Fascinated by the beauty of Chicago, Franco Cesarini has translated his emotions into music: this is how Symphony No. 3 “Urban Landscapes” Op. 55, was born, a musical portrait of this metropolis overlooking Lake Michigan. The composition is divided into three movements: The Wrigley Building from Dawn to Noon, Blue Silhouette and Cloud Gates, which by sharing the same thematic material arranged in cyclical form, strengthen the overall cohesion of the piece. The first movement, preceded by a short slow introduction in which the main theme is presented in an almost dreamlike form, metaphorically represents the city at dawn. The sudden change of time symbolizes the start of activities with all its noises and sounds: you can hear the bell that announces the closing of the subway doors, the sound of cars speeding by, the siren of a patrol car. If the first movement represents the day, the second introduces a nocturnal environment: a melancholic melody played by the English horn anticipates a more animated tempo depicting melodies coming from jazz clubs. Powerful fanfares that take up the second theme of the first movement introduce the third movement. In this finale, the role of the two themes is reversed compared to the first movement and one takes the place of the other in a kind of games of mirrors. Les transcriptions pour orgue proposées ici ne sont pas fortuites, Du Mont lui-même en est l’instigateur, par le simple fait qu’il mentionne sans équivoque, dans la préface de ses Meslanges imprimés en 1657 : « (...) On trouvera outre lesdites pièces, plusieurs Preludes en façon d’Allemandes à deux parties, pour la Basse et le Dessus de Violle, lesquelles se pourront se jouer seules ou avec la Basse-continue si l’on veut (...). Ces Preludes serviront aussi pour les Dames Religieuses qui touchent l’Orgue en façon de Duo : j’ay marqué ceux qui sont propres pour l’Orgue, ils n’auront qu’à les transcrire pour les jouer avec plus de facilité. » Mais, il était tentant de ne pas se cantonner à cette indication, et ce recueil propose l’intégralité des 20 Preludes. En 1661, Du Mont fait paraître un livret contenant une « Troisième partie ajoutées aux Preludes des Meslanges, pour un Dessus ou une Taille de Viole ». Il précise : « pour faire plus grande harmonie ». Ces préludes, en trios, ont été transcrits ici sous cette forme. Dans le recueil des Cantica sacra paru en 1652, on trouve cinq pièces instrumentales indépendantes, Ces pièces, notées pour trois ou quatre violes et basse continue, ouvrent cet ouvrage. Olivier Miquel ? Henri Du Mont : né en 1610 dans le diocèse de Liège, Henry Du Mont étudie la musique à Maastricht, où il devient organiste à l’âge de 19 ans. Les troubles politiques de cette région convainquent certainement Du Mont de tenter sa chance à Paris. Il y arrive dès 1638, sous le règne de Louis XIII, et on le retrouve, en 1643, titulaire de l’orgue de l’église Saint-Paul dans le Marais (église détruite à la Révolution), poste qu’il honorera jusqu’à sa mort en 1684./ Recueil / Orgue
