
but until now unpublished
outside of the complete

composition presents us
with a bird's eye view of
the events: First of all,
the consecration of the
chapel on the Klinkenberg
mountain is set to music
in a hymn, after which
the trumpets and
trombones announce the
imminent battle. In the
subsequent fray not only
the sounds of sabres and
rapiers can clearly be
heard but also the
wailing of the wounded.
When the Duke of
Brunswick is wounded and
captured by the troops of
Walraf, Konrad von Diepen
and his men march on
Coesfeld in victory. Set
against a festive melody,
the hymnresounds in full
glory.

historische gebeurtenis

Firstly this setting of
the Mass provides
pointers to the situation
of Austrian church music
as it had been affected
by imperial decrees.
Secondly the political
situation, with the
imminent invasion of
Austria by Napoleon's
troops, had reached a
crisis point which is
reflected in the
description of this
composition as a Mass in
time of war. Last but not
least, this work is the
first of the group of six
settings of the Latin
Mass which, together with
the oratorios The
Creation and The Seasons,
form the body of Haydn's
last period vocal works,
and which unquestionably
belong among his supreme
creative achievements.

analysis of the sources,
their historical context

this setting of the Mass
provides pointers to the
situation of Austrian
church music as it had
been affected by imperial
decrees. Secondly the
political situation, with
the imminent invasion of
Austria by Napoleon's
troops, had reached a
crisis point which is
reflected in the
description of this
composition as a Mass in
time of war. Last but not
least, this work is the
first of the group of six
settings of the Latin
Mass which, together with
the oratorios The
Creation and The Seasons,
form the body of Haydn's
last period vocal works,
and which unquestionably
belong among his supreme
creative achievements.

movement is succinct, yet
a microcosmic powerhouse
inspired by “The
Comet,” by Polish
writer and Holocaust
victim Bruno Schulz.
Hersch’s intensity is
expressed through
dramatically captivating
violin gestures, pushing
the boundaries of
texture, technique, and
emotion. Michael
Hersch’s in the snowy
margins was written in
2010. Like much of his
work, it is grounded in
literature and art. The
title is drawn from a
short story, The Comet by
Polish writer, poet, and
artist, Bruno Schulz
(1892-1942). This forms
the last of his
collection The Street of
Crocodiles, published in
1934. Schulz was shot by
a Nazi officer in
1942.Both the title of
Hersch’s work, and the
‘motto’ found on the
composer’s manuscript
(‘Thus far and no
further. But what has
become of the end of the
world…’) are to be
found in The Comet.
It’s interesting that
in in the snowy margins,
unlike his earlier
Fourteen Pieces which
were inspired by the
poetry of Primo Levi,
Hersch chose to not title
each individual movement
with a quote. However his
choices of text are
applied, there is a clear
quality of distillation.
In every case, the texts
which the composer has
chosen to eschew lie
beneath the music, akin
to the greater mass of an
iceberg, submerged, but
imminent.Hersch also has
very particular taste in
visual art, and there
seems to be common ground
between the intensely
expressionist drawing of
Schulz, and those of
Michael Mazur, which
inspired his string
quartet Images from a
Closed Ward. The
parallels between these
artists reflect common
traits shared between
these two pieces, which
provide a window on how
the music should be
approached, expressively
and technically. I would
argue, that from a
violinist’s point of
view, this pertains
directly to how bow and
left hand should approach
the string: the febrile
vibrancy of both Mazur
and Schulz’s pencil and
charcoal strokes, perhaps
what T.S. Eliot called
the ‘circulation of the
lymph’, in every
gesture, speaks to the
intense experience,
physically and
emotionally, of playing
(and hearing) this music.
There is an intense sense
of ‘truth to
materials’ at every
moment, the sense that
every note sings on the
edge of, or even beyond,

Francesca
da Rimini is a drama
for music in two acts by
Saverio Mercadante,
libretto by Felice
Romani; the text is
freely inspired by the
unfortunate events of the
two lovers, Francesca and
Paolo, of which Dante's
Comedy (canto V)
also
narrates. According to
some scholars, the first
performance of
Francesca da
Rimini took place in
Madrid in January 1828;
however, this date is not
reflected in the Diario
de Avisos de Madrid, a
publication that daily
reserved a conspicuous
space for news on the
shows staged in the
Spanish city: the years
between 1828 and 1831 in
fact do not mention the
work. Furthermore, no
printed libretto of
Mercadante's Francesca
da Rimini is
preserved today –
an inexplicable fact, if
one admits that the
performance took place.
The text of the opera can
be largely traced back to
the one prepared by
Romani for the homonymous
work by Antonio Carlini
(Naples 1825), which
Mercadante was able to
know before his stay in
Spain. Following the
missed Spanish premiere,
the opera should then
have been represented at
La Scala Theater in a
subsequent season, with
reliability the imminent
one of the 1831/32
carnival; but shortly
thereafter the impresario
died: thus the
contractual obligations
involving him were no
longer fulfilled, and,
for a second time,
Mercadante was then
forced to shelve the
plans about Francesca
da Rimini, put aside
now for several months.
In fact, the scoring
– very similar to
that of the operas
planned at La Scala in
the same Carnival period
– assumes that
Francesca da
Rimini was destined
for a theatre of great
means, like few others in
Italy besides La Scala.
But the failure of the
opera may also have been
due to the presence of
the part of an amoroso
en travesti,
Paolo, to whom Mercadante
assigns a prominent role
also in terms of music:
in 1831 and in Italy such
a solution was no longer
so frequent as a few
years before or in
provincial theatres, and
so this condition may
possibly have affected
the fate of the
negotiations in Milan,
and may explain how the
composer was then unable
to have the score
performed
elsewhere. This
